The SL, well known for being one of the best grand tourers ever made - the R230 holds true to its predecessors with sleek styling and effortless performance.

This is the fifth generation SL which was in production from 2001 to 2008. The R230 features a retractable hardtop Verio roof and is equipped with a 3.5-litre V6, producing 245 bhp.

Mercedes fitted the car with ABC (Active Body Control) which offers the perfect blend of comfort and handling.

Maximum performance is offered in the form of a Mercedes 7G-Tronic seven-speed auto gearbox with updated clutch technology for improved response. Lots of performance-focused engineering went into developing car while maintaining comfort, as you'd expect.

We get many R230s submitted to us for consideration, however, we only take on the best of the best. This is one of those cars with just 50k miles. It's difficult to believe the amount of car you get for your money.

Hands down the best car I've ever owned - awesome machine.

Andrew has been the proud owner of this R230 for the past year and has really enjoyed every second of ownership. He has kept in excellent condition over his time with the car, having the automatic gearbox fully rebuilt last December.

Andrew looked at many R230s before deciding to this was the one, and mainly used it as a weekend toy. Of course considering recent events, Andrew has not been able to use the car as much as he planed, and has now decided it is time for someone else to enjoy the car.

Exterior

Sleek and sensual body lines replace the classic '90s boxy shape in this refined fifth generation.

Wheels and Tyres

This sporty hard top convertible is fitted with dashing 19” AMG 5-spoke alloys which complement the cars sleek body lines and each is wrapped in Bridgestone Potenzas.

The alloys look good on this example - the centre covers would benefit with a light refurb. The tyres also look great on this example with lots of tread left for the new owner. We did notice a slight tap to the front tyre wall on the O/S front wheel.

Bodywork

The fifth-generation saw a more sleek, curvy take of the classic boxy SL look, without losing any class and maintaining the classic grille.

We're really impressed by the presentation of this bodywork, with no issues to report. All the shut lines look tight and even between each panel.

Paint

Finished in a deep black the paintwork on this car looks very good. The lustre and depth of the paint are exactly what you would expect from a modern classic with its low mileage.

Of course, we did notice a few minor stone chips on the front bumper and also a very small patch of paint bubbling under the rear brake light.

Glass and Trim

Each glass panel on this car looks in excellent condition with no chips or crack repairs observed. The trim also looks great and nicely in line with its mileage and age.

The light covers are unfogged and free from any major scratches.

INTERIOR VIDEO

Interior

Softer leather with a whole host of creature comforts. Navigation, climate control and multi-adjustable electric seats are fitted for the Mercedes quality feel.

Seats and Carpets

Light leather fills the interior, which pairs nicely with the black exterior. Both seats look excellent and exactly what you would expect from a well cared for example. The carpets also look good, and the cabin is filled with useful push-opening pockets.

Dashboard

The dashboard on this SL350 example looks great with no issues to report. An interestingly shaped dashboard with multiple electrical computers to give you all the information you'd ever need. All the dials, bezels and controls are in good condition and Andrew reports everything is fully functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The automatic 7G-Tronic will look after you and give you plenty of thrills.

Both the steering wheel and gear knob reflect the mileage and care of ownership. Very little wear was found on this lovely example.

Mechanics

Performance and economy - the best of both worlds with the roaring 3.5L V6.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a 3.5-litre V6, producing 245 bhp which for maximum performance is coupled with a Mercedes 7G-Tronic seven-speed auto gearbox and updated clutch technology for improved response time.

Suspension and Brakes

Andrew reports no issues with the brakes or suspension.

As mentioned, the car is fitted with ABC (Active Body Control) which offers the balance of comfort and handling, this complex system uses accumulators and hydraulic fluids to regulate the firmness and heights of the suspension.

The Drive

You can have a sense of relief when you buy a Mercedes, knowing that every component has probably been over-engineered and built to last.

The 3.5L offers the perfect balance of performance and economy.

Andrew reports an excellent drive, one you’ll need to experience to fully appreciate.

Electrics and Other

As you would expect from a Mercedes of this calibre, the SL350 is equipped with a host of electrical features, navigation, climate control and multi-adjustable electric seats.

History and Paperwork

Rest assured as this sporty grand tourer comes with an impressively stamped service book and all the history.

Pleas review the service book to see both main dealer Mercedes and specialist garages up until 2019. As you can see from the paperwork the car had its automatic gearbox rebuilt in December 2020, and a new transmission control module was also fitted.

Why was gearbox rebuild necessary at only 50 K?Does the car have full MB service history. Who rebuilt the gearbox ?

I don’t know why but It kept slipping in second gear so I had it rebuilt by a local specialist, runs perfect now and still under guarantee for 12 months
