Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Professional Consigner

The CL500 is an appealing choice for those wishing to make a bold statement without being too flash.

Upon its launch the third generation CL coupe became Mercedes Benz's halo model, a svelte grand coupe loaded up with the state of the art equipment in a typically well-finished package. The car excels in its long-distance ability to cruise in near-silence, with a spacious well throughout cabin offering the ultimate technology of the era. Sitting alongside the S-Class saloons, the CL models were the most expensive new Mercedes' money could buy, and looking at the finish, presentation and quality of materials, there was no mistaking that fact. The styling has aged gracefully and has just the right amount of presence and impact.

By offering the public, for the first time, an alternative to Aston Martin and Bentley cars, the CL soon made a mark for itself as a low-key statement of wealth with a huge amount of ability. The Mercedes CL also has a little element of exclusivity due to its relative rarity - a car to appeal to those with an appreciation of quality and confidence, rather than flash and brash.

Paul's CL500 car is exactly the right car that fits into the right criteria when looking for comfort, safety, quality and a charismatic V8 engine. The car retailed at £80K when new and compared to its competitors, represents an absolute bargain today. Furthermore, this car is exactly what buyers would look for, i.e. in exceptional condition, with super-low miles, the right colour and a documented history.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren Rungasamy after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned Porsches and BMWs but nothing comes close to the all-round ability of the CL500 - I've just loved owning this car.

A man of taste, Paul has owned several high profile classic cars in the past, having the opportunity to try out many of the world's most prestige brands. He rates the Mercedes as one of the best, combining the sheer power, subtlety and dependability with astonishing dynamics.

As the current custodian of this car, Paul has ensured that he has maintained the car's excellent history, which includes servicing from his local Mercedes garage.

Sadly due to health reasons, Paul needs to find the car a new owner.

Exterior

The condition of the CL corresponds with the low mileage and careful ownership profile.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has three Continental tyres in good condition having been on the car since 2016, but the front nearside Goodyear tyre would benefit from a replacement, as it has been flagged up as an advisory on the MOT.

The alloys are in very good condition, with just minor signs of slight kerbing.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in really excellent condition, with no evidence of damage visible.

The panel gaps and panel flow is as good as a factory fresh car, no signs of major grounding underneath and no careless dings or dents from what we can see.

Paint

The paint finish is excellent throughout, the lustre and finish are better than you would expect for a car of this age and demonstrates its cherished ownership.

There are very minor signs of overspray on the nearside headlamp unit rubber, suggesting a past bumper repair, but the fit and finishing has been carried out to a good standard.

Glass and Trim

The overall glass presentation is very good, with typical age-related wear. There are small marks on the edge of the passenger door glass. All rubber trim and body embellishments are in very good condition, with no evidence of damage.

Interior

Hugely inviting and spacious, the interior is not only well made but exudes an air of calm.

Seats and Carpets

The sumptuous interior is in very good condition, with the seats in well-kept order. As you would expect, the driver's seat has minor signs of wear - the rear seats and passenger seats are in perfect condition with both front seats offering fully functioning electric controls.

The carpets, both in the interior and the boot are in lightly used condition and has benefited from regular cleaning and care. The mats are in very good condition too.

Dashboard

The dashboard presentation and function are in excellent condition, all switches and functions are operational. The veneer wood finish is wearing well, with no unsightly marks or wear. All console and fittings are functional are in good condition. The Night View Assist is said to be fully operational.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear change controls are in very good condition and the electronic handbrake is fully operational.

Mechanics

The 5.5-litre engine is ultra-smooth and refined, with plenty of low-down power for overtaking.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 engine fired up instantly during the 3-degree cold-morning start, with no unwanted knocks or vibrations. The engine rose to temperature with no issue.

The engine is delightfully smooth, with the silence broken up with the irresistible urge to blip the V8.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension and brakes are in excellent order, with no untoward issues or noises evident. The discs have minimal scoring and have plenty of life left.

The Drive

The CL500 has a healthy 383bhp and gets you to 60mph in less than 5 seconds, yet its more than the sum of its generous powerplant. The interior with its digital speedo, onboard computer with infrared cameras, lighting modes, lane assists and Harman Kardon surround sound stereo better indicates its true purpose. It makes you feel special, and the experience and finesse of owning a CL has to be experienced. The suspension is set up for comfort and ride, but it's handy to know that there is a huge amount of power to be unleashed if needed.

Electrics and Other

The car is heavily laden with technology, and Paul informs us that everything in the car is fully functional, including the plethora of driving aids orientated at the running gear and power delivery.

History and Paperwork

This CL comes with comprehensive Mercedes service history - you won't find a better example.

The car comes with a complete documented history, with each service meticulously carried out by all owners at their respective Mercedes Benz garage.

Originally registered with Mercedes Beaconsfield, it lived in Poole for a year in 2016 before being bought by Paul, its current owner in 2017, who has added around 3,000 miles to its mileage but has ensured it's been serviced each year that he's had it.

The car also comes with its original exhaust, the previous owner chose to install an aftermarket item but retained the original unit, which comes with the car.

Paul informs us that he thinks a previous owner changed the badge from CL500 to CL63 - a new owner may decide to change back to the original. Also, Paul isn't sure if the AMG badge is original to the car - he thinks it may have the 'AMG package' but not sure. If this is important to you then perhaps you may know by other details on the car and/or a call to Mercedes.

We have visited the vehicle and also actioned checks on the follow; seller ID, V5, HPi.

Can you give details of any remedial paint work done please. What was done to the front bumper which has had a respray?

Adam - Trade Classics

Hey Sukhdev – I’ve just spoken Paul on the phone. He said he took the car for an MOT a couple of years ago and one of the garage people accidentally hit the bumper when parking. It wasn’t bad but it was fixed professionally by Mercedes. Hope that helps. Adam

Hey Hakan 🙂 We’ve published all the info we have on the car. If you can’t see what you’re after then you may have to do your own research based on the chassis number perhaps. cheers Adam

Hi Paul, any issues with the ABC pump that pressurises the complex suspension layout, or signs of leakage from the dampers? A common fault on CL’s.
Would of thought if there was any problem, it would have been spotted by MB Dealership, as they would be more than happy to relieve you of £3k plus to fix.

Hi Martin – I’m just replying on Paul’s behalf as he’s not very well at the moment. I had a chat to him and he’s not aware of any issue or any leak. The Mercedes garage did the service in Feb and MOT in July and I would have thought, like you, that they would have mentioned a leaky damper at both checks. Of course that was 6 months ago now but does seem the chances of any fault with that is low to me. Hope that helps a little.

Hi Adam sorry to hear that Paul is not feeling too good. The blue dipstick on Pic 8/32 is that for the engine or transmission oil? I know the later engines had no dipstick or sump plugs, with engine oil levels determined on the dash display. Regards

Thanks for your concern Marin. I’m really no expert on these car but from a bit of Googling I think it’s likely to be oil. Also being at the font is a likely clue. Perhaps someone viewing this listing can confirm?

Hi. Is this car an AMG ?

Adam - Trade Classics
Admin

Hi Rich – apologies for the slight delay in getting back to you. Paul isn’t very well at the moment and I’ve just spoken to him on the phone. It’s easier for him if I reply on his behalf.

So Paul thinks it has the ‘AMG package’ but he’s not 100% sure. Of course there are things like AMG wheels fitted.

I’m not an expert in these cars too but if you’re seriously interested then perhaps a call to Mercedes could help you – the VIN is published here (WDD2163712A015488).
