Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Approximately ~4,450 MGC Roadsters were produced and they were capable of hitting ~120mph - impressive back in the '60s.

The MGC was touted as BMC's replacement for the Austin-Healey 3000, with a big 2.9L six-cylinder engine up front in the ever-popular MGB setup. The power and torque figures were more than adequate for the roadster's potential upmarket ambitions.

Thirty-one years ago, our vendor, Barry, spotted this stunningly restored MGC on display at a classic car show, and the rest, as they say, is history.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Barry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

At the time I couldn’t really afford the car, but I made a deposit and three payments over three months until it was paid for.

When you want something, you have to go above and beyond to achieve it. That was what Barry thought when he decided he would love to own the freshly restored MGC.

That was 31 years ago, and in that time, an astonishingly low ~5,741 miles have been covered.

Barry enjoyed taking the MGC to MG rallies, where it got plenty of attention.

Sadly, due to lack of use, Barry has decided to sell his MGC with us, he will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in the classic British Racing Green, the bulged bonnet hints that this is something more than a standard MG Roadster.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are in good condition, with some slight tarnishing between the spokes, but nothing excessive.

The tyres are matching brands and have plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork was given a full and extensive restoration ~31 years ago, where nothing was left untouched, as you can see in the restoration photographs.

Looking around the MGC, the bodywork is in excellent condition. The panels align very well with equal gaps, and there are no noticeable dings or dents to point out.

Please take time to view the underside photos to see the quality of this example - it certainly looks a cut above most you'll see available for sale.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the car's condition for yourself.

Paint

Finished in what’s thought to be British Racing Green, the paintwork is excellent, with very few blemishes to point out.

The images have been taken from various angles to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So, please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion of the paint's condition.

Glass and Trim

All windows appear in good condition, with no noticeable scratches.

The vinyl roof is in good condition and fits very well.

All of the chromework on the MG is in great condition, with a bright finish.

The lights are also in good order, with no chips or splits to the lenses on the front or rear.

Interior

Inside the cabin, the black leather seats are comfortable, making for an enjoyable driving experience.

Seats and Carpets

The retrimmed black leather seats are in very good condition, with no damage to point out. Both door cards are in good condition too.

The carpets have been replaced and are therefore excellent; a set of rubber MG mats has been fitted to help protect the carpet.

Inside, the boot is clean and tidy. There is a spare wheel present, along with a jack and a wooden template to remove the knock-offs.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The black vinyl dashboard is free from any splits or cracks. The Smiths instruments are working correctly, and the mileage is reading approximately ~5,741 miles after the odometer was reset to 00,000 at the time of the restoration.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original black leather steering wheel, this is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear. The original gear knob shows 1-4 and R, with overdrive activated via the dash-mounted switch.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A 3.0-litre straight-six fills the engine bay nicely.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.0-litre straight-six was rebuilt during the restoration and had an upgraded cylinder head fitted to accept unleaded petrol. The MG fires up and sounds fantastic. It runs with no issues reported. Barry told us he normally does a reverse flush of the cooling system after each 2,000 miles, something his dad used to do, it is due at 6,000 miles. He said it has a tendency to be difficult to restart while hot if this process is ignored.

A four-speed gearbox is fitted with overdrive that is operated via the dash-mounted switch - the change is smooth, and there are no untoward noises from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

Out on the road, the ride is firm without being crashy; you know you are in a two-seater sports car, and it’s great fun around the twisty B-roads. No knocks or bangs are coming from either corner, and the ride is smooth.

The car comes to a stop as it should, in a straight line, and with no issues reported.

The Drive

Even though Barry hasn’t covered many miles, in his early ownership, he would often be seen at a local MG rally for a run out.

The car never fails to turn heads and is great fun to drive.

Our outing for the Mechanical Review video was, in fact, the furthest the car had been since pre-Covid.

Electrics and Other

Being from 1969, the car is quite minimal on the electrical side of things. However, all of the switchgear appears original and is reported to work as it should by the owner.

There is an alarm fitted, which does arm/disarm.

History and Paperwork

Restoration photographs are a key part of the MGC’s history, bringing it to the superb condition you see here.

There isn’t an enormous amount of paperwork with the MG, as the restoration was carried out by the previous keeper. Importantly, there are photographs taken during the work. Also of relevance is the collection of valuation certificates from the Cherished Car Underwriting Agency, which show the mileage from each year. These match up with the previous MOT certificates, which help confirm that just ~5,741 miles have been covered in ~31 years.

Even though the restoration was carried out ~31 years ago, such little mileage has been covered; the car still looks exceptionally fresh, thanks to Barry keeping the car covered and never intentionally taking it out in the rain.

A remarkable MGC that is ready to jump in and enjoy.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information provided by the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

Hi Barry, no I haven’t received anything. Where did you send it?

Hi Barry, I am not sure what exactly a reverse flush of the coolant system entails and what do you think is happening that improves starting when hot?
Many thanks
Richard
