The MGB offers a classic sporting character with everyday usability.

As familiar as a cup of tea or mowing the lawn, the MGB is very much part of the British landscape, but this common appeal shouldn’t put people off the charms of one of the best loved open-topped sports cars in the UK. Aside from being a stylish design and exciting drive, the familiar mechanics, exemplary parts availability and usability of the MGB have made it a classic car icon accessible to everyone. The design originates from 1962 and around half a million found homes over its 18-year reign. Even when BL decided to axe the car, it remained an engaging experience and never properly replaced. Earlier chrome bumpers models, with the lower suspension and a tasteful interior, are the ones to go for. This 1972 MK2 Roadster, hits the sweet spot with its overdrive transmission, high-seat headrests and crackle-paint facia.

Finished in red with a black interior, this car comes with its original service "passport book" and a documented bare metal respray in 2003, with invoices documenting over £10K’s worth of maintenance and upkeep since then. It was last serviced around ~1,400 miles ago and has lived a charmed life. It is MOT and Road-tax exempt and comes with two sets of keys.

Meet the owner

The MGB provides a great driving experience, as classic as they come.

David has been a long-time fan of the MGB, having owned several back when they were current. Looking specifically for a solid roadster, he came across this well-restored example in 2011 and hasn’t added much more than 2,000 miles to it, while ensuring it drives as best as it possibly can.

Used as an occasional car, the recent lack of use is his main reason for selling the car. He will be happy to answer questions about the car in the comments section below.

Well presented and solid, it has been well cared for since its restoration.

Wheels and Tyres

This MG is fitted with Rostyle steel wheels, they’re all in good condition with mild signs of age as pictured.

The car has a Marshal and three Firestone tyres. They are over 15 years old but all are in good shape with decent tread remaining.


Both passenger doors open and close without effort and no suggestions of sagging. The panel's shut lines are good, with a flush fit. Under-paint blemishes are merging on the tops of the front wing where they meet the scuttle panel. Some other imperfections were noted on the nose of the front wings. Otherwise, the car does present well and is free of dents or blemishes on the rest of the panels.

The floor pan is solid with light surface corrosion noted in places, mostly confined to the sills/outer edges where it meets the bodywork. The wheel wells are good and like the floor have been treated with inhibitor. The lowest section of the rear valance shows corrosion around the exhaust aperture. The engine bay and boot floor are in good shape.

The red paint finish has been well applied, it received a bare metal respray around ~20 years ago. The paint has lasted well, retaining a healthy lustre and nothing more than a few minor paint reactions under the headlamps and light wear on the lower front valance. The paint is consistent in hue and is free of significant road wear, with no evidence of outdoor element build-up.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all decent, with no issues in terms of the rubber seals. The lights and lenses are free of damage too.

The hood is in good shape, it lowers and raises without any issues and provides a good tight fit. There is also a tonneau cover, which has a few tape repairs but is otherwise perfectly useable. The chrome trim is in good shape and well-mounted to the body.


The interior is in excellent shape, especially the seats, a classic red over black car.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are decent, with just mild wear on the red piping on the driver seat.

The cabin carpets are in good shape showing no signs of dampness.


The dashboard and centre console presentation is positive, with nothing of note to mark it down.

The facia padding and crackle-paint finish look good with decent gauges and switches. All are said to function as they should. The door cards are tidy as pictured.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel appears to be its original item and shows mild wear/fading to the colour in line with a car of this age.

The gear lever is in good condition with an intact gaiter.


The sturdy B-Series engine has been well maintained over the years, with plenty of attention to the brakes and suspension too.

Engine and Gearbox

The car started up with no hesitation, firing up with an even idle, with no splutters or unwanted noises. As the engine warmed up there was no unwanted exhaust smoke. On tick-over the engine is rattle-free and there were no observations of any fluid leaks.

The car has an Osseli Tuned engine tag plate suggesting that it has seen some form of attention by them to the engine. The plate reads 1950cc which may allude to its engine capacity but David can’t confirm this. There is also an invoice from Oselli but as it is related to a different registration we can’t be sure of its relevance. The engine shows evidence of regular maintenance.

The gear change was demonstrated to operate well, shifting up and down smoothly and no reported issues with the clutch. The car is fitted with overdrive, which wasn’t tested but David assures us it works perfectly.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components show mild signs of age, but the car drives and handles without any problems noted.

The car brakes well with no vibrations or pulling to the side, confirmed by new parts in recent years.

The Drive

The MGB has a reputation for good stability and road holding, with these traits still standing out in this well-maintained example. The engine pulls strongly and that B-Series tone fed through twin SU’s and low-down seating highlights the car's eternal appeal. It rides well for what is a 1960s design, with decent absorption and no knocks or thuds from the wheels.

This MG also corners well, with the steering appearing to be smooth and accurate as we increased speed. David has not reported any issues in terms of the car's oil pressure and the engine temperature, despite the hot day, remained constant.

Electrics and Other

The car has been fitted with a JVC CD/FM player, with rear-mounted speakers.

History and Paperwork

Since its bare metal spray in 2003, over ~£10,000 has been spent on maintenance and renovation.

First registered by Lookers of Swinton, Manchester in January 1972, the car retains its original issue service book, with service stamps up to 1974. It recieved a bare metal respray in 2003, followed by an extensive array of MOT certificates, invoices for parts and maintenance from the same garage since then.

Before David obtained the car in 2011, it was owned by a lady owner who spent over £7,500 on getting the car up to scratch after its body restoration. This included an further partial restoration in 2009, heater box rebuild and work to the suspension and brakes. David has spent an additional £2,800 on the car which includes a suspension and brake strip down, minor welding, servicing and maintenance.

The car was last serviced around ~1,400 miles ago and is Road Tax and MOT exempt. It comes with two sets of keys and has been stored in a garage since 2011.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.
