Introduction

Josh Sharples
Professional Consigner and Photographer

An increasingly rare find, this low mileage hot hatch will turn heads on every drive.

In 1983, British Leyland launched the MG Maestro, a car that could bring mixed memories back, in an attempt to put British hot hatches on the map. However, it didn’t live up to expectations with the main problem being the original 1.6 engine performing rather disappointingly.

However, 18 months later in 1984, they unveiled the 2.0 fuel-injected EFi model, which finally allowed the Maestro to compete against the iconic Volkswagen Golf GTI. Coupled with a Honda gearbox, the updated model drove much better, with the 115bhp engine performing well in all driving conditions and the handling led to a fun experience behind the wheel.

This particular Maestro has been loved by one previous owners for most of it's life, collecting only ~36,400 miles along the way.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the way the car drives - it gets a lot of attention on the road and I will be sad to see it leave.

Brian purchased the Maestro in 2020 via the most loved online auction service (that's us!) from the previous owner who had owned the car from new, with the mileage and condition making it that little bit more enticing.

Brian tells us he has enjoyed every minute behind the wheel, and loves how smoothly it drives as well as attention that the car brings. Brian concludes “I love the unmistakeable '80s styling on the car, with the red details inside making it feel extra special”.

After two years of ownership, Brian has decided to free up space in his garage for a new beauty, to go alongside his 1987 Fiesta 1.4S and Fiesta XR2 MK1.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Finished in its original Targa Red, this Maestro remains in great condition.

Wheels and Tyres

The ‘cheese-grater’ wheels, as known by aficionados, appear in good condition across the car, with only minor scuffs and age-related marks visible on some of the alloys.

The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining, however the different brands across the tyres indicates they are not all recent items.

Please have a browse through the media gallery to gain a better understanding of the condition.

Bodywork

Bodywork seems to be in great condition, with just minor signs of wear across the car.

As you'd expect, the external plastics have faded a little with age, but we couldn’t see any visible signs of rust on the bodywork during our visit.

We’ve highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourself.

Paint

Targa Red was the paint option that the original owner opted for, and this original paintwork remains in good condition across the car, with only a few age-related imperfections visible if you look carefully for them.

There is a minor paint chip under the driver’s side rear passenger door, aswell as a scratch on the rear passenger side door as seen in the media gallery.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, rear window, side windows and sunroof all appear clear and without damage. The adhesive for the rear view mirror became unstuck on our visit, however Brian assures us this shall be fixed in time for the purchase. There may be slight signs of ageing on the rubber around the glass, but similar to the paint you have to really look for it to notice.

Interior

Comfortable seats, red details, and a dashboard in great condition - the interior of this Maestro EFi is the place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The carpets appear to be in great condition, with minimal wear visible considering its 37 year lifetime. This is the same with the seats and door cards, which all remain in good condition, which is consistent to the low mileage driven in this car. The headlining is sagging in places and could do with some attention in the future.

Feel free to look through the gallery to see the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The interior condition remains consistent across the whole car, including the dashboard. An aftermarket thermometer and compass have been added to the car, but the original stereo fitted by the factory remains to be the entertainment system of choice.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel remains in good condition, with little evidence of wear visible. The gear stick is a little worn, with the red details having faded a little, but that is expected with the age.

Mechanics

Delivering 115bhp enabling a 0-60 in 8.4s, the ‘O’ series engine leaves you with smiles while behind the wheel.

Engine and Gearbox

As mentioned earlier, this Maestro has the 2.0L fuel-injected ‘O’ series engine, and as seen in the ‘Cold Start’ video, it starts well and doesn’t struggle when the revs are increased. The engine in general appeared in great condition, and we didn’t notice any smoke from the exhaust upon start up either.

This quality of the gearbox installed in the Maestro EFi was so good that it was used in almost all MGs between 1995 and 2005, and this particular example lives up to that high standard, transitioning between gears smoothly as seen in our ‘On The Road’ video.

Suspension and Brakes

The EFi model is equipped with improved vented brake discs in comparison to the infamous 1.6 model, and the Brian the owner assures us that they continue to perform well in all situations.

The rear brake drum appears to show some surface rust, so please take a look through the gallery to see this for yourself.

With the revised suspension coupled with a rear anti roll bar, the EFi has a comfortable ride as seen in our ’On The Road’ video.

The Drive

Please watch the ‘On The Road’ video to see the car being driven on the roads.

The car drives well, with smooth gear shifts and a comfortable ride despite the condition of some of Britain’s roads in recent times! One thing to note, you can hear a rattle in the video which we believe is from inside the car rather than the engine, but Brian will be happy to answer any questions regarding this topic.

Electrics and Other

Brian the owner assures us that the electrics system works as expected, and you can see during the ‘Cold Start’ video that the dashboard lights work. As mentioned, the car is equipped with the standard stereo from factory.

History and Paperwork

A well maintained two owner vehicle with all the relevant history and very low mileage - a must buy in our eyes.

With only ~36,400 miles and two loving owners (the log book says two previous owners as the first registrant was the garage - Priests of Chesham), this Maestro has been well looked after. It has been well maintained, with the notes in the repair manual correlating to the fact that the owners had a great knowledge in car mechanics and confident enough to uphold the car themselves.

The car’s MOT is valid until May 2023, with the only defects being the offside mirror being slightly damaged (as pictured in our exterior gallery) and one of the registration lights is inoperative. It has a 100% MOT pass rate, other than in 2008 when it failed only due to a defective tyre.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

Good Morning, great to see this MG back. As understood the car has not been resprayed, however there appears to be evidence of repair overspray on front mud flaps and the plastic wiper grills on the scuttle. DO you know the extent of the repairs. I assume for rust? Thanks Paul
