Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Iconic, charming, fun and such an enjoyable drive. The Mini Cooper is a car that holds a special place in many people's hearts.

The car that was built for the people, a car that is extremely versatile and practical for day-to-day motoring while being able to deliver in racing with its go-cart-like handling.

From launch, the Mini was a huge success, 5.4 million Minis were bought over the 41 years of production, and it still remains the best-selling British car of all time. Standing out from the crowd was never an issue with the choice between so many different models and editions produced across the years.

This Rover Mini Cooper (Mark VI) is a charming example of the iconic British classic, well cared-for over its years and presented in very smart condition. Powered by the 1,275cc fuel-injected A-Series engine which drives the front wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. It comes to market from ~2 year ownership, and was imported in to the UK from Japan in August 2020. The car has a fresh MOT valid until May 2024 and has had its engine oil, oil filter and battery changed as well as a new catalytic converter, back box and new rear brake shoes replaced within the last year.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Carl the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love everything about Mini, its just such a fun brand and I know that whichever model I drive it's going to be great!

Having been a real Mini fan for as long as he can remember, Carl, the current owner, was sold on this Cooper as soon as he set eyes on it "This particular mini felt unique and is also in such great condition in and in a mostly original state, comparison to others that were on the market". He's had this car for ~2 years and it's served him well, telling us "The car has been an all rounder for me. So much fun on short drives, nipping through town roads and traffic and feeling like a go kart at times, when cornering and on roundabouts. But has served me when on longer trips and been super reliable! We even took her from the Midlands to isle of white on the ferry, which was great fun".

With a new addition to the family, Carl needs to find something a bit more practical and easier for fitting a baby seat, and so the car comes to market with us. It's just had an MOT actioned, and as part of that work he had new tyres fitted all round, and a service with his local specialist "Mini Bitz". He'll be happy to answer any questions on the the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its fiery colour matching the spirited nature of this little classic, the Cooper just screams that ever iconic styling.

Wheels and Tyres

The Cooper 1275 is fitted with a set of 12" 4 spoke Mini Revolution wheels. These are in good condition with only a few minor marks, but could benefit from a good clean and polish up to bring back their former glory.

The 1275 is complete with a set of Nankang Green Sport tyres with a spec of 165/60 showing date codes of 2022. The front and rear tyres are matched with the same date codes and tread spec. The condition of tyres looks great overall with no obvious cracking or real signs of wear given that these are almost brand new. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Mini and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

This is a lovely example of a Mini Cooper, the shut lines and panel gaps look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors and both boot sections open and close well, exactly as you would expect from the quality on show here. Looking over the usual hot spots for corrosion on these cars, we didn't spot anything obvious to the front, sides or rear of the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Mini benefited from a respray when it arrived into the UK in its lovely coat of "Flame Red". The paint finish is good, even in colour and coat on each panel of the car. If we were being really picky, just a couple of things to note, a really small imperfection on the paint below the front nearside headlight, and the rear offside panel next to the boot showing a bit more orange peel to the finish.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

This car as pictured has been fitted with colour matched flared wheel arches that you'd normally see on a "Sportspack" Cooper. They show in good condition, if you were being really picky there are a couple of cracks near some screws where they might have been over tightened.

Windscreen section, side windows and mirrors all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the main glass sections. The chrome bumpers, grille, door, boot handles, and window surrounds all look in great condition too. The front Mini Cooper emblem looked great with a nice display to this, on the rear, the Mini emblem was a little pitted and the badge foggy.

The seals look good around the exterior and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. The nearside light to the rear, had started to come away slightly from the main body of the fitting which may be worth a look over by the future owner.

Interior

As charming as it is simple and classically elegant. The interior remains largely original but with the addition of new seats.

Seats and Carpets

The seats and carpets show really well in the cabin area having been upgraded and replaced in recent years. The seats themselves look like they've not had much use which brings a welcoming and comfortable setup to the interior. We noted no concerning issues with wear, tear or rips on these which is reflected in the rear seats also.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

Adding a touch of style, the dashboard is finished with a gloss wood finish, which is fully intact, although there are some chips and small marks in the lacquer.

With no signs of any major scuffs the drivers section shows nicely but we did note 2 cracks on top of the dashboard, we noted no warning lights displayed and the odometer showed a reading of ~70,668 KMs at the time of our visit.

A modern upgrade that works well on the Mini is the digital heads up display showing the Mini's performance in MPH in front of the drivers view as the dials still read in KPH due to it being an imported example.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke Mini steering wheel is in good condition, an after market replacement by Personal, with no major wear to the rim, the wood finish compliments the rest of the interior and keeps a classic feel in the cabin area.

The gear stick is in a respectable condition and doesn't look out of place in the interior. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

This Mini Cooper is a quick little runner, the 1275 packs a punch and this example has had regular maintenance over the past 2 years.

Engine and Gearbox

We noted no issues on the start up of the car with the engine and exhaust running smoothly when we visited. The car drives well with its smooth manual gearbox powering the front wheels without concern.

We took the car on a short drive and go into further detail about the Cooper, the car went through the gears without issue, watch the video to see the detail and the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, the current owner Carl took us around some local roads, we heard no knocks, bangs or unwanted noise from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Carl mentions the brakes and suspension provide an enjoyable journey with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem. Last year the car had some brake work and suspension work actioned by Carls local specialist "Mini Bitz".

The Drive

Mini's are famously fun to drive and a key part of their appeal. Direct and nimble, the Cooper offers great traction on corners and a lovely way of handling itself. Ultimately it's back-to-basics charm in the 1275, but that's one of the biggest reasons its so well loved.

Always a joy to drive, the Mini serves as a reminder of how far cars have come in recent years but also how much the older models deliver so much of that all important fun factor.

Electrics and Other

As a Japanese-market Mini, this Cooper features factory-fitted air conditioning, which had some remedial work last year, it does need re-gassed. The car also features a more modern touch with a digital heads up display showing the Mini's performance in MPH in front of the drivers view as the main dials still read in KPH.

The Mini is also complete with a Pioneer aftermarket stereo system and has 9" speakers in the rear parcel shelf area. A spare wheel is included in the boot section. Carl let us know that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

This car comes to market from ~2 years ownership, a Japanese import which came to the country in 2020, it presents in lovely condition with some choice upgrades.

Brought into the UK just under ~3 years ago from Japan, the car is believed to have been resprayed when it arrived in the UK with the last ~3 years. The Mini has had a few changes to it having had its interior seats changed, and the fitment of body coloured "Sportspack" wheel arches. While the car’s life and service history in Japan is not complete with the car, we have added the invoices it has accrued since being shipped to the UK and in the current ownership.

The Mini has had servicing from a local specialist "Mini Bitz" which included, new engine oil, filter and a new battery fitted in April 2023 at a cost of over ~£280. In June 2022, new rear brake shoes, coolant leak repair, adjustable front the bars, front wheel alignment, new catalytic converter and back box and air con repair was carried out, costing over ~£650.

Should there be any questions required, Carl would be happy to answer these in the section below.
