Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The Evo V is a road-going version of the hugely successful rally car with blistering performance and fantastic handling.

Launched in 1992, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was a homologation special producing ~244BHP from the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine whilst using the four-wheel drive system from the Galant GR-4. Mitsubishi soon upgraded the Lancer Evolution to the Evo 2 and, soon after, the Evo 3, all of which were well-balanced cars with excellent handling characteristics. However, when the Evo 4 was launched, Mitsibushi had a complete rethink with the design and needed something to catch the Impreza from Subaru. So they gave the new model a bigger turbo, improved aerodynamics, and the game changer is the active yaw control. This was when things took a turn for the Lancer Evolution, and popularity grew as the car won rally championships worldwide. The Evo 5 (V) was improved again with new and more aggressive looks, different bonnet, bumpers and side skirts, a wider track, and a stronger engine with more torque, yet the bhp was said to be the same by a gentleman’s agreement.

What a rare opportunity to become the proud owner of one of the most famous rally cars from the 90s and 00s. This car is an exceptional, low mileage and pristine condition example, as you will see and hear as you read on. It comes to market from ~2 year ownership with an enthusiast who owned one from new in the past, this a Japanese car that was imported in 2021.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Shaun the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Evo V is an itch that needed scratching again, and it took me eight months of hard searching to find a suitable one.

Shaun has owned several, shall we say, special cars over the years, and owned an Evo V from nearly new back in 1999. With that set in his mind, the search began, and as it turns out, gone are the days of finding an Evo for sale quite easily, especially if you are looking for an unmodified one such as Shaun was.

Eight months later and the holy grail turned up for sale, a freshly imported Evo V with one previous owner and Japanese service history in an unmodified state. Rare, to say the least, hence why Shaun didn't hang about and purchased it straight away. Although the car was in excellent condition, Shaun has taken it to the next level over the past 12 months with a complete underside restoration and basically replaced anything which wasn’t perfect.

Here comes the dilemma, having now owned the Evo and used it a handful of times on the road and spending a considerable amount of money getting it to such a high standard and clean condition Shaun doesn’t really want to see it losing its freshness, and so doesn’t really use it, hence the reason for the sale of his long sought-after Evolution V. Please feel free to ask Shaun any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

From any angle, the Evo V looks the part - rally-derived styling with flared arches, huge fog lights and an adjustable aluminium boot spoiler.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original O.Z Racing F1 wheels, these are in immaculate condition with no marks of note to mention. The tyres are matching Toyo Nano Energy 3 Plus and are in like new condition, having only covered limited miles.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

A Rally-inspired car from the 90s doesn't get much better than the Evo V. Shaun’s Evo is no exception; the body is excellent. All the panels align perfectly, and there are no dings or dents to see. It is pretty much as you would have seen it leave the factory in 1998.

Now to the underside, this is very special and finding a car in this condition from 1998 is pretty much unheard of unless it has had a complete restoration, which this Evo hasn’t. It has received some restoration work to ensure everything is as good as possible before being treated with a coating to futureproof it for many years to come. You will see from the images and video that this is pretty much as good as you would find on any new car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the fabulous "Satellite Silver", the Evo is in superb condition, and the paintwork is pretty much flawless for one of these cars. There are a couple of chips which have been touched up, but remember, the car isn’t thought to have been repainted other than the side skirts and bumper, which Shaun had done to get rid of some minor stone chips.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look in good condition, with no apparent scratches on the front, rear, or side windows. The window trims and seals are also in good condition, with no signs of age.

The headlights are in excellent condition with no chips, as are the indicators and rear lights. A very small chip in the driver's side fog light doesn’t look to have broken through the PIAA fog light glass.

Interior

Recaro’s, Momo steering wheel and white dials, it doesn’t get much more 90s rally than this - but what a fantastic place to be.

Seats and Carpets

What a great place to be, sitting in a Recaro seat with Alcantara bolsters, which are in amazing condition and show minimal signs of wear. A small amount has frayed on the driver’s side shoulder section of the checked material, possibly caused by the seatbelt, but this hasn't broken through the material.

The carpets are as you would expect for ~53,793 miles, pretty much like new and look to have always had a set of mats covering them. The fitted mats have a small amount of wear but nothing excessive. The boot area is nice and clean, with the space-saver spare wheel and jack present. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

There are no splits or cracks to the top of the dashboard and no noticeable scuffs to the lower section. The instruments have been professionally converted to red in MPH along with the odometer, which shows a reading of 53,793 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original MOMO steering wheel is in place and shows very few signs of wear. The leather gearknob shows 1-5 and R clearly, and the red stitching is in good condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

With a gentleman's agreement of ~276BH (allegedly) - the Evo V packs a punch from its turbocharged 2.0 litre.

Engine and Gearbox

As you can see, the engine bay is as close to clean as you could possibly get. Shaun has taken a great deal of time ensuring everything is spotless, even having the entire original exhaust refurbished, and then ceramic coated with the manifold in Volcanic black for longevity. Mechanically a full service has been carried out along with all fluids, spark plugs, filters, timing belt, pulleys and tensioners, coming in at £2,319.42.

The gearbox differentials and transfer box have all been serviced. There are no issues with the car changing gear, and it pulls like a train when going down the road. The handling is superb thanks to Mitsubishi’s innovative active yaw control system, which helps make the Lancer Evolution V so special. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has also been overhauled with the wishbones and other components treated to help futureproof them against any corrosion. Finally, it was finished with an entire geometry session to ensure everything is pointing the way it should be.

The big Brembo calipers have been entirely stripped, blasted and repainted in the correct colour with the right Brembo decal applied. The discs are also in excellent condition with no wear to them.

The Drive

On the road, the Evo is simply brilliant! There are no knocks or bangs from the suspension, which gives a firm but not harsh ride. Handling is fantastic, as you would expect from a rally-inspired car, and the performance is superb with a 0-60mph time of around ~4.7 seconds; the Evolution V doesn’t disappoint.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should. The switchgear is all superb, with no signs of wear. The radio has a band extender fitted to accept FM stations and works correctly.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

A well-documented service history from Japan - followed by extensive work in the UK, has made what is probably one of the best Evo V’s available in the county.

Quite often, cars imported from Japan lose their service history and documentation. However, not with this one, and it all appears to be there. Serviced at 13,568km in September 2000, 13,810km March 2001, 17,343km March 2003, 19,219km March 2005, 21,628km March 2007, 24,282km March 2009, 28,409km February 2011, 31,923km March 2013, 34,314km March 2015 46,281km March 2017, 67,350 February 2019 and finally converted to miles ~53,050 January 2021.

There are some detailed invoices showing every penny Shaun has spent on the Evo, totalling in excess of £6,000, but every penny has been worth it when you see the car's condition. We urge you to review the paperwork, as the invoices show everything in detail.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Evo’s were readily available, most of them coming into the UK as an import. But unfortunately, many have suffered from corrosion or have been heavily modified. So finding one in such magnificent condition is a really rare find, and any fan of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will know just how special this car is.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
