Introduction

Kevin Jacutan
Professional Consigner

Instantly recognisable, the Morgan 4/4’s lineage spreads over a staggering 83 years, and still has the same charm factor today as the very first model.

Originally released in 1936 the Morgan 4/4 has served as one of the worlds longest automotive production runs in history, with only a brief pause in manufacturing during the second world war, the Morgan 4/4 production finally ending in 2019. Having been through a number of revisions during that time this particular Morgan 4/4 is a 1600 model first registered in 1989. Being one of the later 1600 models it benefits from a number of manufacturing changes and upgrades such as; 1.6L Ford CVH engine, five speed gearbox, wider wings, better corrosion protection, and zinc plated passivated fittings and fixtures.

This Morgan is coming to market from ~1 year ownership, with 8 former keepers registered. It has a comprehensive history that details regular upkeep and maintenance of the mechanical aspects of this sporting roadster. Presented in a red over black colourway, it's a striking colour that gives this 4/4 that extra appeal.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kevin after meeting John and Gill the owners, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Because of its British heritage and provenance, our Morgan was intended to be a keeper, it does nothing but turn heads and elicit smiles wherever we are.

Gill and John were sold on this car due simply to the heritage, make, styling, and drive. In their ownership, they have made minor modifications to the vehicle which are as follows; Suspension bearings upgraded to roller bearings for improved steering, immobiliser fitted for security, Motolita wooden steering wheel fitted, matching wooden gear knob fitted (original to come with the vehicle), alloy radiator fitted, K&N air filter fitted, stainless steel bumpers.

Filling them with a sense of nostalgia due to its classic heritage and driving experience, the Morgan 4/4 was destined to be a keeper, however due to a turn of poor health for John they have been left with little choice but to sell their pride and joy. They will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The exterior styling of the Morgan 4/4 is timeless and immediately recognisable with its striking red paintwork and curvaceous body lines.

Wheels and Tyres

With its retro wire wheel design, finished in black and with chrome knock off spinners, these wheels give the Morgan a lot of character. On this example the wheels appear to be well cared for, with no sign of damage to any of the many spokes from our observation, and no signs of pitting on the chrome elements.

The wheels are fitted with Vredestein T-Rac 2 tyres and these appear to also be in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The Morgan's bodywork presents well, with no misaligned panels and no signs of corrosion that we could see. All panel gaps and shut lines appeared to be straight and line up as they should.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The striking red paintwork certainly catches the eye, and the colour looks consistent across the car. However this car is suffering from age related issues with the paintwork. Visible in particular on the bonnet and front wings, some cracks have started to appear in the paintwork, this could be due to many reasons such as age or heat build up, however the images we have taken are from multiple angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, so you can make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the vehicle is in good condition, with no cracks, splits, scratches, or chips. This includes the window in the convertible top. The trim pieces on the vehicle such as the bumpers are also in good condition, having been swapped out for stainless steel replacements.

Interior

The simple yet elegant interior of the Morgan 4/4 is a comfortable and nostalgic place to be, with wooden accents and leather upholstery, there isn’t much not to like.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are in good condition for their age, with some mild signs of wear but no visible rips or cracks in the hide. The colour is even across the leather and does not show any signs of fading or dye transfer.

A similar story can be told about the carpets, whilst showing moderate signs of wear for their age they are not ripped or torn so far as we could see, still visibly retaining their original Morgan branding.

Dashboard

The Morgan's dashboard consists of a simple yet attractive inlay of burl wood, with a tidy cluster of dials and gauges displaying all the information you need about the car. The dash is in good condition with no signs of delamination, common on this style of dashboard, and no damage to the clocks or gauges either.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The current owners, Gill and John, chose to replace the steering wheel with a Motolita wooden item, and a matching gear knob too. These items are both in excellent condition, and the Motolita steering wheel also features the Morgan text in the centre. The original gear knob is supplied with the vehicle.

Mechanics

Featuring the 1.6L Ford CVH engine, five speed manual transmission, and updated suspension bearings, this Morgan 4/4 provides a nostalgic driving experience with modern reliability too.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.6L CVH engine from Ford is a generally reliable unit, on the day of our visit we started the car from cold and it turned over with absolutely no hesitation whatsoever. Whilst out on the road the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault. This can be seen more clearly in our "On The Road" video.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is in good condition overall with the owners, Gill and John, opting to upgrade the suspension bearings to roller bearings for easier steering. Overall there is nothing untoward to report about the suspension, or brakes, with everything working as was expected during our visit. Looking through the paperwork you'll see regular upkeep of the car, including new kingpins in the not so distant past.

The Drive

Being the attention grabbing drive that it is, the driving experience of the Morgan 4/4 is spent crossing between showering in admiration from passersby, and enjoying the nostalgic experience of cruising down the road in a car that looks, feels, and drives like the classic British icon that it is.

If you watch our "On The Road" video, you can hear John talk briefly about the car, as well as experience a passenger's point of view during a quick drive out.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems on the Morgan 4/4 are limited, however what little electricals there are work just fine - including the immobiliser that has been fitted by Gill and John for added security. The water, fuel, oil, and battery gauges on the dashboard work perfectly, along with the speedometer and rev counter.

History and Paperwork

This Morgan features a comprehensive history, with regular servicing throughout its life, and paperwork to back it up.

From its first service on 31.08.1989 to its most recent service on 18.09.2018, the Morgan has been serviced at least once every two years with stamps to prove it. Alongside the service book there are multiple receipts for works carried out and services rendered in relation to the car. These are all available to view in our ‘History’ gallery below. The car had a cambelt and water pump change looking through the paperwork in 2018, and has done ~700 miles since then.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
