Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The +8 was pioneered in the late '60s and is credited for creating major brand appeal for Morgan.

The Plus 8 was produced by Morgan for 36 years between 1968 and 2004, and was reborn in 2012 to 2018. Among enthusiasts, the +8 is deeply associated with Peter Morgan, the owner-chairman behind its design. Installing a meaty V8 engine in the front of a traditional Morgan roadster was an ingenious idea that worked well for Morgan. They created Britain's fastest accelerating production car for a time and this creation proved so endearing it remained on sale with very little alterations for 36 years.

This example has one former owner who kept the car in Abu Dhabi for the majority of his ownership. Cliff, a professional engineer, purchased the car 9 years ago and has enjoyed using and tinkering on the car since. Just ~22,000 miles recorded, a classic design is given a somewhat striking character with the paintwork on this example.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Cliff the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned this lovely Morgan for 9 years and very much enjoyed driving it, along with some tinkering and fettling as needed.

Cliff purchased the car back in 2013 from a U.A.E bank manager who had the car exported to Abu Dhabi and then back to the UK. When he saw this vibrant +8 come to market, he jumped at the chance of owning it and has given it proper dry storage, along with upgrades and maintenance since.

Over his ownership, Cliff has converted the front suspension to Suplex, replaced the rear springs for Suplex progressive leaf springs, replaced all the shocks, front discs and pads, and fitted a new alternator. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

A timeless 60s body shell, finished in a vibrant orange with chrome accents.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 15" classic Morgan +8 alloys, the wheels appear in great condition and look like they just need a deep clean in some areas, the silver colour contrasts well against the orange paintwork and gives the car a sporty character.

The wheels are wrapped in a combination of Bridgestone/Turanza tyres and they appear to have a good amount of tread left.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks to be in great condition all around and seems to have no troublesome areas that we could notice. The panel fits looks to be good for a 90s classic roadster.

Please take a look at the exterior media to see just how good the bodywork is.

Paint

A vibrant orange will certainly turn heads wherever you go. The overall condition of the paint looks to be very good thanks to the car's low mileage and dry storage.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim which has been given the proper attention during Cliff's ownership looks very good alongside the paint.

The car appears to be fitted with its original brightwork, which looks in great condition across the car along with the rest of the trim. The front and rear bumpers have powder coated finish as per first owner's specification.

The condition of the glass appears to be in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Interior

Natural leather finish combined with a Walnut dash offers a touch of class and luxury within the cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The natural tan leather looks in great condition within this sporty + 8. There are some minor creases and minuscule marks to show that the car has been used and enjoyed.

The carpets and door cards are in great condition throughout and match the rest of the interior.

Dashboard

The Walnut dashboard appears in great condition and shows very little wear. Cliff reports that the instruments and controls are in good working order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and the gear knob appear in great condition and are wrapped in hardwearing black leather.

Take a look at the extensive photos and videos for a closer look at the cabin space of this +8.

Mechanics

The 3.9L V8 offers all the power you'd ever need in such an efficiently packaged roadster.

Engine and Gearbox

Morgan used a Rover V8 from a P5B Saloon to power the +8, and in 1983 fitted a Bosch L-Jetronic system which increased power to 204BHP. With the low weight, the car would be able to beat a 911 up to 90MPH. In 1990 Morgan increased the displacement of these engines from 3.5L to 3.9L.

The car started the first time during the cold start we captured, it then reversed out of the garage which can be seen in the mechanical video. Please take a look to also see the engine bay in more detail.

Suspension and Brakes

During Cliff's ownership, he refined the suspension set up by installing Suplex front suspension, replacing the rear springs for Suplex progressive leaf springs, and going even further by replacing all the shocks.

Additionally, Cliff's replaced the front pads and discs and reports suspension and brakes working faultlessly, mentioning a firm and sporty ride.

The Drive

A firmly sprung Morgan +8 ready to be enjoyed. With the roaring 3.9L V8 under the hood, this Morgan is not short on power or speed and gives the driver plenty of feedback while on the road.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with an assortment of neatly packaged switches and dials on the dashboard. All electrical items are said to be functional.

History and Paperwork

Colour aside, with one former owner, great history and low mileage, this Morgan +8 stands out from the rest.

The car comes with a good amount of MOT reports, receipts, and paperwork, dating back to the car's production, including the time the car was kept and stored in the U.A.E.

This is a driver-focused Morgan ready to be used and enjoyed, Cliff has mechanically and cosmetically maintained the car himself since 2013, and added some tasteful and a performance-focused suspension set up. He'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below. The private registration pictured is not included in the sale, the car has been moved back to its age related plate of K415 BWL.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi simple question—how big is the steering wheel ?
I see it’s a standard Morgan issue; is it 15 in.? As you have got older -as we all do -is this enough without power steering esp at low speeds I take it no smaller……

Are you allowed to tell me the reserve?

Many thanks Tim

Ps the car is a credit to you Cheers

Hi, The steering wheel is 15inch and I have never felt the need for power steering, the secret is to keep the kingpins well lubed
And no to second question.
