Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

Instantly recognisable, the Morgan 4/4’s lineage spreads over 83 years and still has the same charm factor to this day.

Originally released in 1936, the Morgan 4/4 has served as one of the worlds longest automotive production runs in history, with only a brief pause in manufacturing during the second world war. The Morgan 4/4 spans a whopping 83 years with production finally ending in 2019. Having been through a number of revisions during that time this particular Morgan 4/4 is a 1800 model first registered in 1995. Being one of the later 1600 models it benefits from a number of manufacturing changes and upgrades such as; 1.8L Ford Zetec R engine, five speed manual gearbox, wider wings, better corrosion protection, and zinc plated passivated fittings and fixtures. The iconic exterior styling of the Morgan 4/4 is instantly recognisable, the curvaceous front wings, the sloping rear arches, and the retro wire wheel design all come together to form the perfect representation of classic British motoring.

This particular example comes to market from the original owners, a full 27 years of ownership by current owner Peter, who has just driven a staggering ~4,700 miles since taking delivery of the vehicle in 1995. It's finished in British Racing Green over a magnolia leather interior with green piping, a veneer wood dashboard, and has recently had a health check and servicing actioned in preparation for sale.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having visited the Morgan factory I was absolutely blown away by the level of craftsmanship that goes into each and every car, the fact that each vehicle is hand made is what really sold it.

In 1989 Peter was looking to purchase a weekend car and was presented with the opportunity to visit the Morgan factory and have a look around, there he saw various cars in the process of production and was left gobsmacked after seeing how each car was built by hand and not on a production line like so many other cars. Between seeing the building process and the style and class the Morgan represented he simply had to have one and placed his order for the Morgan 4/4 in February of 1989 (Order No. 4058). Since taking delivery of the car in 1995 he has driven the car only in good weather, amassing a meagre ~4,700 miles since new. The car has spent its entire life garaged, and up until the day of our visit had never actually had the roof put on the vehicle as it was only ever driven on warm sunny days!

Prior to its auction Peter has had the car thoroughly inspected and prepared for auction by Walsh Vehicle Repairs of Yeadon, Leeds. A full list of all works carried out to prepare the vehicle for sale can be seen in our paperwork gallery. Sadly due to limited mobility Peter is no longer able to drive the vehicle and rather than have it gather dust in his garage he would much prefer someone to get the use out of it that it deserves. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The exterior styling of the Morgan 4/4 is timeless and immediately recognisable with its curvaceous lines.

Wheels and Tyres

With its retro wire-wheel design and finished in chrome, these wheels give the Morgan a lot of character. The wheels appear to be well cared for, with no sign of damage to any of the many spokes and no signs of pitting on the chrome centre caps.

The wheels are fitted with Avon tyres and these appear to also be in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The Morgan's bodywork presents well, with no misaligned panels and no signs of corrosion that we could see. All panel gaps and shut lines appeared to be straight and line up as they should. As to be expected from a car of this mileage and condition the bodywork is all original and has never had any work done to it, as confirmed by Peter.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The striking "British Racing Green" paintwork certainly catches the eye, with no visible defects present whatsoever we could see, the paintwork is in top notch condition. We could not seen any stone chips, scratches, or scuffs during our time with the vehicle and as to be expected of a car that has never been driven in the rain and been garaged its entire life there is no corrosion to be seen either.

The images we have taken are from multiple angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, so you can make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the vehicle is in good condition, with no cracks, splits, scratches, or chips. The trim pieces on the vehicle such as the bumpers are also in good condition and are the original items as with the rest of the vehicle.

As mentioned prior, Peter has to this day never used the hood! It had a good fit and presents in great condition having never seen use.

Interior

The simple yet elegant interior of the Morgan 4/4 is a comfortable and nostalgic place to be, with wooden accents and magnolia leather upholstery, there isn’t much not to like.

Seats and Carpets

The magnolia leather seats are in good condition for their age, with no major signs of wear or any rips and cracks in the hide. The colour is even across the leather and does not show any signs of fading or dye transfer.

A similar story can be told about the carpets, showing virtually no signs of wear, they are not ripped or torn so far as we could see and retain the original factory colour of matching green.

Dashboard

The Morgans dashboard consists of a simple yet attractive inlay of burl wood, with a tidy cluster of dials and gauges displaying all the information you need about the car. The dash is in good condition with no signs of de-lamination, common on this style of dashboard, and no damage to the clocks or gauges either, testament to ownership and storage.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both steering wheel and gear stick are the original items and are in good condition in line with the rest of the car, the leather steering wheel is without any visible damage or wear to the hide and the same is to be found of the gear stick with the original gear lettering showing no signs of wear either.

Mechanics

Featuring the 1.8L Ford Zetec R engine, five speed manual transmission, this Morgan 4/4 provides a truly nostalgic driving experience but with the benefit of modern reliability too.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.8L Zetec R engine from Ford is a reliable unit, on the day of our visit we started the car from cold and it turned over with absolutely no hesitation whatsoever and did not smoke at all when revved, this can be seen in our “On The Road’ video.

Peter has had the car thoroughly looked over in preparation for sale, some of the work included refreshing the coolant on the car and fitment of new spark plugs.

Suspension and Brakes

As with all things on this car, the suspension units have seen so little use that they are virtually brand new, however don’t take our word for it - as part of the vehicles pre-sale checkover the front steering and suspension equipment were professionally assessed, any maintenance work required, and deemed to be in good condition.

During the inspection the brakes were deemed to be under performing on the rear and had the shoes and cables adjusted accordingly to bring brake performance back to a satisfactory standard, meaning all brakes are now in fully working and serviceable condition.

The Drive

Being the attention grabbing drive that it is, the driving experience of the Morgan 4/4 is spent crossing between showering in admiration from passersby, and enjoying the nostalgic experience of cruising down the road in a car that looks, feels, and drives like the classic British icon that it is.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems on the Morgan 4/4 are limited, however what little electricals there are work just fine. All gauges on the dashboard work, along with the speedometer and rev counter too.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from the original owner, 27 years later this UK RHD 4/4 has covered just ~4,700 miles in that time, and has always been garaged as can be seen from the condition.

Since the day Peter submitted the order form he has kept hold of every bit of paperwork for the car, from tax discs and MOTs to servicing invoices and even insurance certificates (not included).

The most recent invoice, and perhaps the most important one, is for an extensive pre-sale check carried out by Walsh Vehicle Repairs of Yeadon where the vehicle was thoroughly inspected from top to bottom and had a plethora of works carried out to ensure it was in a fully serviceable condition for the auction. These works include the following; set tyre pressures to 1.5 bar, spare set to 2 bar; check front suspension and steering; remove and regrease track rod end ball joints; dismantle both rear axle hub assys/halfshafts and replace inner and outer oil seals; replace NSR wheel bearing; service rear brakes and adjust shoes/cables to suit; all new spark plugs; fluid check and top up; radiator drained and filled with fresh antifreeze. Coming to a total of £798.17, Peter wanted to ensure his pride and joy was ready for sale and the new owner.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
