Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Hot hatch styling, great handling, and cool appeal - it’s hard to resist the 205 GTi.

The Peugeot 205 is widely regarded as one of the best small cars of the 80s, earning its place as one of the world's most beloved classic hot hatches. It was even honored with CAR magazine's Car of The Decade award for the 1980s. This well-crafted and stylish car boasts curvaceous lines and balanced proportions. The 205 marked a departure from the conservative design approach of Peugeot's earlier small cars, embracing a bold new design that remained iconic until the introduction of the 206 in 1998.

The high-performance GTi variant was initially introduced in 1984 with a 1.6L engine, followed by the 1.9L GTi, equipped with an XU9JA engine delivering ~128 BHP. Notably, the 1.9L GTi's light weight, at just ~900 KG, enabled it to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in ~7.8 seconds and reach a top speed of ~127 MPH, right from the factory. The 1.9L version also came with half-leather seats, disc brakes on all corners, and 15" Speedline SL299 alloys. Even after production ceased in 1993, its popularity endured. It went through a phase as an affordable track toy but has recently experienced a resurgence as a highly sought-after classic hot hatch, particularly in its unmodified form.

This particular example is offered with just two previous owners and a relatively low mileage, covering under ~600 miles over the past five years. It has a current MOT valid until June 2024, is in great overall condition, and has been stored in a dry environment for the past nine years. Despite being on the road for over 33 years, it maintains its striking appearance and is undoubtedly worthy of close inspection by both enthusiasts and collectors.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Martin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned many Peugeots over my life but the 205 GTi is one of the best ones I've driven.

Having been a fan of 205s for many years, the opportunity came up for Martin to buy this lovely GTi example, he said, "I've owned various Peugeot variants throughout my driving life, and I wanted to experience a more modern classic 205. I've cherished this car for ~9 years now, and it still provides a fantastic driving experience".

Martin's granddaughter is currently learning to drive, and the sale of his 205 GTi will contribute to this endeavor, he went on to say, "As my granddaughter is growing up, I thought it would be a good idea to use some of the funds tied up in the 205 to support her".

If you have any questions about the car, Martin would be pleased to answer them in the comments section below.

Exterior

The beautifully characteristic GTi, regarded as one of the greatest hot hatches of all time, appears in remarkable condition despite being on the road for ~33 years.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15" Speedline SL299 alloys, finished in silver, beautifully complement the classic look of this car. In this specific example, the condition matches the limited recent use the car has experienced, as we didn't observe any significant signs of aging or damage. There were a few indications of curbing on the front wheels, but nothing excessively concerning.

The wheels are fitted with Evergreen EH23 tires, which also seem to be in good condition. Both the front and rear tires are dated from 2015, with no noticeable signs of cracking on the outer sidewalls. The tread specification remains consistent at 185/55 across all four corners.

Please refer to the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this 205 GTi and for a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car maintains well-aligned shut lines, and we couldn't spot any visible panel distortions. The 205 GTi gracefully displays its age here, as both doors, the bonnet, and the boot open and close smoothly.

During our visit, we didn't come across any significant dents on the car. However, we did notice a minor pin mark on the rear driver's side quarter panel and a slight blemish on both the driver's and passenger's doors. There were no evident signs of corrosion that we observed, and the current owner's practice of storing the car in a dry environment has undoubtedly contributed to its condition.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Peugeot looks in great condition, with the silver finish looking very good.

The paint appears well-preserved, benefiting from dry storage during Martin's ownership. The colour and finish appears consistent across the entire car. We did not identify any significant scratches, though we did observe some minor paint blemishes near the driver's and passenger's door panels.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please, take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass sections on the 205 GTi appeared to be in excellent condition, including the windscreen, windows, mirrors, and lenses. We didn't observe any cracks, chips, or significant scratching during our visit.

The sunroof also appeared to be in great condition. We did notice a few minor marks on the perspex sunroof guard, but they were not of major concern.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself.

Interior

With an interior crafted by automotive design genius Paul Bracq, Peugeot created a lovely, roomy space for the driver and passengers alike.

Seats and Carpets

The smart half-leather sports seats are in great condition on the most part, however, there are signs of wear beginning to show on the driver's bolsters.

Upon closer examination, the rear seat section appeared to be in remarkably good condition, with hardly a mark on this area.

The cabin carpets are also in great condition, displaying minimal signs of aging and having been well-maintained throughout the entire interior. Additionally the boot section likewise was presented well.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

All original, the black dashboard appears to be in respectable condition, although there was a noticeable mark above the fan controls. The top of the dashboard is well-preserved, showing no signs of splits, cracks, or warping.

The odometer displayed ~136,891 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls are beautifully maintained; all the surfaces appear clean and clear, with no fogging or scratching. We did not observe any issues with warning lights when starting the car from cold or during our road assessment.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the 205 GTi's dashboard. Head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A distinctive sports GTi steering wheel is installed in this cockpit, boasting a lovely black leather finish that matches well with the rest of the interior. While there were no major concerns observed, there were a few signs of patina.

The gear stick displayed only minimal signs of wear related to its age, with no visible damage, maintaining a lovely condition. The handbrake also appeared to be in great condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The 205 GTi reaches 0-60 MPH in ~7.8 seconds and on to a top speed of ~127 MPH with ~128 BHP on tap from its 1.9L engine.

Engine and Gearbox

Martin reports that the car starts from cold without any issues and drives well, with its smooth manual gearbox as demonstrated in our On the Road video.

We took the car on some local roads with the current owner to gain a better understanding of what this vehicle offers. During the drive, we went through the motions, shifting through the gears in the GTi and receiving an overview from Martin's perspective on the car's performance.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold and for a closer look underneath the Peugeot, as well as an overview of the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive, we didn't detect any significant knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension, overall the car performed as anticipated without any observed issues.

There were a few instances of rattling, but this is generally common among cars from this era.

The 1.9 GTi comes equipped with disc brakes all around from the factory. These brakes felt sturdy, with no noticeable pulling or vibrations during the journey, allowing the car to come to a stop smoothly, meeting our expectations.

We cover the underside of the 205 in our 'Mechanical gallery' section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

On the road the 205 GTi performed well, providing a comfortable ride of a commuter car in the majority of day-to-day driving scenarios. It also had enough power for a fun drive out on a country road, the engine picked up well and gears engaged without a problem.

The handling is supportive and forgiving, it has controlled damping that keeps the 205 well-behaved.

In summary, the car is a real delight and really charismatic.

Electrics and Other

The electronics in the 205 GTi are relatively straightforward but are in good condition. During our visit, we observed that the fuel gauge, oil temperature gauge, speedometer, rev counter, and temperature gauges were all functioning without any issues. On the dashboard, you'll find air flow and cabin temperature control dials.

A modern addition to the car is the updated Sony radio system. The glovebox operates without any problems, opening and closing as expected. A notable feature of the Peugeot is its electronic windows, which operated smoothly during our testing, as demonstrated in our review video.

Martin let us know that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and everything is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

With just 2 former owners, this hot-hatch comes to market after ~9 years of ownership and fewer than ~400 miles travelled in the last year.

This example comes to market with just 2 former keepers and considerably low mileage over the past ~5 years with under ~600 miles covered.

A recent MOT valid until June 2024 has been completed. Overall, the car is in great condition and has been dry stored for the past ~9 years by the current owner. The car comes with many MOT certificates, as you can see fanned out in the photos below we have detailed the most recent MOTs in the table.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle. Should any questions be required, Martin would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.
