Introduction

Adam Purrier
Consigner

The 930 is a true icon - wide-bodied, rear-engined, and turbocharged; it’s a car that earned its reputation as the '80s supercar slayer.

The 911 Turbo (930) is a defining chapter in Porsche’s prestigious history - a bold, turbocharged expression of performance and style. First introduced in the mid-1970s, the 930 took the world by storm with its aggressive flared wheel arches, deep front air dam, and unmistakable “whale tail” rear spoiler. By 1983, the model had been refined into a high-performance machine, powered by a 3.3-litre turbocharged flat-six engine that delivered thrilling acceleration and a distinctive exhaust note.

The 930 offered serious performance for its time, with explosive power delivery that earned it a reputation for being both exhilarating and demanding to drive, delivering a raw, engaging experience which still remains an exciting drive today. The 911 Turbo remains one of the most iconic and collectible models ever to wear the Porsche badge.

This example comes to market with from ~32 years ownership, having been imported in to the UK in 1987, the car originally having been delivered to Monaco. This car could be considered a recommission or rolling restoration project - it has benefitted from some light recommission work already over the past year, after having been sat unused for over 10 years prior.

The car looks solid within its core structure, e.g. sills, floors, kidney bowles etc - the main areas of rust are on the wings in the usual areas, and corrosion on the bumpers. The interior shows well for the most part, but would be improved with the continuation of the restoration project. The engine looks like it's been untouched for a long time and would benefit from a refresh / rebuild, however, it is a running example, with the engine starting first time even after its time off the road.

With some work still to do, the 911 will always be a highly sought-after classic no matter the age or the mileage, well worth a detailed look for someone with a little time for a new project.

This listing was written from information supplied by Adam after liaising with Derek the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A beautiful car that just needs to find the right home for the future to continue my restoration dream.

This car has been in the current ownership for ~32 years, Derek tells us more about his past few years ownership, "It's taken time to get it back up and running. I know there is still more to do on it but I will certainly miss it".

With less time on his hands, and having been largely in professional storage in his ownership, Derek is parting ways with the car as a way of freeing up some capital for another opportunity.

Should you have any questions about the car, Derek would be happy to do his best to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

Still brimming with original charm and classic sporting style, this 911 just needs a little work to shine once more.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 16" Fuchs wheels and these are finished with black centres. All appeared to be in good condition, we didn’t notice any major damage, just the occasional age-related marks here and there.

The front of the 911 is fitted with a mix of Yokohama and Bridgestone tyres, with a spec of 205/55. To the rear, the car is fitted with Yokohama A-008P's with a spec of 225/50. We noted a large amount of cracking to the sidewalls of the tyres, which has been flagged up as non roadworthy in a pre-MOT.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this 911 and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Porsche, for the main part is very good and the corrosion present is found in localised areas (known for these cars) and shouldn't be too difficult to resolve for a specialist.

The front wings have corrosion around the headlights, with the OSF being more pronounced. It may be possible to save both wings by removing and cutting out the impacted areas, as the rest of the wings look in good condition. The bumpers show corrosion which can be typical on these cars and again not a big job to resolve. Finally there's some small areas of corrosion on the skuttle and also around the Porsche badge on the bonnet.

The rest of the car looks good with no corrosion spotted around the lower parts of the B-pillar (a usual telltale sign of corrosion coming from inside to out by the kidney bowels) and looking inside the rear wheel wells the kidney bowels look in solid condition. The rest of the panels looks in good condition including the sills, floors and door shuts.

The panel lines look straight and well-aligned too. Original build quality still shows nicely as we looked over the car on our visit; both doors and boot open and close without concern with the panels gaps all looking to line up well.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in an attractive colour choice of Zinn Metallic, the coverage is decent and showed nicely in the sunshine.

We noted a few concerns with the paint which we've highlighted through our exterior review video. There were a few stone chips across the bonnet, blemishes to the finish by the front wing and marking to the drivers side rear arch. There were a handful of other marks across the finish, wear to the finish on the engine grille and signs of under paint corrosion by the Porsche emblem and to the lower rear area.

Looking over the roof, the top section showed minor concerns where this area hasn't aged well. Overall, as part of the other restoration works needed to bring it back to the quality it deserves, of course a respray would be of benefit here.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The rear and side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching on the glass. Looking over the windscreen, there were signs that the laminate had started to split away from the main glass.

The seals look in keeping with the age of the car and showed in respectable condition. Some areas of the trim in the interior had started to lift away from their fixings which is to be expected, but overall, presented quite nicely.

Badges and emblems are present and correct.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review the video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

image

Interior

Blending classic Porsche refinement with just the right touch of sporty flair, subtly reminding you that this is no ordinary 911.

Seats and Carpets

The seats showed nicely and are finished in black. We noted some signs of wear to the seat bolsters, typical for the age of the car - but actually very minimal.

Looking over at the rear, the seats showed in reasonable condition, but these would benefit from being tidied up.

The main cabin carpets show in respectable condition.

In the front boot section, the carpeted area was poorly fitted but showed in good condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in reasonable shape for the driver facing area, although the top section has signs of age and splitting.

The classic Porsche 5 dial setup looked good and all sections were functioning as expected. The odometer was set in Kilometres given it's an overseas example, and showed with ~118,740 KM's at the time of our visit.

The rest of the switches and controls all appear to be in nice condition, with surfaces free from fogging.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer and rev counter were all functioning without concern when starting up and driving the car.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather trimmed classic Porsche 3-spoke steering wheel shows well, overall no concerns were noted here.

The manual gear selector also looks to reflect the same condition.

image

Mechanics

Fitted with a turbocharged 3.3L flat-six and four-speed gearbox, the 930 delivers raw, race-inspired performance - cementing its status as a true Porsche icon.

Engine and Gearbox

The car started up from cold on the first attempt after being stood for a couple of months the Porsche performed well after start up and ran well and ths short drive around.

Minor noises were heard from the engine bay whilst driving e.g. an exhaust blow through and a slight rattle at times that could be timing chain - please watch the On the Road video to see more. The engine hasn't been touched for a long time so would of course benefit from further investigation and a possibile refresh / rebuild for total peace of mind.

We took the car out and around a local private road due to having no MOT to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issues from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. All bearings have been checked and are in good condition. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, showed without major concerns.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported through the pedal, the stopping power and control was inline with our expectation given its time spent unused. The brakes have been stripped and cleaned, they are in good condition, passing a rolling road test with flying colours. We did note some noises whilst on the road, we suspect that was due to the brakes bedding in. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

The drive out in the Porsche was steady, mainly due to this example having not been used for some time. Overall, we were pleased with the performance and the drive of the 911.

We kept the speeds low due to the brakes having not been in use recently, but noted no major concerns with the handling or how the car behaved out on the short journey.

image

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in good condition. The 911 is complete with a spare wheel, immobiliser alarm, new battery and its original service book.

Derek told us everything was in working order, as far as he was aware.

image

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~32 year ownership, the car has been off the road for ~10 years, and has had some light recommission work actioned in the past year, with a little more time and attention, the 911 could be a real stand out.

The 911 had been properly stored in a secure unit for ~10 years, after this it has spent some time sitting stationary on the driveway. Over the past year some recommission work has been actioned, and the car started up first time which was a great note. Previous maintenance was carried out by specialist Chris Turner in North London during its time on the road.

Key observations in the service history include; A new indicator column switch, renewal and rewire of the fog lamps, washer pump, new fuel cap and replacement wiper blades, plus an update for the throttle linkage and clutch adjustment all done in April 2006. Part of the other servicing aspects include; turbo servicing, new fan belt and oil line work carried out in April 1998, gearbox shift fork works actioned in August 1997 and rear bumper respray and nearside panel restoration completed in April 1996.

The car doesn't have a current MOT, and so we were only able to drive the car around some private roads outside of its current storage.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Good afternoon, are there any documents such as a certificate of authenticity to confirm if the car is matching numbers, and what the original colours are?

Hi , Sorry, I’m late seeing the auction. Sounds like the engine is only running on five cylinders. How long has this problem been apparent? have you tried to address it? As you’re no doubt aware a Turbo engine rebuild is rather expensive ! I guess the reserve is mikes away from the current bid? Thanks

Is this definitely a euro spec car? If a decode the VIN it states its a US spec car. This is the reason why it would be great to have copy of the option code sticker which also lists all the optional (AC, lsd, sport seats ecc….)

Thanks but the option code should look different than the one on pag 7….the sticker should also be present under the front bonnet. Should state the VIN, colour code interior and esterior and a list of the options code. Can you see if the find it?

Hello, a couple of questions if I may:
– I see the air conditioning system has been removed. Is that correct? What was the reason? Do you still have the hardware?
– can you please share the option list sticker? If not wrong its no longer under the front bonnet but you should have a copy in the service book.
– Can the car be viewed maybe this Sunday or Monday?
Many thanks
Filippo

Hi Filippo, Kulraj here from Trade Classics.

DerekE has answered some of the questions above. In relation to the air-con, this was removed during the recommission work as the lines were dry-rotted (typical for this era of 911). The parts are included, with the exception of the lines which have been thrown away as no longer usable.

With regards visiting, this won’t be possible this weekend, but if you could email us at hello@tradeclassics.com, with some options for Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, we will see what can be arranged.

Best,

Kulraj – Trade Classics
