1985 Porsche 930 Turbo

Now available for sale

It doesn't get more iconic '80s than this - it was the car of our childhood dreams and bedroom wall posters.

The 930 Turbo is an awesome car. It’s the poster car of the 1980s. It’s the car that we all wanted and loved, even with its dark side reputation as the ‘widow maker’ - the only other car to get that title was the AC Cobra.

Being a 1985 model, this car is fitted with the 4 speed transmission as the later G50 box was only put in the 930s during the final year of production in 1989.

The 930 is fitted with the larger 3.3 engine and just as ‘bullet proof’ as the 3.2 Carrera version - but with a lot more power.

This car has had a lot of love and attention spent on it, including a 'windows out' respray back in 2016/17. More recently it's been prepared properly for the new owner to enjoy and comes with a fresh MOT and importantly no advisories - this right-hand-drive 930 drives just as good as it looks.

Meet the owner

Adam has been meticulous in getting his 930 Turbo ready for the new owner - it's a real credit to him.

This striking example of the 911 Turbo (930) is owned by Adam Purrier from Trade Classics. He’s owned the car for around three years now - it was a bit of an itch that he needed to scratch!

Adam is a big fan of the Porsche marque, having first owned a 996 and catching the bug from then on. His personal collection now includes an equally beautiful 1989 Carrera 3.2, and a more modern 997 C2S, along with this 930.

As mentioned, the Turbo is the poster car, and this example finished in the iconic Guards Red colour really caught his eye. Adam loves to drive his cars on long Grand Tour trips and mountain drives, and having owned and used this car he actually felt it wasn’t suited to his driving style. The power from the 3.3L turbo is intoxicating, but not his cup of tea when high up on a mountain road!

Because of this, and the fact that he likes to drive and not just store his cars, this example is now available for sale.

Shapes don't get any more distinctive than this - it's a big deal 930 Turbo that looks gorgeous from any angle.

Wheels and Tyres

The correct fitment original Fuchs, importantly with 9in deep-dish on rear, have been fitted to the car.

Adam purchased this set at a cost of just under £2,000, as the car had an incorrect smaller set of Fuchs when he purchased the vehicle.

Now they fill the wide rear arches beautifully - one of the best aesthetic features of the 930 and of course they are in great condition as can observed in the media.

The bodywork on the car is in excellent condition as you'll be able to see in the images and videos.

Importantly the panel gaps are all good and the doors, engine lid and bonnet open and close with a reassuring sounds and feel.

Around four years ago the kidney bowls on the 'B' posts were both replaced - this is a usual job as there are no plastic inner wheel arch protection covers on 911s before the 964 came in during1990.

The underside has been reviewed and checked out prior to the recent MOT - it's all solid as can be seen in the images and videos with no signs of any rust to worry about.

The finish on the paintwork is also excellent and just pops our in the sun.

Just recently the car has been machine polished and a layer of Swissvax 'Best in Show' applied - the finish and shine is even and consistent across the car and really make the car's lines and reflections look awesome (yes the photo above is actually of this car - light painting by Glyn).

Technically speaking, as the car was properly resprayed, i.e. 'windows out', there are no masking lines, or anything to let the car down.

The only small things to note are a few small chips, very small, two on the skuttle, one the OSF wing and a small one on the engine lid. They are very small and we are just pointing them out and you will be able to see in the media - they could be easily remedied by a mobile paint specialist.

Glass and Trim

Both the glass and trim on the car are in great condition. The rubber window seals as observed in the videos look good, and other areas such as the door handles and window frames are finished in satin black with no marks.

The windscreen has been replaced at some point and is in perfect condition.

The cabin in this 930 is a wonderful place to be - black leather, red piping, corner hugging seats and those black and orange clocks staring back at you - goose bumps.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in really good and original condition with a lovely level of patina.

The deep black carpets look great completing the double black look.

The dashboard and dials are a big feature on this car and the orange needles on the black dials really pop out at you.

Adam has refreshed the gauges, and this can be seen in both the videos and images of the car, no typical fading of the outer black rings.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car has been fitted with a more sportier three spoke Momo steering wheel, and the gear stick is the original stock design.

Adam comments that whist not original, the Momo really does suit the car, it gives the driving experience that extra edge and feel that you just don't get with the larger stock steering wheel.

This car drives like it should - hear that turbo spool up before this rocket ship pins you to the back of your seats - hold on tightly and set the time machine to 1985.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is the real heart of this car and performs exceptionally well - starts first go from cold or hot and steadies to a smooth tick-over.

The engine bay looks very clean and a lot of time and attention has been spent on it in the past.

Adam also informs us the clutch and gearbox performs without issues, changing gears with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has no knocks or rattles coming from the suspension.

The brake calipers were refreshed recently, as they were a little sticky as is typical with the G model Porsches, especially if they haven’t been used for a while.

The suspension bushes have all been checked as part of recent work and are all in good order.

The Drive

The drive was without fault, the 3.3L pulling strong and the turbo kicking in between the 4,000 and 5,000 RPM range (see video).

Oil pressures and temperatures are all as expected on the drive too, i.e. 1-2 bar on tick-over when hot and then 3 bar at 3,000 RPM’s.

The temperature gauge keeps to the middle once out on a run in warm weather - all considered normal for turbos versions.

Electrics and Other

There are no issues with the main electrics, e.g. alarm, sunroof, windows, lights and radio all function well. However Adam mentions that the wing mirrors and driver's seat actuators may need to be attended to if the new owner wishes.

History and Paperwork

A 930 Turbo with a great history file and that all important service book - rock solid investment.

The previous owner said the car was destined for Hong Kong (there is an address in the service book delivery), however, he said the order wasn’t completed and it was sent to the UK as this is a right-hand-drive car. Adam has tried to confirm if this is correct and requested the CoA from Porsche (see media file) that shows a build date of 25.02.1985. It had its first service on 27.06.1985 in London and the V5 states registration as 09.07.1985, so whilst he can’t confirm if this claim is valid, it does seem to be.

The car comes with the original service book with stamps throughout its life, with a similar number of MOTs, and more recent invoices of works completed on the car.

Recently the car has had new turbo dump valve gaskets, new front fuel pump and also the CDI unit and alternator have both been reconditioned. Giving the new owner peace of mind that the usual failure suspects have all been addressed. The calipers have all been removed, inspected, cleaned and put back together. At the same time the car was put up on axle stands and the whole underside cleaned and inspected - it's in great condition as you can see in the medial pack. Not that you would use the car in the wet winter, however, if you are caught out then you know it's all good and not to worry.

The car will also have a full engine and gearbox oil service before the new owner pics it up - Valvoline VR Racing mineral oil will be used (unless otherwise requested).

The car is showing just over 111,092 as of 21.09.2020.
