Introduction

The Supersport Carrera Cabriolet is amongst the most exclusive of the air-cooled 911s.

Built in the factory’s Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) the M491 option was known as the Supersport, factory numbers are hard to confirm, but it is believed that just 26 Cabriolets were produced in RHD over its 5-year production. The Supersport was the car that kicked off a Porsche love affair with the wide-body look for non-turbo 911s. Furthermore, the H-Series Cabriolets were fitted with a power-operated hood and the G50 gearbox.

This 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Supersport Cabriolet is finished in black with a recently re-connollised black and lipstick-red leather interior. It is also one of just six cabriolets to be fitted with factory-applied LE rear wing vents. The body has been stripped down to bare metal and it has also seen a gearbox rebuild along with an extensive engine and mechanical renovation. I've had the car since 2020 and there's been around ~£28,000 worth of spending. It's got an impressive service history, full owner wallet and booklets, two keys and an MOT to October 2025, this is a great chance to obtain one the most celebrated and rarest air-cooled generation 911s.

Exterior

The Porsche was subject to a windows out, bare metal respray in 2020.

Wheels and Tyres

The refurbished alloys present positively with no significant marks or damage.

The car is fitted with Continental Contact+ tyres, the rears are new and all have plenty of life in them.

Bodywork

The car's structure and underside is solid. During its 2020 body restoration, the corrosion in the sills were cut out and replaced.

The exterior panels are flush and are free of any corrosion or panel damage. All doors open and close freely. The bonnet has recently had the struts replaced so it stays open.

Paint

The black paint has a deep shine and matching colour. There are a handful of minor marks in places but the overall body presentation is smart.

Glass and Trim

The glass and rubber seals are all in good condition having also seen new door seals. There are no distracting issues with the lights and lenses.

The external trim is in line with the cars age, with minor signs of age on bumpers and air intake tray.

Interior

The seats, door cards and dashboard have seen leather reconnollising.

Seats and Carpets

The black and lipstick red leather seats have been treated to a recent refurbishment and are therefore in excellent condition.

The carpets are complete and damp-free.

Dashboard

The dashboard and door cards have also been treated to leather reconnollising. All controls are working to my knowledge and the dials are all legible. All of the interior lights and door mirror switches are functional.

I have gone through and replaced minor elements of the interior such as the switch rubbers to ensure they look as good as possible. The headlining and cabin trim is in good shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are smartly presented too as you can see.

Mechanics

The gearbox was completely rebuilt ~around 3,000 miles ago and is complemented by servicing as detailed.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up with no problems, idling without any unwanted noises. It has a history of maintenance and was last serviced late last year. Amongst the recent items on the engine include a new starter motor, an ignition lead set with distributor and rotor, a breather valve and pipes, a fuel pump, a reference sensor and NTC 2 sensor. The engine cosmetics have seen attention thanks to new rockers covers, tinware, engine clips and brackets.

The G50 gearbox has been fully reconditioned along with a new full clutch kit, linkages, rubbers, clutch slave cylinder and new clutch pivot forks. The 3rd and 4th gears have been renewed as part of the work.

Suspension and Brakes

The whole of the suspension has been renewed, with front and rear shocks and mounts. A pair of rear Torsion bar covers and front roll bar bushes have also been renewed.

Its braking has seen plenty of attention as part of the 2022 mechanical renewal with new front and rear brake pads, sensors, rear discs and new handbrake shoes.

The Drive

The Porsche 911 comes with a formidable reputation that has not diminished with age, its uncompromising character and raw talent are one that needs respect, but once mastered, the rewards are unrivalled.

Due to its extensive suspension, braking and steering renewal, the car drives exceptionally well. The positive history of maintenance and servicing ensures that the engine pulls well, with no hesitation or unwanted actions.

A recent Turbo steering arm kit, along with a driveshaft gaiter kit ensures that the steering control is sharp and free of play or wobbles. He hasn’t reported any issues with the engine temperature or oil pressure.

Electrics and Other

The soft top is in great condition, with no notable wear. The rear screen is good with minor signs of age. The fully electric folding top has been fitted with a new module relay.

The car comes with a Blaupunkt DAB stereo and a new pair of JVC speakers.

History and Paperwork

A rare 911 Supersport with factory optioned LE air-vents, bare metal re-spray and restoration, ~5 years owned and suspension overhauled too.

First registered in October 1987 by Monarch Porsche in Warwick, it comes with an excellent provenance, which includes a folder full of invoices. SinceI nought it, ~£28,000 has been spent on the car, which includes a bare metal respray, a reconditioned gearbox, and extensive mechanical and cosmetic work.

It has 17 service stamps, with its latest full service carried out in November of 2024. It has an MOT to October 2025 and comes with its complete owner wallet with booklets and service book, tool kit and two keys.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
