Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Classic looks, a visceral driving experience and fabulous handling – it’s a Porsche of course!

Classic 70's styling and Porsche engineering have guaranteed a committed and loyal following for the 924. First introduced in 1975 the car was a huge sales success with over 150,000 finding homes during a production run of just over 12 years. Originally powered by a VW 2.0L engine the powerplant was replaced in 1986 with Porsche’s own, 2.5L straight four then being used in the 944. Initially delivering ~148BHP in the 924S power was further increased to ~160BHP in 1988. Interestingly, this model of 924S was slightly faster than the similarly powered 944 due to its lighter weight.

This is exactly one of those cars – this, 1988 model, 924S is a fantastic example coming to auction in stunning “Guards Red” paintwork with Porsche script interior trim. The interior presents beautifully, the car has good history and comes with a private registration that has been with the car since its second owner. Clearly cherished by its current and previous custodians, this 924S is coming to market from ~2.5 years ownership and is now ready for a new owner to enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The engine pulls hard and revs freely, the handling is fantastic and all accompanied by that wonderful soundtrack, intoxicating!

This was Andrews first Porsche and it took him a while to find it. He says “I looked at nearly twenty 924s before settling on this one, which is in exceptional condition for a 34-year-old car. As soon as I got the car, I asked my workshop to attend to every minor detail, including rear boot seals, rear heated screen and rear wiper. Air filter, plus regular oil and filter changes, all up to date”.

He goes on to say “Like the previous owners’ I’ve always looked after this car - the belts and tensioners were changed in October 2019, then re-checked and tensioned 600 miles later. Since then, a stainless centre box and rear silencer have been fitted as well as the rear discs, shoes and pads renewed. This was my first Porsche and led me on to a 944 S2 and, just last year, a Cayman. Sadly, I don't have the space or time to use all of them so, it’s time for someone else to get acquainted with this delightful classic”.

Andrew will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Classic 80’s Porsche styling – Instantly recognisable flowing lines and pop up headlights all presented in iconic Guards Red.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15-inch “Teledial” alloys, wheel nuts and Porsche badged centre caps look in excellent condition and we could see no signs of damage or curbing.

The wheels are wearing 195/65/R15 tyres that have good tread remaining. View the image gallery and video review for a close up.

Bodywork

This beautifully styled Porsche stands straight, panel gaps look good and doors, bonnet and boot all open and close with precision. The sunroof fits well and opens and closes exactly as it should – all very typical Porsche engineering.

We’ve taken plenty of pictures and videos - do take a look and see how good this car actually is.

Paint

Surely the best colour for these cars, the “Guards Red” paint presents very well with a deep, even shine across the car. There are some, very minor, blemishes as would be expected and, prior to Andrew’s ownership, some over-enthusiastic polishing has led to a small area of primer becoming exposed on the roof edges.

The bonnet and front wings have been resprayed and, on very close inspection, some variation in the finish can be seen. We really had to search to find this though and, overall, the paint looks great. The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, rear and side windows all present in good condition and are clear with no major cracks or scratches. There is a very small chip in the front windscreen although this has not affected the MOT. Mirrors and lenses appear clear and unbroken.

Black trim looks good all round with only a very small area of flaking on the windscreen surround. Overall, the trim and badging meet the very high standard of the rest of the car – difficult to believe this 924S is 34 years old!

Interior

In amazing condition with Porsche script trim – this interior would not be out of place in a 1990 showroom.

Seats and Carpets

The condition of the seats and carpets on this car is amazing. Seats finished in black leather with Porsche script cloth inserts have very little wear. Likewise, the deep black carpets look great in the cabin and the boot, again, showing very little wear at all. The dashtop, so often a vulnerable area on these cars, is unmarked with no marks or splitting.

Take a look at the Interior Review video and the images to see this amazing cabin for yourself – we think you’ll agree it’s rare to find a 924 interior this good.

Dashboard

The Dash appears in exceptional condition with no cracks or marks and little evidence of fading despite the cars 34 years. Dials are clear, all switches, gauges and buttons appear undamaged and Andrew confirms everything works exactly as it should. He’s even tested the speedo against his GPS and assures us it’s spot on! – This is a Porsche after all.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather covered, Porsche branded, steering wheel presents very well and the gearstick, gaiter and centre console all look in great condition too.

Mechanics

1988 saw the final upgrade to the 924 range – with power boosted to ~160BHP this eager, flexible and responsive unit could deliver a factory specified 0-60 in 7.7s.

Engine and Gearbox

The naturally aspirated, in-line, four-cylinder engine delivers power to the rear wheels though a five-speed manual gearbox. On our "Cold Start" the car fired up straight away and quickly settled down to idle steadily. Gauges looked good and emissions appeared clear.

Andrew has fitted an aftermarket throttle cam which he tells us gives a more progressive throttle feel. The original throttle cam comes with the car too. Watch the video to see the engine and the car in action on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

The 924S has vented discs all round and the calipers look fantastic through the Teledial wheels. Rear discs and pads were replaced less than two years ago and, this being a Porsche, you can be assured it will stop as well as it goes.

The Drive

Fantastic! The car pulls well, there are no knocks or rattles, gear changes are slick and Andrew describes the power steering as certain and progressive. This 924S feels planted, hinting at the legendary handling for which this model is famous.

Electrics and Other

Buttons, switches and gauges all appear in great condition and Andrew assures us that all electrics work exactly they should. A Blaupunkt radio/CD is fitted.

History and Paperwork

Once the best kept secret of the Classic Porsche line up, the 924 is now fully at the party and is an increasingly sought-after classic.

The 924 was progressively improved over a 12-year production life. The late model 924S has the most powerful non-turbo engine and is the very best of the range. One in this condition is not to be missed. With all the characteristics you’d expect of a Porsche - beautifully engineered, fabulous handling and beautiful looks these cars guarantee a visceral driving experience and are likely to prove a sound investment.

The comprehensive document file includes a strong service history, previous MOT certificates and extensive receipts showing careful and diligent ownership. Also included are original handbooks, service manual and two keys.

The registration PAS 924S will be sold with the car, a nice touch.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Hi
Can you confirm the radio is working?
Thanks

That’s helpful in terms of being well looked after ..but its a bit of a Boris Johnson answer in terms of addressing the question.

So, as they say on Dragon’s Den…” For that reason………”

Hi, Looking at the photos there seems to be a little bit of impact damage to the right front chassis just behind where the right lower wishbone bush anchors, and adjacent to the jubilee clips attaching the new exhaust centre box to the slightly distorted downpipe. I also note from the invoices that on one of them is says ” front right bumper bracket realigned” and there was an MOT advisory on the functioning of that wishbone/bush , which also looks slightly as if its had an impact.

While not wanting to sound like Benedict Cumberbatch’s version of Sherlock…has this car accidentally run into and over a big bad rock at some time?
