Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The last and best of the front-engined 944 line, powered by a 3.0L 16V and Turbo styling, this Porsche is ideal for summer cruising whilst also having refined handling capabilities.

The 944 was first announced in 1982, it was a new front-engine, rear-wheel-drive mid-level sports car based on the 924. In '89 Porsche introduced the S2 which had the same rounded nose and a rear valance found on the Turbo model, and featured the largest production 4-cylinder engine available at the time. A new gearbox was fitted to utilise the ~208BHP on offer, in manual guise it's a proper drivers car.

This car is in care of Greg at Southam Bodies, owner of one of the best auto repair shops in the country. He's carried out the typical fabrication work that these cars need at this age, as well as some necessary paintwork to keep this car keenly priced and ready for the new owner to enjoy from the get go.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Greg the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's no secret I love the cars Porsche has to offer, the 944 is no different, especially in the S2 guise.

Based in Southam, Greg specializes in high-quality paintwork and custom refinishing. He has over twenty years of experience and people travel from all over Europe for his expert services. Our very own Adam at Trade Classic has had numerous paint jobs carried out by Greg and can genuinely say it's the best work his cars ever received.

Greg purchased this 944 from a previous customer in need of some help, and since then he has carried out mechanical work on the brakes and worked on some typical areas for concern on this model, notably attending to any bodywork fabrication across the sills, wings and 1/4s, whilst painting both sides of the car. He'll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

With the Turbo look front and back, the S2 is a definite improvement on the standard 944.

Wheels and Tyres

The 'Design 90' wheels look finished to a very high standard. When we consigned the car we only noticed some very minor black marks, something that a deep clean should sort.

The tyres look in good condition too, Kumho KH A-Team rubber dated 2006 at the front, and on the rear you'll find Tigar Syneris dated 2009 - each tyre appears to have plenty of tread left on them. Please review the external media pack for a detailed look.

Bodywork

Overall, the bodywork has a very clean finish. All the panel gaps and body lines look very straight and true, a good example of Porsche engineering. Greg attended to any necessary bodywork refurbishment, typical areas on the 944; sills, wings and 1/4 panels.

Please take time to study all the high-resolution images and videos to appreciate the condition of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in a lovely 'Taubenblau Metallic Blue' which will certainly turn heads wherever you go. The overall condition of the paint looks to be very good, the front bonnet has a few stone chips, in line with the age and mileage, and some very small areas of paint cracking around the rear diffuser. Greg has painted both sides after attending to the bodywork refurbishment, the paint having an even finish and colour across all of the car.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Glass and Trim

The condition of the glass and trim appears to be in line with the age and mileage of the car. The front windscreen has a very small crack on the passenger's side. Along with some very small cracking on the rear offside light cluster.

Greg reports the convertible roof functions as it should, without fault in a quick fashion.

Interior

The interior is a great example of the quality Porsche puts in, looking great with familiarity with the 911 in places too.

Seats and Carpets

Light cream leather adjustable seats are finished with high-quality stitching and appear in great condition especially for the use and mileage of the car. The only area to note is small signs of repair on the driver's seat and armrest. However, you'll have to get really close to notice them.

The door cards, roof lining, and carpets match the overall very good condition.

We have captured high-resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the hard-wearing Porsche interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks in great overall condition. Greg reports that all the switches and controls are also fully functional and in good condition with minimal signs of wear. One thing to note is the passengers side of the centre console is missing the digital clock.

Please review the interior media pack to see the '80s charm in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Porsche steering wheel and the gear selector appear in great condition and are wrapped in hardwearing black leather .

Please take a look at the extensive photos and videos for a closer look at the cabin space of this 944.

Mechanics

The 3.0L 4-cylinder power-plant along with superb handling makes for a proper drivers car.

Engine and Gearbox

When lifting open the bonnet, a bright blue cam cover takes center stage. It's a nice touch to this clean and highly original engine bay. Please take a look at the mechanical video showing this 944 S2 starting from cold without any fuss. Greg reports an excellent drive in the 944, plenty of power when required with excellent handling - 0 to 60 in ~6 seconds.

The gearbox is said to be fully functional with no issues. The sound deadening on the bonnet appears in very good condition with no signs of significant wear. With the mileage of the car, Greg mentions that the new owner will likely want to action a belts service. Watch the video review to see the car spring in to life.

Suspension and Brakes

All the running gear is said to be in well-maintained order, Greg has attented to the brakes over his ownership.

Please take a look at the photo and videos of the brakes and suspension for a closer look.

The Drive

The 944 everybody wanted, with the 3.0L offering 208BHP, Greg reports a great sporty drive in this example.

The new custodian will be able to pop the roof down and enjoy the fresh air with a naturally aspirated soundtrack.

Electrics and Other

Greg has reported the electrical system is in line with the rest of the condition of the car and in fullly working order to his knowledge, with the exception of the digital clock mentioned before.

The car is fitted with a third-party high-end Pioneer DAB radio, with various connections inputs to bring the multimedia functions of this car into the twenty-first century.

History and Paperwork

The company's most successful production car before the Boxster - we can certainly see why. The 944 S2 demands a premium over it's older siblings.

The 944 S2 Cabriolet comes with a good amount of healthy and regular MOTs reports from the past 15 years. Please take a look at the car's history in the media pack below. Importantly for a 944 like this which has covered a significant mileage, the typical bodywork issues that can develop have been attended to by Greg himeself, of renown bodyshop Southam Bodies. The work he carried out this year included; refurbishment of the brakes, bodywork refurbishment covering sills, wings and 1/4 panels, paintwork across both sides of the car post body refurbishment. With the important fabrication work covered, and a sympathetic paint on both sides, the car still has some age related marks to the front but it leaves the car in good stead, whilst also being attractively priced.

Checks carried out by us; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.
