The 964 combines classic Porsche styling and takes it up a notch with its '90s styling updates.

Referred to as the 964 series, this Porsche was a natural evolution from its predecessors and despite similar visual cues, it was considerably updated combining the character of previous models with more 'modernised' ‘90s style. Porsche added the rear wheel drive Carrera 2 variant to the range in 1990, with the 964 being the third most popular model in the line up.

Considered a true successor to the Carrera 3.2 of 1984-89 - the 964 is a fun, rear-engined sports car with a fabric roof designed with all the great elements of original Porsche, but beautifully combining more modern styling of the era.

Having had its major service completed in July of 2021, this particular 964 has had several key components replaced as part of the works carried out with oil pipes, hoses, oil level sender and the starter motor all being replaced. Being a cabriolet model, the Porsche also comes with a 'one touch' electric power retractable roof. A current MOT is valid until 22.07.2023 with the Porsche showing no advisories and represents a lovely opportunity for its future owner to own a piece of quality German engineering.

Meet the owner

Still a head-turner after all these years - Porsche style and design just doesn't go out of fashion.

Being an avid fan of all things Porsche, Robin was initially attracted to the Carrera due to its stunning colour, "Being my favourite colour it matched my blue Porsche Taycan and also, due to it being automatic it was what I was used to driving".

Porsche is renowned for its style and pace and considering it's a 30 year old car; "it is still reasonably fast and still turns heads wherever it goes. I love the ease of driving it, with the Tiptronic gearbox it changes gear so smoothly".

The car had some major work carried out in July 2021, with an invoice of over £5,000 and also carries some additional styling elements with an RS front spoiler, which was an optional extra at the time of purchase. Robin loves the experience of driving an air cooled 964, and is selling the car as he's on the look out for his next sports car.

Exterior

A lovely Cobalt Blue finishes off the exterior with an attractive contrast against the light grey Interior

Wheels and Tyres

17" Porsche 5 spoke wheels cover off all four corners and showed in a respectable condition, we saw some light signs of curb scratches and a few marks, but overall the wheels showed well. The centre badges were showing their age but an easy and cheap item to replace.

The tyres were a mix of Continental on the fronts and Goodyears to the rear.

Bodywork

Paneling looked to align nicely around the exterior with the fabric roof also showing well with no rips or tears that were apparent on our visit.

Paint

Cobalt Blue looks fantastic on the car with a good finish overall on the panels. We found some slight signs of paint bubbling around the windscreen section which we've photographed as part of our 'Exterior Gallery' section for you to assess.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Glass and Trim

The glass around the 964 shows in a nice condition, respectable given the age of the car - trim shows well and the windscreen showed no major issues that were a concern. The plastic panelling on the retractable roof section showed well but was a little aged, again, given that the car is over 30 years old, we had no concern with this. The near side side front light lens has a crack presumably due to a stone.

Interior

A beautifully sporty cabriolet that gives both the driver and the passenger an impressive place to take in the journey ahead of them.

Seats and Carpets

With its comfortable and supportive 8 way electrical seating on both front seats, the view out from the driver seating gives a great range of visibility and perspective on the road ahead. The light grey colourway against the Cobalt Blue of the cabin interior makes for a lovely contrast and really stands out.

Floor sections showed to be dry underneath the carpet and wear was in keeping with the quality of the rest of the interior sections.

The carpets could benefit from a good level of cleaning to bring them back up to a great standard.

Dashboard

The dash shows in a good condition without signs of splitting or cracking although it could benefit from a good level of detailing to bring it back up to its former glory. The design and layout of the dash area is classic Porsche, with everything within the drivers' eye to keep you focused on the important factors.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We noted no signs of major wear or marking on the wheel showing in an appropriate condition for a car of this age. The gearstick is in good condition although does show some signs of age given the white finish.

Mechanics

With its major servicing being completed in 2021, over ~£5,000 was spent bringing the 964 up to speed for the benefit of current and future ownership.

Engine and Gearbox

Having had its major service completed in July of 2021, the 964 had several key components replaced as part of the works carried out: oil pipes, hoses, oil level sender and the starter motor were all replaced as part of this servicing.

With the beautifully smooth 4-speed, Tiptronic transmission the gearbox handled well and showed us no issues when we visited the car.

We drive the car on some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. On the drive we run through the gears and get an overview of how the car performs.

Suspension and Brakes

No issues were observed with the braking or suspension elements of the car with everything functioning as to be expected. No advisories were raised with the suspension or brakes as part of the last MOT.

The Drive

Out on the drive the kickdown worked nicely and gave plenty of acceleration on the journey. Gears felt smooth running through the Tiptronic gearbox and the engine sounded great with no issues that we observed.

Overall a really smooth and enjoyable drive with the Porsche working as it should, catching admiring glances from passers by. Robin has owned the car for around ~1 year with the main reasoning for change the desire to own something different to what he has been used to.

Electrics and Other

An aftermarket Pioneer CD player was installed in 2006 and the functioning electric sunroof worked without issue when we visited the car. We did note that the air conditioning in the car was non functioning along with the rear spoiler - so this would need to be looked into by the new owner.

The 964 comes to market with ~85,383 on the clock, a respectable amount of mileage for a car past its 30th birthday and has benefitted from a recent major service.

The Porsche comes to market with its June 2022 MOT showing no advisories on its test and is valid until 22nd July 2023.

Hi Robin, I can see the car seems to have had a rust repair in the past around the windscreen do you have any pictures of the work which was done and the extent of the corrosion there please. Looks great in that colour. Many thanks Doc James
