Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The Porsche 911 is one of the most successful selling sports cars in the world, with design and performance like this, it's easy to see why.

Born in 1963, the Porsche 911 has become a bit of a legend with an iconic design that is still constantly evolving. The launch of the 996 generation in 1997 replaced the 993 and marked one of the most significant changes in 911 history. A redesign developed by Pinky Lai (also responsible for the designs of both the 987 Boxster and Cayman), showed design features that smoothed the body lines and pushed the windscreen back slightly.

It wasn't just the design that was updated, with the introduction of a rear water-cooled flat-six engine and a more curvaceous, spacious and aerodynamic exterior which was also comfortable and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver. The updated Porsche offered a level of comfort which made it so appealing to many.

The love for 996s are firmly on the up and this one comes with an MOT that is valid until March 2024 and a new sports exhaust upgrade. The car has travelled fewer than ~3,000 miles in the last 3 years and comes with a good level of previous service history, and importantly had the IMS bearing upgraded in the past.

If you're in the market for a smart new affordable sports car, with investment potential and enough power and performance to keep a smile on your face, well look no further than the Porsche 911 Carrera 4.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always loved this car, Porsche quality and design is something I admire so much.

Having been a fan of Porsches for as long as he can remember, David is a real fan of 911 quality and performance, he told is, "It's a really good car and feels really sporty. You feel safe in it when on the road and its a fast, lovely drive".

After ~2 years ownership, David has decided it's time to find the car a new owner, he goes on to say, "I love the look of the car and really quality design but the time has come to give it up to a new owner".

David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Pre-facelifts are growing in popularity as they are being recognised as the pure design iteration of the 996.

Wheels and Tyres

The Carrera is complete with a set of 18" silver Sport Classic II wheels. These are in good condition thanks to all four wheels being refurbished in May 2016. These had a few marks noted to them but overall these complimented the cars exterior really well. If we were being picky, these could benefit from a good clean up to bring them up to a nicer standard.

Equipped with a set of Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres to the front and rear, the tyres have a spec of 225/40 to the front and 265/35 at the rear. Front tyres are date coded at 2015 with the rears showing 2019.

The condition of tyres on the 996 looks good overall with no obvious cracking or real signs of wear. However, please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Porsche and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands level, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from Porsche build quality. We noted no dings or major areas of concern when looking over the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Vesuvio Metallic Grey (Paint code L40X) the coverage is nice and even across the car and overall presents to a good standard. This is one of the more interesting colours to be offered by Porsche. It's appearance is dependent on the lighting, where in the shadows, it's quite grey but in direct sunlight, there is a strong purple tone to it.

In line with the mileage and use of the car, we did observe some swirl marks and some slight markings around the exterior of the paintwork, but nothing overly concerning when we looked around the car.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the Porsche showed in a good condition with no major cause for concern. Windscreen, side windows and rear window all look good with no significant scratching, marks or chips.

The seals look good around the outside and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Rubber sections on the interior edges looked good and only showed a few signs of wear, which is to be expected.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

With a driver focused cockpit and a smart leather interior, both driver and passenger will feel at home in the luxurious and comfortable cabin area.

Seats and Carpets

Overall the seats show in a good condition - there were signs of creasing to the leather on the seats and a few marks mainly on the side bolster sections of the seats, but nothing out of the ordinary.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The leather bound stitched dash looks to be free from any splits and cracks and showed well on our visit, this area looks good in the interior with only minor marks here.

Clocks and dials showed nicely with ~72,052 miles at the time of our visit.

We noted no warning lights on the display when the car was started up and on the road. The dash area showed with a lovely level of presentation and all dials are functional showing clearly with no obvious scratching to the facings.

Please take a look at the gallery images for a closer look at the interior sections.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A straight forward leather bound steering wheel sits at the hands of the driver when entering the cabin area. Overall the steering wheel looks good but is showing some signs of wear.

The 6-speed manual gear stick looks good with minimal wear to this area and in line with the rest of the interior. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Fitted with a naturally aspirated, flat-six mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox - the 996 was the first 911 to feature a liquid-cooled engine producing ~296BHP and a 0-60 in ~5.0 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

Porsche are renowned for great quality and fast cars and this is not exception to that rule. The 911 features a liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated, flat-six 3.4L engine that can achieve ~174MPH thanks to the introduction of its four-valve cylinder heads, variable valve timing, integrated dry-sump oiling and new variable resistance intake system.

We noted no issues from start up either which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the mechanical review video. Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the 911 start up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the engine. We go into further detail about the Porsche and take it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about. Importantly on this car, the IMS bearing was upgraded in the past.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, David took us around some local roads, we heard no unwanted knocks, bangs or noise from the suspension which provided an enjoyable journey. We cover off the underside of the 911's exterior in our Mechanical gallery section.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

Feeling solid on the road and smooth through the corners the 911 engine feels very strong and powerful.

We take the 911 out on some local roads to get a better feel for the car. Head over to the 'on the road' video to hear our thoughts on the journey, additional feedback from the owner and to see how the car performs.

Electrics and Other

The electric elements in the 911 are a relatively simple setup, there is an aftermarket Pioneer stereo added to the dash area. The Vehicle Identification optional equipment codes - detailed in the servicing book, note the Porsche includes; (288) Headlamp washer, (438) 8-way electrical seats, (601) Litronic (xenon) headlamps, and (C16) UK LUX spec including tinted windows and special paint.

David told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

With a new sports exhaust upgrade, and upgraded IMS bearing, fewer than ~3,000 miles travelled in the last 3 years and a good level of service history, the 996 is well worth a closer look.

The Porsche 996 comes complete with its original service book, 2 keys, drivers manual and other official booklets along with its leather log book.

A new sports exhaust was fitted in March 2022, air con pump was replaced in July 2018, the bonnet strut and radiator were replaced in July 2016, in May 2016 the engine was stripped down, new timing chains installed and also all four wheels were refurbished, coil packs were changed in September 2015 and a new radiator cooling fan was installed in December 2010. In the past, the IMS bearing was upgraded by Strasse of Leeds as detailed in the invoices.

All four wheels were refurbished in October 2009, a new clutch kit and rear crank shaft was replaced in May 2009, link control arms were renewed in August 2008, rear wishbones and front drop links were replaced in April 2008, rear trailing arms were upgraded in April 2007, the centre glovebox was repaired in May 2006, vario cam seals were replaced under warranty in May 2005 and front and rear disc brakes were replaced in May 2004.

Should there be any questions required, David would be happy to answer these in the section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Hi there – your 911 looks lovely. I noticed there was a squeak, perhaps the starter motor, on start up. Is that something you know needs sorting ? Would you be able to let me know the garage that last serviced it so I can ask re the coolant. It look a little low and it’s also blue…I believe it should be pink. Hard to tell of course on a video. Cheers
