Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The most affordable way into 911 ownership.

Porsche’s forward-thinking approach led to a revolution in the 911 lineage with the launch of the 996 in 1996. Breaking away from the traditional air-cooled setup, the 996 brought the iconic rear-engined sports car into the modern era. Yet, there was no compromise to the bloodline — in fact, the 996 was quicker, more refined, and more usable than its predecessors. With improved stiffness, reduced weight, and increased power, it retained the classic silhouette while appealing to a wider audience.

This particular car is a well-maintained, nicely specified Carrera, offered by Russ after six years of ownership. Having recently treated himself to a 997, he's now ready to let the 996 go to a new enthusiast.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Russ the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“I’ve always been a Porsche fan — the 996 has been amazing, but it’s just time for something newer.”

Russ has thoroughly enjoyed his time with the 911 Carrera over the last six years. The car was given a clean bill of health following a full inspection before he purchased it, and it came with an excellent service history, which he has continued to maintain. Memorable European road trips and weekends away with his wife have made for a special ownership experience. The only reason for sale is the arrival of a newer 997 — but the Porsche badge stays in the garage.

Exterior

Finished in desirable Seal Grey, the paintwork presents very well.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with GT3-style split-rim wheels by a previous keeper, the centres have been colour-coded to match. Some blistering under the paint is visible, but these could easily be refurbished to look as-new.

The car sits on a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. While they still have a good amount of tread, there are some signs of cracking at the edges due to age.

image

Bodywork

Overall, the bodywork is in good order, with even panel gaps and no dings or dents. Russ had both front wings professionally replaced due to minor rust rather than attempting repairs — a neat and permanent solution. A tiny blister is visible at the base of the nearside rear quarter. The car also benefits from a factory tilt/slide sunroof, which operates correctly.

image

Paint

Seal Grey suits the 996 shape beautifully, and the paint is in excellent condition with no major chips or scratches noted.

Please examine the high-resolution images and video footage provided to assess the condition from all angles.

image

Glass and Trim

All windows are clear and free from excessive scratching. The trim and seals are in good condition overall, with some light fading to the plastic around the windscreen wipers, common for this model.

image

Interior

A classic black leather interior makes for a timeless and practical pairing with the Seal Grey exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather heated seats are in excellent condition with only minor signs of wear consistent with age and mileage. The carpets present well, aided by factory Porsche overmats.

The front luggage compartment is clean and tidy, complete with the original space-saver spare wheel and complete tool kit.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from cracks or splits. There is a small scuff around the head unit surround - the result of a head unit being refitted, which Russ has covered with some Porsche lettering.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather-trimmed steering wheel is in good condition, showing only minor wear to the grain. The gear knob has some light wear but could easily be replaced if desired.

image

Mechanics

The 996 Carrera delivers a sharp and responsive drive — with a flat-six soundtrack to match.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by the 3.4-litre flat-six, the engine starts cleanly with no smoke on cold start (as seen in the video) and runs smoothly. The Dansk stainless steel sports exhaust system and K&N air intake enhance the sound without being intrusive.

The more desirable six-speed manual gearbox offers precise shifts and allows you to make the most of the engine’s performance.

image

Suspension and Brakes

A previous keeper installed the M030 sports suspension, which gives the car a more composed and engaging drive.

On the test drive, there were no knocks or bangs. The brakes perform well, with no judder and the car stops in a straight line.

image

The Drive

This is a proper driver’s 911. With its naturally aspirated 3.4-litre flat-six, precise steering, and manual gearbox, the 996 Carrera is a wonderfully engaging sports car. Comfortable on long-distance journeys and agile on B-roads - it’s a true all-rounder. And let’s not forget, it’s still a 911. What’s not to love?

image

Electrics and Other

All switchgear appears to function correctly. The air conditioning has recently been re-gassed and blows cold. The factory head unit is still in place and includes the integrated satellite navigation system.

History and Paperwork

Anyone considering a Porsche knows that service history is critical — and this example does not disappoint.

The car comes with a fully stamped service booklet and accompanying invoices detailing ongoing maintenance and servicing. A pre-purchase condition report from Russ’s ownership is included, which confirmed the car was in excellent mechanical condition when acquired.

The most recent service was carried out on 22/11/2023 at 102,794 miles. The odometer currently reads ~103,955 miles.

Also included are the original owner’s manuals, three keys, and a spare blade.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions — no matter how small — please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
