Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The Porsche 996 communicates to its driver like few other cars of its era do.

The advent of the water-cooled 911 added a new dimension to the legendary series of Porsche's most iconic model. Rolled out in 1997, the 996 series not only stabilised Porsche's fortunes but introduced the brand to many who were attracted to its practicality, comfort, refinement and stability without losing any of its sports car appeal. A 2002 upgrade to the 911 brought in further improvements to the styling, structural rigidity and power. Fitted with the new 3.6-litre engine, the 996 soon became recognised as one of the better-handling 911s offering tremendous grip and traction. While it has the new generation of water-cooled engines, the flat-six note is still distinctive enough to quicken the heart, getting you to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. The combination of the short precise throws of the gearbox and impressive torque in an open-top modern classic, the 996 is an ideal starting point for those curious to see what all the fuss is about.

This cleanly presented 2002 convertible comes with a hardtop and features the UK Lux specification, "Metallic Polar Silver" paint and tinted glass. The car comes to market after ~1 year with our vendor it also has PSM, Xenon headlamps, a BOSE Sound System and a full black leather cabin. It comes with 14 service stamps, two keys and a long MOT valid until 02-04-2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's been a very satisfying experience to drive and own.

Bought as a leisure car, Andy has been delighted with his experiences with the 911. By good fortune, he found a well-looked-after 996.2 with a hardtop and soon came to appreciate that versatility. Having been garaged by the previous owner, it has also been kept indoors since he bought it in the summer of 2024.

The car has been seeing less use in recent months due to work commitments and is now regrettably selling. Andy will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in Polar Silver, the car presents smartly and is enhanced by its hardtop.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18” Carrera 5-spoke alloys are in excellent shape with no significant signs of age.

The tyres are all recent fittings, the fronts are Bridgestones and the rear's are Nankangs fitted in March 2025. They all have plenty of life in them. Andy has a spare Bridgestone tyre that can be taken away by the new owner.

image

Bodywork

The exterior presents positively with flush fitting panels, even panel gaps and no obvious corrosion. There is a minor dent on the lower section of the passenger door, but otherwise, the panels are in good shape. All of the doors open and close with ease. The underside of the car is in good shape, and the floor pan, wheel wells and jacking points looking solid.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in "Polar Silver" it's a colour that is often sought after and less often seen compared to "Arctic Silver". The paint has a consistent finish with a positive lustre, the front bumper does look to have seen paint in the past and displays a slightly different shade as pictured.

There are a few minor marks on the body, these appear to be attributed to stone chip damage on the lower bonnet and a few marks near the passenger door handle. There is also a scratch spotted just above the sill close to the nearside rear tyre.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, only showing a little lamination damage on the base of the windscreen on the driver's side. The lights and lenses are good, and the headlamps lenses are clear, with the nearside item showing light scratching.

The trim is complete, with no issues with the glass and door seals, although the offside rear glass trim shows signs of age. The bumpers are flush to the body, the front item shows minor stone chip wear and a few light scuffs.

image

Interior

Very original and well-looked after, the full-leather interior still impresses.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are in good shape, and the driver's side shows age-related creasing but nothing too distracting.

The passenger footwell carpet shows a little wear, but otherwise, the carpets and mats are clean. The front luggage area is in good order, with light signs of use.

image

Dashboard

There are a few minor marks on the dashboard padding and centre console, but generally, it displays well. The facia, binnacle, dials, buttons and switches are in good order, all are said to function as they should.

The door cards are in good shape. Both the hard top and soft top headlining are in good condition.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel displays well. There is mild wear noted on the gear lever.

image

Mechanics

It functions as a competent sports car while maintaining a reasonable level of comfort for daily use.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts with no problems, idling smoothly as the dashboard warning lights all stay off. The exhaust condensation cleared moments after as the engine warmed up, with no unwanted fumes or smoke. The engine runs evenly and there is no evidence of fluid leaks.

The engine is cleanly presented with healthy-looking components. The exhaust shows mild signs of age. The 6-speed gearbox operated without fault, changing gears smoothly with a well-weighted clutch.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides smoothly, free of vibrations or clunking from the wheels. It absorbs the roads without any knocks. The top struts inside the wheel wells show mild signs of age but do not appear to have any negative effect.

It brakes confidently free of any judders or squeals.

image

The Drive

With civil road-holding and practicality it is neatly balanced by the athletic performance that the 3.6-litre 996 offers, offering the best of both worlds. The car conducts itself smoothly on the move, we kept the speeds low, as the car managed the bends and road imperfections with no outstanding flaws.

The steering operates as you would expect, with no negative feedback. It's often considered one of the 996’s string points, so Andy's praises on its sharpness and feel are encouraging. Andy has been happy with its reliability, with no reported issues with the oil pressure or engine temperature. It was a warm day, but the engine fan never kicked in.

image

Electrics and Other

The hard top is in good condition, with minor marks in places. It lifts off without any problems. The soft top is clean with a few minor age-related marks, with no evidence of outdoor elements. The soft-top motors operate without any straining. We didn't test everything during our visit but Andy told us to his knowledge that everything was in working order.

History and Paperwork

Regularly serviced, the car comes to market from just shy of a years ownership, and the last major service was carried out just ~500 miles ago.

First registered in Surrey in August 2002, the car retains its service book and has seen regular stamps, despite periods of inactivity. It also comes with a folder with invoices that go back to 2007.

It received a major service in July 2024 before being handed over to Andy. At the same time, it had replacement air conditioner condensers. It saw all round new discs and pads in 2020. There is a 2015 invoice for a clutch repair kit, control arm and compressor renewal. Earlier invoices includes a new alternator, exhaust work and coil packs. It has an MOT to April 2026 and comes with two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
