Introduction

Adam Purrier
CEO

Quality engineering, iconic styling and fantastic performance – when it comes to automotive legends, the 911 is one of the greats.

The launch of the 996 generation in 1997 replaced the 993 and marked one of the most significant changes in 911 history, with the introduction of a rear water-cooled flat-six engine and a more curvaceous, spacious and aerodynamic body.

The 996 was hauled into the modern era in 2001, where even more revision was updated on the Porsche with new headlamps, revised steering and suspension along with interior upgrades.

The Porsche comes to market here with a host of additional upgrades from factory and some previous owner added ones also. The factory extras include; Bose speakers, cruise control, air con, stainless steel sports exhaust system, sports suspension, full leather heated driver and passenger seats, leather front console and upgraded roof lining as well as many more upgrades included as part of the car pack.

An aftermarket Alpine head-unit and amp has been added and 6 disc CD autochanger also which cost over ~£2,300. A great bonus with the Porsche is the electric slide and tilt sunroof. The car also has had its engine and clutch kit replaced in August 2010 after ~32,000 miles. Another great bonus for the future owner is the amount of additional beneficial work the Porsche has had completed on it, with regular Porsche servicing as well as many other servicing works over the past few years.

On the flip side, the car does need some bodywork to bring it up to standard and once done we think this will make a great drivers' car being coupe and manual.

This listing was written from information supplied by Adam after meeting Frances the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The look and feel of a Porsche for me is unrivalled, from the bodywork style - down to the performance of the engine, its a car I've always wanted to own and drive - I've ticked that box.

As a self confession 'petrolhead', Frances, the current owner, purchased the 996 for a big birthday as she's always dreamed of owning one, she told us, "There's just something about Porsche that I adore, the shape of them, the quality of the drive, its a car that has held my attention for years".

The car has been in the family for just over a year now, Frances said, "Both my younger son and I really love the Porsche, its a car that he really enjoys being in as a passenger and I know that he enjoys showing the car off to his friends, unfortunately the time has come to give the car up to a new owner".

Frances has only used the car a few times but now the car needs a little more attention and care from the next owner, "Having really enjoyed the 996 over the past few months I'm hesitant to give it up, but with limited time on my hands, the car needs some work carried out that I just don't have time to arrange".

Exterior

The Porsche 996 really looks so on point with its triple black finish, a real drivers choice and we can't think of a smarter colour combination.

Wheels and Tyres

This 911 996 is fitted with 18" Carrera 5-spoke wheels from factory and are fitted with Continental Sport Contact 2s showing with a profile of 225/40 to the front and 285/30 to the rear. These are date coded from 2017 at the front and 2018 at the rear. The tyres are showing with a low amount of tread where the future owner should consider changing these with safety in mind.

The wheels do show some signs of curbing and a few marks in some areas and may benefit from a refurbishment.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this 996 and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from Porsche build quality.

There are areas of corrosion on the bodywork on the 996 which we did note on our visit. The rear wing sections where the wings meet against the rear bumper are effected, along with both front wings also. The nearside front wing stands in a poorer condition than the offside, and would benefit from restorative work to remove these effected areas and bring these sections of the bodywork back up to standard.

It will be worth the future owner taking note of these areas which we've highlighted in more detail in our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos. Take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Black Metallic finish is a really popular and smart look for the Porsche. The paint covering is even across the panels although we did note signs of micro blistering on the flat panel sections which may be down to a car cover used in the past. We did observe a few additional marks on the paint when reviewing the exterior as you'll see in the images.

The 996 would benefit from some attention, detailing and polishing by the future owner to bring that original shine.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Top tinted windscreen section, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. Door cards showed nicely and gave a great impression looking around the Porsche.

The seals look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Rubber sections on the interior edges looked good and only showed a few signs of wear which is to be expected.

Interior

With a driver focused cockpit and a smart leather interior, both driver and passenger will feel at home in the luxurious and comfortable cabin area.

Seats and Carpets

Heated leather sports seats for both driver and passenger with lovely embossed headrests give a welcoming feel to the interior as you enter the car. Overall the seats show in a good condition, there were a few markings on the seats mainly on the side bolster sections of the seats but nothing out of the ordinary.

Roof lining and leather sun-visors showed in a good way having been fitted as an optional factory extra.

Carpet sections showed in good condition on the passenger section with only a few signs of wear. The drivers side was good but had some drivers foot wear, although not an area of concern. Porsche branding was in place on the carpet sections which added to the styling of the cabin interior area.

Dashboard

The leather bound stitched dash looks to be free from any splits and cracks and showed well on our visit, this area looks good in the interior with only minor marks here. Clocks and dials showed nicely with ~98,909 miles at the time of our visit. The display on these sections displayed a lovely level of presentation and are all functional showing clearly with no obvious scratching to the facings.

The gloss black veneer fascia on the centre console surround looks really smart in the cabin. There was a button on the dash area that would ideally need replacing by the future owner due to being pressed into the dash section.

The cabin area felt really secure when we were out in the Porsche and is set up to be a real drivers car. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Porsche dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the steering wheel and gearstick show and feel in good condition but with a few signs of wear to both, the aluminium look gearstick is an optional added upgrade from factory. Porsche branded 3 spoke leather bound wheel is a simple setup and provides the driver with a solid grip on the road ahead.

The Porsche is a real drivers car with its 6 speed manual gearbox.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With its flat-six water-cooled 3.6L rear mounted engine, the 996 is capable of some seriously impressive performance.

Engine and Gearbox

Porsche are renowned for great quality and fast cars, this is no exception to that rule with its 3.6L engine easily capable of taking the owner up to speed in no time at all.

We noted no issues from start up either which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the "Mechanical Review" video. The Porsche's engine and clutch kit was replaced in August 2010 after an insurance claim.

Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the 996 start up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the 3.6L engine and sports exhaust system.

Please note, due to all our electrical checks on the car before the road test, we had run the battery down slightly (the car hadn't been used for over a week) which we explain further in the video section. We go into further detail about the Porsche and take it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out Frances took us around some local roads, the braking felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the sports suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

We cover off the underside of the 996's exterior in our Mechanical gallery section. As we highlighted in the bodywork section of the Porsche's listing, we did note signs of rusting on the car which will be worth taking the time to look over the images and see for yourself what's on display here. Equally, head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself.

The Drive

As expected from a car of this calibre, the drive provided by the 996 C4 is exceptional, with more than enough power, torque, and grip to keep you entertained. We noted no pull from the steering, juddering or unwanted movements. The Porsche also offers a lovely interior complete with modern driver comforts.

Between performance, practicality, and comfort, the 996 ticks more than enough boxes. Head over to the on the road video to hear our thoughts on the journey and to see how the car performs.

Electrics and Other

This 911 996 comes really nicely equipped with some desirable extras; Bose speakers and 6 disc CD autochanger, cruise control, air con, litronic lighting system, stainless steel sports exhaust system, handbrake and gear lever finished in an aluminium look, sports suspension, full leather heated driver and passenger seats, sports seat backrest, leather front console, leather roof lining, footwell lighting, Thatcham alarm, self dimming rear view mirror and rain sensor are included as part of the car pack.

A new aftermarket Alpine headunit has been added with the original included also. We did note a slight mark above the stereo system likely present due to the installation. Electric slide and tilt sunroof worked well and added an extra level of luxury to the car.

Although we were unable to test every feature on the car as part of our "On the Road" review, Frances lets us know that all electrical elements are working as they should to, to the best of her knowledge.

History and Paperwork

The 996 has had many years of servicing by official Porsche dealerships and so much beneficial work carried out on the car - the engine and clutch has also been replaced on the 996 after ~32,000 miles.

The Porsche comes with a great amount of service history and has also had an engine and clutch replacement in previous years. We cover off some of over ~100 receipts for works carried out over its years in the section below.

We are unsure about the replacement of the IMS bearing, it may have been upgraded as part of the engine replacement but there's no paperwork to prove that.

Hi Frances, in a couple of the photos there is damage visible under the car by the jacking points. Just wondering if this happened in your ownership or if you know how it happened?
Thanks

Hello Frances, it mentions an insurance claim, can you comment, is the car an insurance write off ( Cat c/d/n/s ), also it has quite a mot advisory list, have any of these been done or still outstanding.
Thanks
Steve.
