Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The 997 Carrera S is a big step up over previous models, bringing to the table a familiar wider stance, but also an uprated ~350BHP from its 3.8L flat six engine.

Porsche are world renowned for engineering top of the range sports cars with blisteringly quick performance and undeniable build quality, with the 997 variant of the 911 Carrera 2S being no different. Packing a 3.8L flat six engine, ~350bhp delivered to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox, and all the luxury and commodity we’ve come to expect from Porsches over the years, the 997 Carrera 2S provides a brilliant, well rounded, and invigorating experience for the driver.

This particular example comes to us with ~82,100 miles on the clock, a ~1.5 year ownership, and a solid service history along with a six page invoice from renowned specialist Hartech rectifying most, if not all, of the problems that these models are known for. With no bore-score to worry about, and some high performance parts too, and comes in a nice specification of "Seal Grey Metallic" over black leather interior, Sport Chrono Plus, and this cabriolet comes with the 6 speed manual gearbox.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Ivan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Growing up in Ukraine, it had always been a childhood dream to own a Porsche 911, so after graduating from university I finally bought my dream car as a 31st birthday present to myself!

Ivan moved to the UK at the age of 13 from Ukraine, where he had always considered the Porsche 911 to be his “Poster car” as a child. After many years of hard work, Ivan graduated from university and eventually purchased his 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S as a 31st birthday present to himself. Having been sold the car with a full bill of health, he quickly started to notice a couple of issues with the car and upon further investigation discovered the car was not as healthy as it had been described. After sending the car away to Hartech to have the issues investigated he ended up spending ~£11,500 (an additional £4,000 paid by the dealership he bought the car from) rectifying some typically 997 S issues to make the car perfect.

It's been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, and after getting it all fixed, he now feels it is time to find it a new home. Ivan will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Taking inspiration from the traditional 911 front end, the 997 opted for a much desired change in direction to the more classic look.

Wheels and Tyres

The optional 19” Porsche "SportDesign" wheels are in good condition and showing no visible signs of damage or corrosion. They are are a smart option for the Carrera S, and look great on this cabriolet.

Likewise the Pirelli P-Zero tyres, dated 2018, are in good condition with no signs of damage to the sidewalls or heavily worn tread. View the gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork overall appears to be in good condition, with no bumps, dings, or knocks to speak of. All panel gaps are straight and even, and the panels don’t show any visible signs of repair either, and no signs of corrosion were spotted.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork is in good condition too, with only a few minor stone chips on the front end. Stone chips aside the paintwork is generally in good condition, the colour tone appears even across all panels and save a slight mark on the rear bumper the rest of the paint appears undamaged. The finish of the paint is even across the car, it looks like the front and rear bumpers may have seen paint in the past, presenting a fraction a different shade in some light.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the vehicle looks to be undamaged, with no signs of cracking, scratches, or major stone chips present on the windscreen and likewise the side windows are undamaged too. It's worth nothing there is a small crack to the left hand tail light.

The soft top roof has some slight marks as to be expected with the age of the vehicle, but no major damage present, and all trims are in good condition too.

Interior

Offering a redesigned cabin, the 997 is a marked improvement on previous models in terms of fit and finish, a much more luxurious feel.

Seats and Carpets

The full leather seats are in generally good condition, with age related cracking showing in the leather to drivers seat bolsters, but on the whole the leather is undamaged and free from any rips or tears.

Likewise the carpets are in good condition with the luxury pile free from any spots of wear or damage, all trim finished in black on this car.

Dashboard

The dashboard features Porsche’s typical 5 gauge design, providing a driver centric hub of information directly at your fingertips. This car has silver backed dials, including on the optional timer that comes with Sport Chrono Plus.

The dashboard itself is undamaged and in good condition, with no broken leather trim or heavily worn surfaces, some of the buttons on the centre console have wear that is typical for the 997 model.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather steering wheel is free from any damage, with the stitching intact and no signs of heavy wear present on the wheel. The same can be said for the gearstick, showing no visible signs of wear or damage, it presents in good condition.

Mechanics

With its ~350BHP 3.8L engine, sports suspension and steering, and manual gearbox, the Porsche 911 Carrera S offers a very tactile and engaging experience for the driver.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.8L flat six engine is capable of producing ~350BHP from the factory and is delivered to the rear wheels by Porsche's fantastic 6 speed manual gearbox. Both of these items have been well looked after under Ivan’s ownership, with him having sent the vehicle off to hartech for extensive works to be carried out relating to the typical bore-score issue that the 997 S suffers from. This totalled ~£15,500. A copy of this 6 page invoice can be seen in our paperwork gallery.

During our “On The Road” video the car can be seen starting from cold and also out on the road, where the car performed as expected without fault.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension from Porsche is a fantastic set up and this example proves no different in terms of quality, with comfortable ride quality under general driving, and stiff and responsive handling under load, this car comes with the Sport Chrono Plus option that allowed adjustment of the suspension. Likewise the brakes stop the car quickly and efficiently without any hesitation.

The Drive

Renowned for the quality and precision of their engineering, Porsche have not failed to deliver an excellent sports car in the form of the 911 Carrera S and this holds true for this particular example too. Capable of daily commuting and full throttle B-Road blasts, the car performs exceptionally well.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems all work as expected, with the electronically operated soft top going up and down without issue as can be seen during our “On The Road” video.

History and Paperwork

With recent works by Hartech totalling north of £15,500, this particular example has been well cared for by current owner, and comes with solid service history too.

With services spanning all the way back to 2007 and major works having been carried out to rectify practically all the known issues these cars can suffer from, this 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S (997) is well placed for a new owner to enjoy. Ivan has gone to great lengths to make sure that whoever owns the car next will not be faced with the same issues he faced after purchasing, the extensive list of works carried out by Hartech is worth a read as they have looked into every nook and cranny of the car to sniff out any problems or issues the car has or may potentially have in the future, the dealership he bought the car from paying an extra ~£4,000 to Hartech on top of the £11,500 he spent.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

The lack of heated seats in a cabrio is such a shame. cruise is neither here nor there on a sports car i don’t think.

Sorry to hear the experience you’ve had
