Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

The 997 Carrera S is a big step up over previous models, bringing to the table a wider stance and ~350bhp from its 3.8L flat-six engine.

Porsche are world renowned for engineering top of the range sports cars with blisteringly quick performance and undeniable build quality, with the 997 Carrera S being no different. Packing a 3.8L flat six engine, ~350bhp delivered to the rear wheels via 6 speed manual gearbox, and all the luxury and commodity we’ve come to expect from Porsches over the years, the 997 Carrera S provides a brilliant, well rounded, and invigorating experience for the driver.

This particular example comes to us in the care of Caroline, who is sadly selling the car as part of her brother’s estate. This is a well spec'd car from new with options including, Bose sounds, sunroof, Sports Chrono pack, white clocks and memory / heated seats. The car has recently had a £7,000 engine rebuild, and is still in the "running in" 1,000 miles phase from the work.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Caroline the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having been in the ownership of her brother for the last ~7 years, sister Caroline is now looking to find his pride and joy a new home with someone who will cherish the car in the same way he did.

Originally purchased in 2014, Dale spent the next seven years tinkering, enjoying, and maintaining his dream car - the Porsche 997 Carrera S. Prior to his passing Dale was in the process of rebuilding the engine and sadly did not get a chance to finish it, however in preparation for sale Caroline sent the car away to Cavendish Porsche Specialist to finish the work Dale started and get the engine back together.

Cavendish Porsche have now rebuilt the engine, an invoice for £7,000 can be found in our paperwork gallery along with service history and plenty more receipts documenting maintenance over the years. Importantly other work last year includes the front crossover pipes (a typical issue), new brake discs / pads, spark plugs, two front shocks and even engine mounts. Caroline will do her best to answer the questions about the car, but please be mindful that this was her late brothers car.

Exterior

Taking inspiration from the traditional 911 front end, the 997 opted for a change in direction from the styling of previous models and kept the design simple and elegant.

Wheels and Tyres

The 5 spoke alloy wheels are a simple and classic design, overall these are in good condition with the exception of some light marks around the outer edge of the lips on some of the wheels that can be seen pictured in our exterior gallery. Other than this the wheels look to be in good condition with no visible buckles or major damage.

The wheels are dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres which look to be in good condition, with a decent amount of tread left and no visible damage or degradation to the side walls present either.

Bodywork

The sleek bodylines of the 997’s design are uninterrupted from front to back with all panel gaps appearing even and properly aligned. All panels look to be undamaged and free of dings or damage too.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Seal Grey Metallic paintwork is in generally good condition, with the exception of a small stone chips to the front bumper there are no obvious points of damage on the paintwork and no mismatched paintwork that we could see either.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the vehicle looks to be undamaged, with no signs of cracking, scratches, or major stone chips present on the windscreen and likewise the side windows are undamaged too.

The surrounding trim and seals also look to be in good condition with no obvious signs of damage visible.

Interior

Offering a redesigned cabin, the 997 is a marked improvement on previous models in terms of fit and finish, really solidifying the Porsche luxury interior design aesthetic.

Seats and Carpets

The full leather seats are in good condition, with little more than some very minor stress marks to the drivers seat bolster, but on the whole the leather is undamaged and free from any rips or tears.

Likewise the carpets are in good condition with the luxury pile free from any spots of wear or damage.

Dashboard

The dashboard features Porsche’s typical 5 gauge design, providing a driver centric hub of information directly at your fingertips. The dashboard itself is undamaged and in good condition, with no broken trims or heavily worn surfaces. Likewise the infotainment system is in fully working order with no damage to the screen or surrounding interfaces.

There is some usual wear to the heating control buttons due to the soft surface material - an easy fix with replacement buttons available on line.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather steering wheel is free from any damage, with the stitching intact and no signs of heavy wear present on the wheel. The same can be said for the gearstick, showing no visible signs of wear or damage, it presents in good condition.

Mechanics

With its 3.8L engine, sports suspension and steering, and ~350BHP to play with, the Porsche 997 Carrera S offers a very tactile and engaging experience for the driver.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.8L flat-six engine is capable of producing ~350BHP from the factory and is delivered to the rear wheels by Porsche's 6 speed manual gearbox. The engine has had recent rebuild work carried out by Cavendish Porsche Specialist totalling just over £7,000, and still within its first 1,000 miles "running in" phase.

With this car being an earlier 2005 model the IMS bearing is not cause for concern, and with the engine having been out and rebuilt, some detailing in the engine bay would improve the appearance.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is, as expected from Porshce, generally very comfortable with the ability to handle corners with ease. During our short ride out we noticed no knocks or bangs from the suspension and the ride was comfortable.

Likewise the brakes stopped the car efficiently and without noise and there appeared to be plenty of material left on both discs and pads on the day of our visit.

The Drive

Renowned for the quality and precision of their engineering, Porsche have not failed to deliver an excellent sports car in the form of the 997 Carrera S, being capable of both daily commuting and full throttle B-Road blasts with ease.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we checked that all key electrical items were working, including the lights, infotainment screen, and air conditioning and we’re happy to report there were no issues in this department.

History and Paperwork

With a comprehensive service records, recent engine rebuild, and a folder full of invoices and receipts this 997 Carrera S comes with plenty of history.

Having only had two former keepers, this 997 Carrera S has seen consistent and regular maintenance throughout its life with a well documented service history to back it up. During Dale’s ownership the car was subjected to the beginnings of an engine rebuild and upon landing in the care of his sister Caroline, the engine rebuild was finished by local Porsche Specialists, Cavendish, to the value of just over £7,000 - in our paperwork gallery a comprehensive list of parts and works carried out can be seen.

The car comes with the following options from the factory; Silver Faced Stopwatch; Automatically Dimmable Mirrors; Rain Sensor; Seat Heating; 16-Way Adaptive Sports Seats Left and Right; Seat Memory Drivers Side; Top Tinted Windscreen; European Navigation DVD; Park Assistant; Sport Chrono Plus; Sun-Moon-Roof; Telephone Module for PCM; UK Lux Spec.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello Caroline, do you have any information from Cavendish about the state of the cylinders and whether they have been relined and if so what type of liner has been used. Separately please can trade classics upload a recent photo of the rear to ensure the dropped exhaust has been resolved as you mention these photos are from prior to the rebuild work. My thanks.

Hi, may I ask to confirm from looking at the history, there are 2 x 7k bills from Cavendish for last year? The first indicates the engine was recently rebuilt, was this a home rebuild or done by another garage? It looks like the subsequent 7k bill would then indicate a further rebuild by Cavendish, presumably at this point the car was not running correctly?
Also, someone asked about the front bonnet and paintwork, there is a pic of a bill which indicates the front bonnet and both front wings were painted and blended.
Thanks

Hello. It looks in the photos and video as though the front bumper is a different shade to the bonnet and wings (see photo 53 onwards) – do you know why this is?

I’m also curious about the exhaust hanging lower on the passenger side if you could shed any light on that – normally this would indicate engine mounts but I’d expect them to have been done with the rebuild?

Thanks

Why is the passenger side exhaust hanging lower than the drivers side?

Hello,
Is the round cover for the towing hitch (by the front number plate) missing?
Many thanks.

The Porsche is variously described as ‘automatic’ and ‘manual’. Which is it please.

Thank you.

Hi,

Apologies, a small error on our part, one mention of automatic which has been changed to manual. As you’ll see in the pictures, the car is clearly a manual.

Best,

Kulraj – Trade Classics
