Introduction

Kristina Liekate
Professional Consigner

Open-top driving thrills never go out of style and the TR6 is a true roadster icon built for pure driving enjoyment.

The Triumph TR6 was launched as a bold evolution of the traditional British sports car - pairing tried-and-true engineering with a sharper, more modern design. Styled by the renowned German firm Karmann, the TR6 retained the classic proportions of its TR predecessors but introduced more aggressive, angular lines that gave it a distinctive, muscular road presence.

As the first year of production, the 1969 model holds a special place in TR6 history, capturing the early spirit of a car that would go on to become one of Triumph’s best-selling and most iconic models. With its blend of mechanical simplicity, everyday usability, and classic British charm, the TR6 continues to win hearts among enthusiasts looking for authentic, open-top driving fun.

Alastair has owned this lovely example for the past ~11 years after importing it from overseas, within that time he's carried out a great amount of restoration and maintenance, to make a reliable and very usable classic. Most notably, the car has received a left hand to right hand drive conversion which required a body off restoration. The TR6 also had a new UK 2.5L engine installed from a Triumph saloon, increasing the BHP from the lower US equivalent. The gearbox and overdrive system was also replaced with the restoration project.

We detail the overview of the restoration project in the paperwork gallery section, there is a little work to do here, but this Triumph has come a long way. More than capable of being a useable car, but with some extra love and attention, this will be a really lovely example.

This listing was written from information supplied by Kristina after meeting Alastair the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Triumph has been with me for a number of years now and I've loved every second of ownership.

Alastair the current owner, imported the TR6 from the US over ~10 years ago. As part of the import it was noted that restoration was required, and Alastair set about carrying out a great deal of works to update the mechanical aspects of the Triumph.

Triumph, like many other older cars, have been a big part of Alastair's motoring history, he tells us more about his love for this particular classic, "I've had a few older cars over the years, but Triumph for me stands out as one of my favourites and having an opportunity to import this one was something I just couldn't turn down. I knew there was a good amount of work to do, and some of the big jobs were the engine and gearbox replacement. I was so pleased to be able to change the engine which has made a big difference to it".

Alastair lets us know more about his reasons for selling the car now, "There are a few more bits of work to carry out even after the mechanical updates, I just don't have the time now to bring it up to how I really want it. I feel it's time for someone else to take this over now and get it up to the level of standard it was originally".

Alastair will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The TR6 exudes timeless cool - equal parts muscle and charm, ready to turn heads wherever it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” pressed steel wheels and centre caps look in good condition - there were just a few marks noted and some signs of kerbing to the rear wheels. Although overall, the presentation was in-line with our expectations.

The wheels are fitted with Avon Radial tyres. Both sets show with a spec of 175/70. All tyres show in good visual condition, although as we were unable to date code these, it should be a consideration to change these in the near future.

For a more detailed view of the TR6's exterior and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

image

Bodywork

The car looks solid and purposeful with clean lines and it stands straight - shut lines look good and the bonnet, boot and both doors open and close without concern.

Regarding the chassis, Alistair and his brother took the body off, updated suspension mounts, telescopic shock absorber rear conversion and repainted it. When it came to the body tub, the duo also sourced a right hand drive bulkhead, new floor pans and repainted it in the original ‘signal red’ colour. Please see the images Alistair has provided that covers this work in the gallery section below.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The red paint finish suits the car perfectly and has a respectable level of coverage across the car. There are the occasional stone chips, swirl marks, scratches and some crazing, as you'll see in the images. Remembering the focus of its restoration was mainly on the mechanical elements of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

Windscreen and side windows all look good; just a few signs of chips and scratches. Likewise, lights, lenses and mirrors all look in good shape.

The soft top roof looks in good condition and opens and closes as it should. We noted the interior trim on the door cards had come away slightly from the frame, this would be worth some restoration by the future owner.

Chrome work is generally in good condition including the headlight surrounds. Some of the brightwork is showing the inevitable age related minor signs of pitting.

image

Interior

Wood veneer, classic style, and a no-nonsense layout that’s all about driving pleasure - it’s vintage motoring at its most inviting.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are nice condition with no rips or significant marks that we could see.

Carpets showed in a reasonable state through the interior with no major marks, topped with black rubber mats. The base carpet presents with no concerning worries and in the boot, the black carpeted area showed no concerns.

Alistair said, "we fitted new leather seats, soft top and refurbished dash, plus new door cards that require fitting".

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with no splits or cracks on the top or the wooden fascia. The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~40,945 miles

The display on these sections showed a reasonable level of presentation and are all functional showing clearly with no concerning issues; just signs of age.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the TR6 dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic, 4 spoke wood rim steering wheel looks decent, as does the badged centre piece, indicator stalk and overdrive switch. Again, just some signs of age here.

Cabin sections are straight forward in design and present respectably with reasonable levels of wear noted.

image

Mechanics

Under the bonnet lies an upgraded, punchy straight-six, delivering classic sports car character - torquey, responsive, and full of old-school charm.

Engine and Gearbox

The warm start process was trouble-free, with the engine firing up with no unwanted noises heard from the engine. We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about.

Through the body off restoration, the engine was replaced with a 2.5L UK engine from a Triumph saloon, increasing the BHP from the lower US version. As part of these works, the gearbox and overdrive system was also upgraded and changed the TR6 from a left hand to right hand drive model.

Alistair told us, "we sourced the Triumph 2.5 engine block (UK spec), had it reassembled by a friend who used to rally Triumph 2000s, to include a cylinder head fitted with a PI cam, refurbished carbs to include new longer needles, stainless steel exhaust with ss exhaust, plus a diff refurb."

On the drive, we ran through the motions to see how the car performs. Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the Triumph start up, take in the lovely sounds of the engine and hear the car driving around.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issues from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

The brakes felt good and had no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car easily to a stop. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues and in-line with our expectations.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

Under the bonnet, the robust 2.5L straight-six engine delivers strong torque and a spirited driving experience, whilst the independent rear suspension and four-speed gearbox make it a capable performer on twisty roads.

The TR6 delivers a raw, open-top experience that’s all about the joy of the road.

image

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we noticed no electrical faults. Standard electrics are straightforward on cars of this era - all switchgear looked undamaged and in good working order.

A spare wheel is located in the boot.

Alastair told us that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and that everything is in working order.

History and Paperwork

With fewer than ~2,000 miles covered in the previous ~10 years, this restored and upgraded Triumph has all the right engine updates for many more miles.

After being imported from overseas, the TR6 went through a large project with body off restoration being carried out. This converted the car from left hand drive to right hand. As part of the works, the engine was replaced with a 2.5L version from a Triumph saloon, which increased the BHP from the lower specced US equivalent.

Also as part of the works, the gearbox and overdrive system was replaced.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
