Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

A charming slice of British motoring history - sporty performance with everyday usability.

The Triumph Vitesse is a true embodiment of British motoring charm - compact, stylish, and surprisingly spirited. Originally launched in the early 1960s as an upmarket evolution of the Herald, the Vitesse was designed by the legendary Giovanni Michelotti and offered a rare blend of practicality and performance.

By 1969, the model had evolved into the Mk2 version, featuring a more refined 2.0L straight-six engine and upgraded rear suspension, which greatly improved handling and ride comfort. With its distinctive twin headlights, retro angular rear lights, and smooth power delivery, the Vitesse offered something unique in its class.

A great amount of work has been carried out on the car over its years, originally starting with a restoration in the early '90s, and then more recent body restorative work completed in ~2016. Since then, only ~2,000 miles have been covered, making the previous works still really noticeable today. A charming, compact car with Italian design flair, the Vitesse is something a little different.

Today, it remains a desirable and usable classic, loved for its engaging drive, elegant design, and the spirited personality that makes every journey feel special. A characterful and accessible classic with a strong enthusiast following. This example comes from just over ~2 years with our vendor and has a current MOT, even though it is exempt, which is valid until 28.04.2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's a very pretty car and completely different to more modern cars, part of the reason I love it!

The current owner, Mike, is a big fan of cars that are a little more unique than others on the road, he tells us, "For me, one of my favourite features of the Vitesse is its angular Italian design. It really stands out and you just don't see cars like this anymore. The other bonus with this one, is the size of it, being quite compact, it easily fits in the garage with room to spare".

Taking a shine to the Triumph ~2 years ago, Mike says, "It caught my eye mainly as it was mostly already restored and didn't need any extra major work, I knew from prior experience that these types of cars would be quite easy for me to work on and maintain where needed which was ideal".

Mike has faced some recent health issues which will mean less room at home to store the Triumph, with this in mind, the car reluctantly comes to market, he said "I'll be sad to see it go, but its the right thing to do".

Should any additional questions be needed on the car, Mike would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its sharp lines and distinctive front end - the charismatic Vitesse is an eye-catching example of '60s motoring flair.

Wheels and Tyres

The Vitesse is fitted with 13" steel wheels finished with 5-spoke alloy-style hubcaps. The hubcaps look in great condition and we saw very little areas of concerning issue, although weren't able to verify the presentation of the main wheels underneath these.

The wheels are fitted with a set of Goodyear GTZ tyres at the front and Dunlop Street Response to the rear. The condition of tyres looks good overall with no obvious cracking or concerning signs of wear.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Triumph and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

image

Bodywork

Looking over the car, we found no major dings or marks to note. Both doors, bonnet and boot open and close well without concern. There were a couple of notes of age to the bolts on the inside door edges and some early signs of minor corrosion on the underside. We didn't note any really concerning issues here though.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in a classic green tone, the coverage shows well across the car with no noted differences in colour. There were a couple of minor imperfections on the side panels where we noted some signs of paint bubbling and a small mark on the underside of the rear quarter wheel arch edge, although we had to look really closely to spot these areas. Ideally, the car would benefit from a machine polish up to bring out the charm of the Vitesse.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and glass section are in great shape with seals and rubber sections showing well. Lights and lenses present nicely, free of cracks or fading. A particular highlight were the stylish angular rear headlight surrounds, adding some classic flair to the exterior. The interior trim is showing well although the roof trim would benefit from replacing as it's starting to show its age.

The chrome trim is neatly presented and of sound quality, although show some signs of age and pitting to the rear. Nothing that can't be resolved in the future with a little effort. The badge sections are all present and uniform. For the most part, these are wonderfully presented, although the passenger side, rear quarter panel badge is showing its age.

image

Interior

Step inside and you’re greeted by classic British charm - a blend of wood trim, chrome details, and a no-nonsense layout that captures the spirit of open-road motoring.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with brown vinyl, showing overall in good condition across all the seats. There were a few signs of splitting to the material on the drivers seat, although mainly noted on the seat edge and rear bench base. Nothing that can't be fixed with a little attention from the future owner.

Looking over the carpets, the mats showed to be in great condition too. Checking over the boot, all was in good order, with a period relevant carpet and level of presentation as expected given the mileage.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is a simple, straight forward setup showing well for the age of the car. We noticed no major scuffs on the walnut finish just a few notes of age related wear. The top section, finished in black, showed with no major cracks or tears. The dash and instrument cluster are clean and smart, with all the numbers appearing clear and legible. The odometer displayed ~81,622 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appeared to be in lovely condition, with surfaces appearing free from fogging or scratching. Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Triumph's dashboard.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original leather bound, 3-spoke steering wheel shows in a great condition without major wear, in line with the condition of the car. The gear selector showed with minimal issues observed to it or the indicators.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Packing a punchy straight-six engine, the eager, and surprisingly spirited Vitesse, delivers the kind of drive that keeps you grinning from one gear to the next.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the car, we noted no concerns with the engine, and the car idled smoothly. Mike reports that the engine is working well as you would expect. Mike let us know that sometimes when driving, the first gear needs a little nudge to put it into position. Taking the car through the gears on the road, there were no noted issues.

We took the car out with Mike, the current owner, to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about - take a look at the video to see for yourself.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported through the pedal, the stopping power and control felt good, braking in a straight line and in-line with our expectations.

Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

The Triumph delivers a smooth, confident drive, handling the road with ease and composure. It offers a relaxed, comfortable ride with well-balanced control that makes it a pleasure to be in.

Mike tells us more of his experience driving the Vitesse, "It has no artificial aids, so it's all about that on the road experience. Once driving, it responds so well to the skill of the driver".

Gear changes were slick and quiet, steering felt precise although a little heavy given its age, and its road-holding inspires confidence. Our on the road video gives a closer look at how the car performs out on local roads.

image

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in lovely condition. The Triumph has been retro fitted with a Lumenition contactless ignition.

The Vitesse is complete with its original handbook, tailored cover and spare wheel hub caps.

Mike told us everything was in working order, as far as he was aware, although did advise that sometimes the indicators don't self cancel.

History and Paperwork

With body restoration completed in ~2016 and only ~2,000 miles travelled since, this smart, compact and lovely condition Vitesse is ready for its next adventure.

The Triumph was owned through the same family from its original purchase into the early '90s. It had been stored and used sparingly from 1985 to 1990, where it began a full restoration in its earlier years, including a full mechanical overhaul for the gearbox and engine. This was followed by a full restoration of the chassis and structure of the Triumph, with the initial restoration finished off with a respray in 1992.

We cover off the full details of the works carried out over the years, but most noticeably of late, servicing was carried out in April 2025 covering an oil, filter and brake fluid change. The car had more recent restorative work completed in August 2016 preparing and repainting the whole car. The frame was repaired as part of this job, along with new door skins, panel work, welding, wheel arch updates and corrosion repairs.

In June 2016, updates were completed on the handbrake cable guides which required welding and strengthening brackets to be fitted to the Triumph. New hoses, rocker cover gasket and rocker breather were updated in September 2015. Front brake callipers, discs, pads, flexible pipes, clutch master seals and slave cylinders were changed in June 2015. Carburettors were rebuilt and tuned to stop fuel leakages in September 2013. A new heater valve was replaced in August 2012.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
