Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

A delightfully British sports car - the Triumph TR6 is a fine example of what classic motoring is all about.

The Triumph TR6 was originally introduced in 1968, with the first ever production model being built on the 19th of September of that year. Powered by a 2.5L straight six engine and driven by the rear wheels via four speed manual transmission, the TR6 came with either carburetors or fuel injection, as we have on this particular example, making the car capable of ~125bhp and a top speed of ~120mph.

This particular TR6 is a UK car first registered in July 1974, having had six owners prior to James who purchased the car in 1998.

During James’ time with the car he has carried out some minor modifications including: unleaded stage two head conversion; Lumenition electronic ignition; stainless steel exhaust system; Bosch fuel pump; and uprated high torque starter motor along with having the seats professionally re-foamed and bodywork repainted just last year in 2022.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting James the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The iconic British open top sports car look of the TR6 really caught my eye, and I’ve enjoyed every minute spent in the driver's seat.

Just before the millennium James and his then fiancé were in the market for a British sports car, having just finalised their engagement the decision was made to purchase their beloved TR6. The example had recently undergone restoration just a few years prior to their purchase, and the striking colour of the paintwork, originally red but now an eye-catching Magenta, made the decision final.

Having owned the car for the last 25 years, James is really in tune with it and loves everything about the driving experience, be it the engine note of the 2.5L straight six or the connected and responsive drive the car provides. Having enjoyed the last quarter of a century with the TR6 James is now looking to fulfil a childhood dream and move into the coveted world of Porsche ownership.

Exterior

The muscular design of the TR6 is complemented by its wide front grille, striking Magenta paintwork with silver steel wheels, and upturned slash cut exhausts.

Wheels and Tyres

The silver steel wheels are adorned with black and red ‘TR6’ centre caps, with the wheels being in fair condition for the age and being free of any major signs of corrosion or rim damage, the only point of note is that the centre caps could do with repainting as they are suffering from some paint chipping - an easy Sunday job.

The Pirelli tyres are also in good condition considering their age (DOT marked 2003), with plenty of tread left there is no major degradation to be seen on the sidewalls either, and the tyres themselves don’t look to be at all perished. However, with safety in mind it's advisable to get them checked out professionally and replace if necessary.

Bodywork

Having undergone a moderately extensive restoration in the early '90s the bodywork of this particular example looks to be in good condition, with no obviously misaligned panels, or major dents to speak of, however there are some very light dimples in the boot lid which look as though they could be rectified with relative ease by a paintless dent removal specialist.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Just last year in 2022, James had the car in with a local body shop for a full external respray which looks to have been carried out to a good standard and the paintwork is free from any major damage, scratches, or scrapes. The colour is magenta and James tells us that he believes this to be an original Triumph colour.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass across the car is in good condition, with no visible chips, cracks, or scratches to any of the panes, however the passenger side window is loose in its fitting and does not wind up evenly.

The chrome work around the car is beginning to show some pitting and the white vinyl hood on the car is a little worse for wear, with several holes in the plastic windows and some discolouration to the vinyl itself.

During our time with the car James discovered that the frame for the roof did not align properly, we have tried to picture this in our gallery below.

Interior

The dark interior upholstery sits in perfectly contrasting against the wooden dashboard and the brown leather Triumph steering wheel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are original items, having been well maintained over the years as James made the decision to have the seats re-foamed just last year due to the foam starting to sag and lose its comfort. Otherwise the leather is in keeping with the age of the car, with very little in the way of wear to be seen on either of the front seats.

The carpets are in respectable condition too, with TR6 embroidered floor mats protecting the pile underneath.

Dashboard

The wooden dashboard is beginning to show signs of age and would benefit from a light restoration, however there was no visible or major damage that we could see on the day of our visit.

The clocks and gauges set into the dashboard all work as expected too with the exception of the temperature gauge which reads constant cold.

The stereo location has been taped over, and the top dash does have some minor damage present which can be seen in our interior gallery.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Triumph branded steering wheel is finished in dark brown leather and is in fair condition, with some wear and tear visible to the hide. The gearstick is a matching Triumph item, albeit finished in black, with only moderate signs of wear present.

Mechanics

In it's day, the 2.5L straight six engine produces ~120bhp and is capable of reaching a top speed of ~120mph, combined with uprated Spax suspension and improved handling.

Engine and Gearbox

During our ‘Cold Start’ video you can see and hear the engine start from cold. Whilst out on the road the engine drove perfectly and without fault and while the gearbox does have a slight drone, it did not suffer from any grinding or missed shifts.

The engine has undergone a stage two unleaded head conversion, allowing for use with modern fuels and moderately increasing performance, however James tells us the overdrive is non-functioning.

Suspension and Brakes

During our time with the vehicle we could not spot any faults with either suspension or brakes, the Spax suspension improved handling nicely and in line with the rest of the running gear the brakes stopped the car quickly and efficiently and without any untoward noises.

The Drive

The Triumph TR6 is as wonderfully British as even the best of British classics, a sports car by name and by nature. When driving along with the raspy exhaust note filling your ears, the wind whipping by you, and the joy filled faces of onlookers turning to watch as you motor on by, there are few places more relaxing than the passenger seat of a TR6.

Electrics and Other

During our time spent with the vehicle we of course checked the usual electronics, of which there are less than a handful, and found headlights to be working well.

Sadly the fan motor does not work so this will need to be replaced, however given James never drives the car with the hood up, he has not missed the use of fans, and as mentioned above the temperature gauge has a constant reading of cold, so this would need to be looked at also.

History and Paperwork

A classic British sports car, UK built and registered, the condition of this Triumph TR6 is perfect for those looking for a functioning driveable example in need of light restoration.

Included in the paperwork is a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate dated February 2023. The car's history is also backed up by full service history during James' ownership, along with its most recent MOT which expires on 16.02.2024.

Also in the paperwork are images at varying stages of the early '90s restoration, along with invoices for several major works over the period of James’ ownership and beyond, including the most recent exterior respray.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
