Introduction

Glyn Parry
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Iconic, award winning, motorsport legend – people who love cars, love a Dolomite Sprint.

Introduced in 1973 the Dolomite Sprint was an immediate success. As the offering at the top of the already highly successful Michelotti designed Dolomite range the Sprint was intended to take on high performance offerings from the likes of Ford and BMW. To underline its sporting pedigree the Sprint had distinguishing styling embellishments such as sporty alloy wheels and was available in colours from the Triumph sports car range. The real revolution was under the bonnet though – the slant four, SOHC, multivalve engine won a Design Council award and propelled the car to ~118MPH with a 0 to 60 time of ~8.4 seconds. Ever since launch the Dolomite Sprint has commanded huge affection among enthusiasts and can still be seen distinguishing itself in historic motorsport.

Coming to market after ~6 months with our vendor, this potential show winner that's completed fewer than ~800 miles since 2018, it comes with a current MOT valid until 21.03.2026, we believe there are few Dolomite Sprints this good around. The car looks fantastic, runs and drives beautifully and comes with comprehensive history including the original bill of sale, Leyland “Passport to Service”, some delightful personal records kept by the original owner and MOT certificates to help authenticate the mileage before the clock was reset. Following some restoration work around 2009 the car was placed in storage shortly afterwards and then completely restored between 2019 and 2023. The car is now finished in its original, glorious "Pimento Red" over a black interior.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Colin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned a Pimento Red Dolomite in my early 20’s, I knew I had to have another one – this surely has to be one of the best around!

Colin loves cars and really wanted to revisit the Dolomite experience. He tells us “My first Dolomite was an 1850 in exactly this colour. I always wanted a Sprint but couldn't afford one back in the day. I think the Sprint is such a pretty car, it’s very responsive and gear changes are really smooth - it really is a head turner!”.

Having found this beautifully restored example Colin wanted to enjoy the originality and wasn’t out to change anything - he goes on to say “To my knowledge there are no modifications to the original specification, except for the fitting of a complete stainless-steel exhaust system. The only work I've needed to do in my ownership was to fit an upgraded starter motor, as the one that came with the car was a little tired turning over. The new one works Perfectly”.

Having got the nostalgia of Dolomite Sprint ownership out of his system Colin is ready to turn his attention to other things automotive; his project, a Vauxhall Cresta PA. He will be happy to answer any questions about this stunning restored car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Michelotti styling and purposeful stance radiate a true sporting heritage, this is a stunning example.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13-inch alloy wheels, with painted inner sections, wheel nuts and alloy hub covers look in great condition and appear virtually unmarked.

The wheels are shod with Pirelli Cinturato 175/70 R13 tyres all round which also look in great condition with no cracks or bulges that we could see.

Bodywork

This car presents beautifully. It stands straight, shut lines look very good and all four doors, boot and bonnet open and close with precision. Panels appear straight and we could find no obvious sign of damage, distortion or misalignment. The black vinyl roof appears in great condition, and we could see no marks, tears or signs of lifting

We've provided high-resolution images and videos detailing our observations, so please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of the car’s condition.

Paint

The glorious "Pimento Red" paint absolutely gleams, and the car has a deep, even finish all over. The paint finish is consistent, and you’d have to search really hard to find any blemishes or marks. The quality of the respray is remarkable.

Images have been taken from various angles to present the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own view on the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side and rear windows all appear clear and unmarked as do mirrors, lights and lenses. We could find no cracks or significant scratching.

The badging looks superb, and the chrome looks great all round with the exception of a small indentation on the corner of the nearside rear bumper as can be seen on the images.

Interior

Impeccably restored, the quintessentially Triumph interior is a wonderful place to spend time.

Seats and Carpets

The front and rear velour seats present very well with no tears, staining or signs of significant wear that we could identify. The seats are firm and comfortable, and all adjustment mechanisms work as they should.

Likewise, the black carpets, floor mats, door cards, wooden door cappings and remaining interior trim look great. You could easily be viewing this car in a 1970’s showroom!

Dashboard

Undeniably Triumph, the wooden dash still looks fantastic. We could see no evidence of cracking, fading or peeling. Dials and gauges are clear, chrome bezels are in great condition and all switchgear looks good.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three spoke alloy steering wheel presents really well with the black, Triumph embossed, centre in great condition.

The gear lever and handbrake show very minor signs of use and the gaiter, chrome surround and centre console all look in very good shape. Please see the interior gallery for more images.

Mechanics

The world's first truly mass produced multi valve engine - the 1998cc, SOHC unit mated to a TR6 derived gearbox provided the heart of this cars race winning performance.

Engine and Gearbox

With a factory specified ~127BHP, top end of ~118MPH and 0-60 in ~8.4 seconds, the power unit and transmission delivered performance that is great now – and quite remarkable in 1973 when the car was introduced. Consistent with the rest of the car the engine bay on this car is impeccably clean, well-organised and with no signs of leaks or damage. The engine is believed to have been rebuilt by Broadspeed in the past, the airbox wearing a riveted logo plate as pictured.

On our cold start the car fired up instantly and immediately settled down to a steady idle. The Choke light was displaying properly, no warning lights were showing , oil pressure looked good, and emissions appeared clear. Out on the road, the manual gearbox showed no issues, watch the video to see and hear the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The Dolomite Sprint was engineered as a performance car and with rear wheel drive, independent suspension and front disc brakes you can be assured the car offers sporty and engaging handling.

The underside of the car shows both renewal and maintenance of suspension and brake components in the past, view the gallery to see the detail.

The Drive

Colin could have been driving this car from a showroom in 1975 – as well as a fantastic environment to be in this Sprint drove exactly as it should. It pulled well, gears engaged smoothly and reassuringly, overdrive worked on both 3rd and top gear while the car felt firm and planted.

Steering seemed precise with no signs of wander or pulling to either side and there were no untoward knocks, rattle or bumps that we could hear. A truly enjoyable experience. Take a look at the video and see for yourself.

Electrics and Other

Generally speaking, electrics are straightforward on cars of the 70’s and Triumphs of the era are no exception. All switchgear looked in good condition and, with the exception of the period radio, Colin advises everything works exactly as it should.

History and Paperwork

This stunning, restored example of a 70’s icon comes to market from ~6 month ownership, just 5 former keepers, and a calculated mileage of just ~58,800 in its life.

The Dolomite Sprint caused quite a stir when it was launched, and it still does. Stylish, aggressive looks, Triumph heritage and innovative engineering conspire to offer something a bit special. But even among Dolomite Sprints this low mileage example is something exceptional. The restoration has been carried out to very good standard and to a highly original specification. The car is accompanied by a comprehensive MOT history which helps support the mileage and is consistent with a speedometer change in 2009. Documentation also includes original paperwork from the first owner and the cars original bill of sale.

This car is ready to enjoy and although the Sprint is MOT exempt the owner has given it an MOT until March 2026 for extra reassurance.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and have also actioned a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check by HPI that highlights whether the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail – this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to assess the vehicle's condition.

Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time – we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can’t be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car – just like in a traditional auction house.

Hi Colin, can you confirm please. The off side front inner wing near the battery looks to have had a patch plate welded in and heavily seam sealed ? Both strut tops also look to be heavily seam sealed ?

Good Morning
Please may you confirm that the body is the original and a correct sprint body not a 1850 replacement ?

Look under the back seat on the off side for the rear brake balance valve plate, it is Black with 4 studs?

I see that the commission tags are missing from the engine bay and do you have a heritage certificate

Many thanks
Dan
