1996 BMW M3 Evolution (E36)

Premium Classified Sale

Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The Evolution edition of the M3 is one of the highest performance E36 M3 produced.

The E36 generation of the BMW M3 was launched in 1992, promising the premise of a premium coupe with supercar performance. The previous LHD-only E30 generation had laid the groundwork, but the E36 brought along far more comfort and refinement without diluting the appeal. The E36 M3 also offered manageable traction to enhance the balance of power without biting back. Its useability is reinforced by its respectable fuel economy and space for the family. It proved hugely successful, with almost 29,000 M3s produced over its production run. In 1995, the improved Evolution model was launched, now with a new 3.2-litre straight six mated up to a six-speed gearbox. Visually similar to the less powerful version, the Evo model is powered by the S50 B32 engine with variable valve timing (dual-VANOS), an advanced engine management system and lightweight pistons - this placed it as the first BMW production engine to put away over 100bhp per litre. Harnessing that power with upgrades to the suspension and braking system, resulted in the M3 being quicker than a 993 Porsche 911 Carrera.

This very original 1996 car finished in "Metallic Techno Violet" has a grey leather interior, and has had just 3 former keepers. The current owner has had the car for ~18 years and has seen over £6,000 worth of maintenance in the last 5 years. It was last serviced in March 2025 and comes with 13 other instances of servicing. Also included is a 1997 bill of sales, two keys, the owner's wallet and an MOT to November 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Nadeem the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Its discreet styling is complemented by the eye-catching techno-violet finish.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17-inch double-spoke style-24M alloy wheels show light rim scuffs and while they could be improved by a refurb, they're still presentable with a good sheen as pictured. A new BMW centre cap finisher will be needed for the nearside rear alloy.

The tyres are mixed brands; a combination of Goodyear and Avon up front and a pair of Sailun’s on the rear. All but the front offside tyre are over 10 years old and display legal tread.

Bodywork

The exterior has a handful of panel blemishes on both nearside arches and there is corrosion on the nearside rear arch. Overall the body panels are flush to the body, with even shut lines. The aluminium passenger doors open and close with no issues. The car's structure looks positive, with the engine bay, boot floor and wheel wells looking solid. The floor pan is in a good state, with some signs of age in places. Some of the underside plastic liners show scuffs and damage.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The distinctive "Techno Violet" paint is a bit of a favourite among enthusiasts, and has an even hue, and an impressive lustre. It has minor hazing in places consistent with prolonged contact with a car cover. The bonnet and nearside arch have a handful of stone chips but nothing that has penetrated beyond the top coat.

There are also a handful of surface scratches and minor marks on the car, the most noticeable being on the nearside C-pillar and the top of the rear wings where the boot spoiler sits. We also spotted some paint wear above the driver's door well. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

There is mild lamination damage to the bottom of the windscreen, the rest of the glass is in good shape. Both rear-side glass seals show wear. The offside corner of the rear lamp has a minor fracture, but otherwise, the headlamps and lens are positive.

The nearside rear wing side trim is a little loose, but the rest of the body fittings are in good shape and well-mounted.

Interior

Well-kept and very original, the interior retains its enticing appeal.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with the desirable "M Sport Vader" seats, the grey leather are in good shape, with some usual bolster wear and light entry marks on the driver-side seat.

The carpets and mats are all in good condition, with some mild marks noted in the rear footwells. All are bone dry. The boot trim and carpet are smartly presented. The centre armrest shows mild signs of wear.

Dashboard

The dashboard, facia and centre console have lasted very well, with no significant signs of age.

The controls, switches and dials are in good shape but the air-con is not operational. The door cards and headling are in clean condition. The rest of the interior trim holds up well, showing signs of care.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Wrapped in black leather, there is some light wear on the M-Branded steering wheel.

The gear lever is clean and has an illuminated gear lever cap; the only detectable after-market modification we could find.

Mechanics

The M3 is racer raw, this example the all important Evolution with 6 speed manual gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up without any hesitation, idling smoothly with no uneven idling or unwanted noises. The exhaust condensation cleared up, and no unwanted smoke was noted during our visit. The dashboard warning lights all remained off. The engine is presented cleanly with decent hoses and ancillaries. The car has recently had an Inspection 2 service at marque experts Munich Legends.

The gearbox engages gears smoothly with a precise feel. The clutch was replaced in 2021 and operates as it should, but a recent mechanics report has flagged up a low biting point. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen limited use, so the brakes initially had a light sheen of age but work well with no negative feedback, wobbles or squeals.

The suspension appears to be in good order, with no significant thuds or noises heard from the wheels at low speeds. The suspension components show mild signs of age, a mechanics report outlines precautional work needed on the rear suspension but these were not flagged up on the most recent MOT from November 2024.

The Drive

BMW has earned an enviable reputation for producing high-performance, durable, and reliable engines. The M3 Evolution is a prime example of BMW's approach to extracting power from modest-sized engines. It's fitted with the peaky S50 B32 3.2-litre engine which is known for its astonishing broad power band - a particularly impressive feat for a normally aspirated engine.

We took the car for a quick drive on the local estate. There were no untoward noises or vibrations heard from the engine. The steering didn’t make any unwanted noises. The cars felt composed and pulled briskly. The ride is smooth providing a positive control and grip. Nadeem has not reported any issue with the car's oil pressure or engine temperature, it was left to run after the drive with no issues.

Electrics and Other

The sunroof operates without issues. The exterior has been kept to factory spec with no modifications - retaining its original clear indicator lenses and black colour bumper grill mesh. The car also retains its glovebox torch, most of its tools and first aid box. There's a note from the recent service that the air-conditioning is weak, including the fan.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~18 year ownership, the car has had just 3 former keeprers, and a decent record of servicing and mechanical attention.

First registered in March 1996, it comes with a service book with 10 service stamps and a further 4 invoices for servicing. The most recent service was carried out in March 2025 by marque specialists Munich Legends. This was an Inspection II service, and they also provided some commentary on the car, highlighting various advisories in terms of weeping oil etc as detailed.

Invoices from 2021 include £3,500 worth of work and a further £2,800 on parts which include a service, a new clutch and new springs & shocks. Also included is additional work on the brake lines, links and hoses. These were carried out by a trusted specialist who provided video footage of the work summary. Nadeem has retained these videos.

The car also comes with a selection of MOTs to 2012, a 1997 BMW main dealer invoice bill of sales, a selection of handbooks and two keys. It has an MOT until November 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
