Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

With its roots in rally stages, race circuits and a legacy in motoring history, the Sierra Cosworth is a true all-rounder and fast with it.

The Ford Sierra Cosworth Sapphire 4x4 follows on from its motorsport-bred predecessor, retaining much of the same feel albeit with subtly tweaked handling traits of the original. Packaged in a more practical, stiffer, and manageable car, the Sierra Sapphire was rolled out in 1988 with well-weighted steering and an excellent balance of agility and stability.

The Sierra Sapphire makes for a genuinely engaging drive and was designed to win races, with its turbocharged 2.0L 16-valve engine producing around ~280 BHP thanks to its remap work carried out. The powerful engine drives all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission, thanks to its 4x4 capability, the Cosworth has plenty of grip.

The Ford has had several items of mechanical work carried out on it during its current ownership including; new cam belt, new intercooler, new hoses and starter motor. Other upgrades have included new wheels, AP Racing brake kit, boost and a mild tune carried out to the turbo, resulting in its power increase. The Cosworth also has maintenance works with the rear wheel arches being restored and under-seal completed, it comes with current MOT valid until 25.05.2025.

This 1992 example is an exciting opportunity for fast Ford fans to own a great looking Cosworth with some very well suited performance upgrades, and all reversible if the new owner wishes.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Colin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

With a design that is both timeless and eye-catching, this iconic gem keeps its rally heritage alive with its bold, aggressive features, wide stance, and sporty appearance.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 17" Compomotive M05 flat face alloys finished in silver, the wheels show in great condition, with no signs of any concerning damage during our visit.

Colin told us the car came with 18" wheels but he decided to replace them with smaller 17" wheels as he told us the car handles better. The wheel setup also includes a spare in the boot.

The Ford is fitted with Falken Ziex tyres with a spec of 215/40 to the front and rear - these appear to be in good visual condition, with a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

While looking over the Cosworth during our visit, we found that the car maintains good visual panel gaps, and the doors, bonnet, and boot open and close smoothly.

We did not observe any major scratches, dings on the panels, or obvious signs of corrosion. The underside of the Sierra was sealed with a full cavity wax and rustproofing treatment in 2019, costing over ~£850.

Our high-resolution images and videos provide a detailed look at these observations, so please take the time to review all the media files to assess the car's condition for yourselves.

Paint

The lovely silver paintwork has a smooth and even finish across all the panels, overall showing in great condition.

Colin told us he has had some paintwork done between 2021 and 2022 these include the bumpers, front of bonnet and some other areas - you'll notice a slight colour difference on the OSF wing in direct sunlight.

We did note a couple of stone chips to the bonnet and a few marks to the passenger side wing mirror cap. Overall, these observations didn't detract too much from the appearance of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass sections on the Sierra were in great condition overall, consistent with the car's age; we didn't notice any discolouration during our visit. We did note a small stone chip on the front windscreen.

The trim and window seals also looked excellent. The Ford front and rear logos along with the 'Sierra', 'RS' and 'Cosworth' badges on the sides and rear, appeared smart as sections of the badging were replaced in 2020.

The sunroof glass and interior cover slide was in great condition and presented no major concerns.

Both the front and rear lights were in good shape.

Check out the exterior gallery and review video. We guide you through all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

The cabin area is a gateway to the essence of the '90s, where style, technology, and performance blend seamlessly.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather Recaro sport seats have held their shape very well over the years. These show in great condition with no major damage, just the expected creasing to the leather that comes with age. The seat base bolster foams were replaced in 2017.

The main carpet in the interior is in lovely condition, and the carpet in the boot also looks great.

Underneath, the carpet sections showed no issues with the bodywork.

We cover the cabin area of the Cosworth in more detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

The black dash looks to be in great condition, free from any significant marks - it presents really well, with no visible cracking or warping when we visited the car and showed ~93,842 miles on the clock.

All the numbers and dials on the dash appeared clear and legible.

The gauges, switches, and controls all appeared to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Sierra dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black Ford steering wheel is in good condition, with no notes of major damage or wear, just signs of use over its years on the road.

The gear stick is also in good condition, showing only minor signs of use.

Additional images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, are available in our interior gallery section for more details on what the Cosworth has to offer.

Mechanics

Powered by the Cosworth 2.0L engine, the Sierra is capable of a quick 0-60 time thanks to its engine remap with ~280bhp, boasting a well planted and engaging driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine appears to be in great visual condition, and during our start up video, you can see and hear the engine fire up smoothly, with no issues, smoke, or unusual noises. While out on the road, the engine performed flawlessly.

Several upgrades have been actioned on the mechanical aspects of the car over its years including; new guides and stem seals, head, inlet, exhaust and rocker cover gaskets replaced at ~85,047 miles, costing ~£1,800.

The Cosworth is fitted with a Edwards Motorsport 3 inch stainless custom exhaust system, which sounded beautiful on the road.

Take a look at our "On the Road" video, where we cover the engine start-up and take the Sierra around the local area to learn more about the car.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues with the suspension while on the road, and it gave us no concerns regarding its performance or handling.

The brakes felt excellent, having been upgraded with larger callipers and an AP Racing brake kit. These were easily able to bring the Sierra to a stop.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view. We take you through the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer.

The Drive

An extremely enjoyable and fast drive is offered in this Sierra Cosworth. With its precise steering and responsive suspension, the vehicle manoeuvres well through corners, displaying agility that combines both engagement and effortless power.

The combination of a well-balanced chassis and a powerful engine creates a driving experience that's both exhilarating on the open road and remarkably capable in daily use.

Our 'On the Road' video provides an overview of the car and its performance while driving.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in good condition. Colin mentioned that he has no issues with the electrics and everything else is working correctly to his knowledge.

In 2016 the Cosworth had a live remap by NMS, a Mongoose stainless steel exhaust system was fitted, which has now been replaced with the Edwards Motorsport system mentioned earlier. The Ford has also had several smart upgrades such as added boost gauges, upgraded wheels, brakes and new shocks and struts.

The sunroof was working without issue when we visited the Ford.

The Cosworth has a Sony cassette stereo system fitted and in the boot, a spare Compomotive wheel and tyre was also present.

History and Paperwork

With fewer than ~5,000 miles travelled in the last ~5 years, well suited modifications and an advisory free MOT in May this year, this Cosworth is worth a closer look.

The Sierra has had a great amount of time and effort put into keeping it up to speed with more modern counterparts. The upgraded features have been focused on the mechanical side results with the car being remapped to ~280 BHP, Koni shocks and struts installed at the front and back and the front propshaft was reconditioned with new heavy duty universal joints and new locking bolts.

Performance upgrades also include; Compomotive M05 flat face wheels, upgraded to a smaller size to provide better handling. The wheel setup also includes a spare in the boot. New brakes with bigger callipers and big brake kit were also updated and air fuel and boost gauge installed. The Cosworth comes from ~5 years ownership with Colin and has a current MOT valid until 25.05.2025, the car also comes with the private number plate "K40 SSY" included.
