1956 Morris Minor Convertible

Premium Classified Sale

Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A true British icon perfect for summer drives — this Morris Minor is sure to turn heads wherever the road takes you.

The Morris Minor is a British classic that made its debut at the Earls Court Motor Show in London in 1948. This example is a third-series Minor, known as the 1000 series, in the highly desirable convertible body style. A broad range of colours and trim options were available, helping the car remain competitive and enabling production volumes to grow while maintaining a strong share of the small car market.

This “Moggie” is a genuine convertible and not a converted saloon, this is evidenced by the chassis number beginning FCA. All genuine factory convertibles from 1952-58 had chassis numbers prefixed with FCA. It features a dark red soft top with a bright red interior, offering a striking contrast against its black paintwork. It has been lovingly owned and enjoyed for the past ~21 years, with just 3 former keepers registered. The car also benefits from being fitted with a 1,098cc Gold Seal replacement engine sometime in the 80s by a former keeper. The car has also been upgraded with a Ford disc brake kit and remote brake fluid reservoir which makes braking much more efficient and brakes easier to service. Although exempt, the car comes with a current MOT valid until 07.05.2026, and passed the test advisory free.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Tom the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Finished in black, its curvy styling is accentuated by the reflections.

Wheels and Tyres

These 50s-style wheels look great, finished in off white with chrome hub caps featuring the embossed Morris logo. Each wheel is in good condition, showing only minor signs of wear consistent with the car’s age and mileage.

All four tyres are Toyo 310s, dated 2017, and appear to have plenty of tread remaining. Please refer to the exterior photographs and videos for a detailed tour of each wheel.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Morris looks in good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car appearing to align very well. During our visit, we didn't spot any obvious dings or dents around the bodywork. Just a small dent on the nearside wing and a small area of corrosion on the offside door.

We've provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in black, the paint is applied with even coverage and colour across each panel. We observed some very minor wear in the door shuts, and down the door edges and you can see these small defects in the photos and video below.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Morris Minor Convertible looks great and is in line with the mileage. During our visit, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals also look good and align with the overall condition of the car.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in good condition as well. Tom rarely drives the car with the top up, as he drives the car only in dry weather, but you can see in the exterior photos that the convertible top is in great condition with no tears or rips.

Interior

With a blend of practicality and charm, the interior features vibrant red vinyl upholstery.

Seats and Carpets

The red vinyl seats with white piping have held their shape well over the years—testament to the car’s cherished and careful ownership. There is the odd mark to the upholstery, but it does present in smart condition overall.

The same can be said for the door cards and red carpets, which are in similarly good condition. We did notice some wear on the inside of the convertible hood, visible when seated in the car. For a closer look at the cabin, please refer to the extensive photo and video media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in finished in black gloss and presents a main dial in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this Morris Minor shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs, and with no warning lights displayed. The odometer showed a reading of ~10,984 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A traditional Morris steering wheel is fitted. The original steering wheel is in solid condition, but has faded. T black gearstick looks good. For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by the improved and refined 1098cc engine, producing ~48bhp, it’s well-suited to keeping pace with modern traffic.

Engine and Gearbox

The "Gold Seal" 1,098 cc petrol engine from Austin is regarded as a reliable unit. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road, the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Tom reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual gearbox feeding power to the wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the "Moggie" and the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth journey on the sweeping Cornish roads.

The car has been upgraded with a Ford disc brake kit and remote brake fluid reservoir which makes braking much more efficient and brakes easier to service.

During our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a classic saloon car from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too. We'd expect this given the clean MOT, and maintenance work that Tom has had actioned in the past 10 years.

The Drive

With the roof down, this Morris Minor offers an extremely fun and enjoyable driving experience. Tom has particularly enjoyed taking it on sunny weekend road trips around his hometown.

The car started up on the first turn of the key, with no issues to report. Out on the road with Tom, it felt tight and responsive, delivering ample power for comfortable driving. We didn’t notice any unusual noises from the engine or suspension during the drive.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Tom reports that, to his knowledge, all of the electrics are functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

This particular example comes from ~21 years of ownership, is a solid example with a fresh MOT, and benefits from a replacement 1,098 cc Gold Seal engine.

The car is coming out of a ~21 years ownership with Tom. The car has bags of gold-seal 1098cc engine, the Morris Minor has that little bit more oomph to it than the earlier cars, it has also been upgraded with a Ford disc brake kit and remote brake fluid reservoir which makes braking much more efficient and brakes easier to service. The car is a genuine convertible and not a converted saloon. This is evidenced by the chassis number beginning FCA. All genuine factory convertibles from 1952-58 had chassis numbers prefixed with FCA, it featuring a dark red convertible hood. The car is believed to have had 3 former keepers, although this doesn't show on the V5 likely due to when some of the older changes took place with the old style buff log books. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing and parts this Morris Minor has received over its life. Although exempt the car comes with a current MOT valid until 07.05.2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
