Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Designed as an affordable sports car, the Triumph TR4A took Triumph to the next level with their new independent rear suspension.

The 1967 Triumph TR4A was the final evolution of the TR4 series. Thanks to independent rear suspension on most models, it featured improved ride and handling over the dated TR3. Powered by a 2.1-litre engine and styled by Giovanni Michelotti, it combined sharp looks with solid performance. Subtle styling tweaks and enhanced dynamics make the TR4A a popular choice among classic car enthusiasts.

This 1967 example was restored in ~2011, including an engine rebuild, it is ready to be enjoyed just in time for the summer. It's a UK home market car that comes to market from short term ownership, and featured overdrive on the manual gearbox, as well as the desirable "Surrey Top".

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Looking like it’s dressed for a garden party but secretly dreams of winning a road rally!

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with new wire wheels, they are finished in silver and present very well. There are a matching set of tyres on them, which have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The TR4A’s bodywork is in very good condition. There was a restoration carried out in ~2011 by a previous keeper, and the car did receive new front and rear wings. The panel gaps are equal, and the removable Surrey Top roof is in good condition.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "New White", the paintwork presents well, with very few blemishes noted. The paintwork on the blue Surrey Top roof also presents well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The chrome work has all been re-plated as part of the restoration and presents very well with a bright finish. All of the lights are in good condition with no damage to the lenses at the front or rear. All of the windows are in good order for their age; there are a few minor age-related scratches, but nothing excessive.

A brand new blue vinyl roof is supplied with the car, including the frame, which has never been fitted by John.

Interior

It’s a British classic, so everything in here is here for a reason.

Seats and Carpets

As standard, the TR4A comes with vinyl seats. These are in good order with just some minor age-related creasing and stretching on the base and a small split on the driver’s seat.

The carpets are clean and tidy, with no signs of excessive wear. Inside the boot, the spare wheel is in place along with a removable luggage rack ready to mount on the boot. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard has a lovely period wooden fascia. There are a couple of minor cracks to the lacquer, but these are minimal for the age. The instruments have a nice bright finish to the bezels and are working, with the odometer showing ~64,460 miles. The glass on some of the dials looks like it could do with a clean.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a classic Moto-Lita steering wheel, this is in good condition with no real signs of age. The wooden Triumph gear knob is also in good order with minimal wear.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A rebuilt 2.1-litre four-cylinder engine is enough to provide an enjoyable ride in the TR4A.

Engine and Gearbox

The original 2.1-litre engine has been rebuilt so the car is now able to run on unleaded fuel. Since the rebuild, it has been fitted with a stainless steel exhaust and it runs with no issues reported.

The four-speed gearbox has a smooth change and the car pulls well through the range; for added economy, with the flick of a lever, the overdrive kicks in and works as you would expect.

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the car, the ride is firm without being harsh, just as you would expect from a British classic. The TR4A handles nicely with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the car. Stopping the car is easily done, and the car comes to a stop in a straight line.

The Drive

Driving the 1967 Triumph TR4A is a classic British motoring experience. With its lively 2.1-litre engine, improved ride from independent rear suspension, and engaging, unassisted steering, it’s raw, rewarding, and full of classic charm.

Electrics and Other

The car's switchgear appears to be the original, with a light amount of patina, but it is all said to be working correctly. One addition is a period-style head unit that is Bluetooth compatible.

History and Paperwork

A restored example from ~2011, this UK home market RHD presents in beautiful condition, has desirable options like Overdrive and Surrey Top, comes to market from short term ownership and is ready for a new owner to enjoy this Summer.

Registered on 7th April 1967, the Triumph TR4A has undergone a restoration by a previous keeper in 2011; there has also been an engine rebuild. The invoices date back several years and show various parts purchased.

The TR4A is a great usable British classic which will be perfect for anyone looking to expand their collection, or ideal if you are just starting your journey into British classics.
