Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

A true British icon - a powerful engine, crisp handling and a unique charming style.

Way before the 1960s British Music invasion of the US, the British motor industry had already created a demand for energetic and emotional pleasure. American soldiers were given a taste of affordable and fun open-top sports cars when stationed in the UK, and once they returned home, helped to create a demand that did much to support the British economy during the post-war years. With much of the UK's output being exported, the likes of the Austin-Healey made a huge impression on the perception of what a sports car should look and sound like. The Austin Healey created a legacy to become one of the finest open-top sports cars ever to be produced in the UK. Starting life in 1956, the Austin Healey 100/6 was an evolution of the original. Never losing its character and appeal, it was known as the Big Healey, due to its impressive power and imposing presence. The 6-cylinder car was a natural on the racetrack and was the first Big Healey to offer rear seats as an option. Designated the BN4, the styling became more streamlined and now featured a fixed windscreen. Powered by a tuned 2.6-litre C-Series engine, the 100/6 offered the motorist an affordable machine that could reach 100 mph and beyond.

This 1958 Abingdon-built home market RHD car was first registered in May 1958 and is finished in "Colorado Red / Old English White", with a red leather interior. It comes from around ~1.5 years with our vendor and an impressive history file with a background of several long-term owners. It has seen a partial body renovation carried out ~11 years ago and is believed to be one of just ~100 Dunlop 4-disc brake models, additionally, the car retains early Abingdon features, including the Morris green engine,
cigarette lighter, lockable door handle and transparent cones on the rear reflectors.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I saw the car listed on this site, and couldn't resist taking her home, I've got something of a penchant for Big Healey's!

David is a collector of British sports cars, with a particular fondness for rally legends due to his involvement in classic rally sport. Having bought this car from us early in 2024, he has successfully sorted out a few issues and cleaned the car up.

Priorities for David have changed somewhat, and so he has decided to let the Big Healey go having just sold another with us last month, looking to thin down his collection. David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Muscular and purposeful, the Big Healey offers a genuine slice of open-top heroics.

Wheels and Tyres

The satin finish wire wheels are in acceptable condition, with some signs of age. The spoke are generally in good shape, the finish in places shows age as pictured.

The car is fitted with three Continental tyres from 2015 and an older Maxxis. All are in good shape with even tread.

image

Bodywork

The exterior panel fit is acceptable for a car of this age, and all doors open and close freely. Some of the panels show emerging corrosion, mainly on the wing seams, and boot lid and there is a light mark on the nearside rear wing. Some of the lower extremities of the exterior panels, such as the rear and front valances, doors and sills show their age too as pictured.

The front cross member, floor pan, chassis and front wheel wells have a coating of surface rust but appear to be solid. The rear wheel wells and back section of the car have been renovated in the hands of a previous owner, confirmed by photo documentation. The engine bay and boot floor seem to be in good shape. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The "Colorado Red and Old English White" paint is reasonably consistent in colour. The finish has lost its lustre in some areas, with chips and age-related wear also spotted but retains a level of shine considering its age. Since buying, David has made a credible attempt to clean up the exterior presentation.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is in good shape, with the passenger door sliding windows in line with the age of the car. The headlamp glass is decent. The rear offside reflector lens shows its age. The door and windscreen seals look good. The hardtop rear glass and boot seal are worn but do not appear to be allowing water ingress.

The chrome work appears to be correct for the model year; some of it has light pitting and some corrosion on elements, but generally presents well. The rear bumpers have some minor dents, and it looks like as pictured the front could be adjusted slightly to sit evenly.

image

Interior

Complete and original, the interior is a blend of simplicity and functionality.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats, while able to support their occupants, show their ~67 years of use, but all things considered look like they would respond positively to a renovation. The passenger seat has a few repairs. This BN4 has rear seats fitted as part of its original specification and would benefit from the same attention.

The carpets are complete with some signs of fraying. A deep clean will offer dividends to their presentation. All are free of dampness. David has supplied a new set of carpets for the car.

image

Dashboard

The top of the dashboard and white padded facia look good, free of significant damage. Age has caught up with most of the controls but don't distract too much and all are said to work. The dials are in good shape, with minor bezel wear and all are legible.

The driver's side door card shows wear but is free of rips. The hardtop headlining is free of damage and the rear trim appears to be complete.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

It is fitted with a Bluemel's adjustable column, which was demonstrated to retract. The steering wheel is well-used and the gear lever has aged in line with the interior.

image

Mechanics

Known for its robust engines and engaging driving experience, the Big Healey is a natural-born cruiser.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts readily with the choke engaged, idling smoothly and free of rattles or knocks. There were no dashboard warning lights on, and the exhaust remained smoke-free as the car got up to temperature. The engine presentation shows evidence of maintenance, while metal components have a sheen of age, the hoses and ancillaries look good. There were no fluid leaks from the car on the day. The fuel pump was replaced in 2021, the distributor was rebuilt in 2018 and the stainless steel exhaust was fitted in 2017.

The gearbox operates without any reported issues, it has a functional overdrive which was demonstrated to work. David is happy with the performance and feel of the clutch.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension absorbed the road without any significant problems, the car felt balanced and even at the low speed of our road test, it provided a decent if firm ride quality. The rear springs were replaced in 2021.

The BN4 is fitted with all-round disc brakes, which considering the power potential of the big Healey is a distinctive positive. David will include the original fitment Dunlop front calipers with the car. It brakes without any drama, remaining true with no wobbles or vibrations on the day.

image

The Drive

The big Healey is all about torque and power. The straight-six burble in harmony with the twin carbs and stainless steel exhaust, provides a true measure of its raw appeal.

The car accelerates smoothly with no undulations from the engine. We kept the speeds to around 40 mph so the engine remained relatively quiet. A brief opportunity to accelerate to bring the revs above 3,000 rpm did reveal that infectious engine bellow. It cruised sweetly and the steering remained free of vibrations as it tracked down the road. The car starts up readily when warm, and ticks over without any exhaust fumes.

image

Electrics and Other

The hardtop is solid with some wear noted on the gutters. Removing and replacing it didn’t pose any issues, and it fits snugly on the body.

History and Paperwork

A genuine UK home market BN4, this car comes to market from ~1.5 year ownership, an impressive file of invoices is supported by a partial body renovation in 2014.

First registered in May 1958, the car is verified as a UK home market model with a 2.6-litre straight-six and overdrive gearbox. An old V5 traces the Healey back to its previous keeper back to 2003, having bought it from another long-term owner 14 years before then. The car was sold on Trade Classics to its current owner David in early 2024.

There is a large file full of historical invoices, which included work on the brakes, clutch, electrics and engine maintenance. Work on the rear, floor and sills of the car was carried out in 2014 at the cost of £2,400 + £300 worth of parts. Further work was carried out on the cross-members and floor pan in 2016.

It comes with a healthy number of previous MOTs back to 1980, an original owner's book, a heritage certificate and photos of the 2014 body renovation. Its most recent MOT was issued in 2019 and a service was carried out in 2022, less than 250 miles ago.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
