Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Six-cylinders and ~117BHP from a four-seater roadster was an excellent choice for those wanting a sporty car for all the family.

Launched in 1956, the Austin-Healey 100/6 BN4 was a four-seater roadster designed and built by Donald Healey. The idea was to produce an excellent handling, fast sports car rivalling cars from Jaguar and MG, but at a price that more drivers could afford. Just one year later, the 2.6 litre straight-six was improved by adding another 16bhp by altering the inlet manifold, fitting larger valves and increasing the compression ratio. The result on the road was an impressive increase in the midrange power at around 50mph, perfect for the B roads.

This lovely example comes to the market after spending most of its life in the USA, and has been in the current ownership in the UK for the past ~3 years, although the vendor owned the car in America prior to this also. Coming from America, as you will know, means less corrosion, making this 1958 example an excellent choice for anyone looking to step into British classic car ownership.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Ben the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Coming from Florida has paid dividends to the condition of the Austin-Healey 100/6.

This 1958 Austin-Healey 100/6 BN4 has been owned by the vendor for several years. The car is an American Austin-Healey, which has spent most of its life residing in the sunny climate of Florida. It was brought over to the UK by the vendor in 2019 and sold to his friend, who used it lightly for several months before selling it back to our vendor in 2020.

The car has been enjoyed as part of a collection of classics, the Austin-Healey is being offered for sale. Ben will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Ice Blue Metallic over Ivory White is a fantastic and popular choice to show off the lines of the Austin-Healey.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are in good condition; they have been repainted in silver and present well. The knockoffs have a small amount of age-related tarnishing. There is a matching set of Kelly tyres, which have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Austin Healey looks to be in good condition. There are no dings or dents to be seen, and the panel gaps align pretty well. The driver's door does slightly catch at the top, but this may be able to be adjusted.

The removable roof fits, along with the sliding side windows, which sit inside the aluminium frames. There is also a full tonneau cover which again fits tightly.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Ice Blue Metallic" over "Ivory White", the car is believed to have been repainted in the States in the early 2000s, but the colour of the paint is not known as a previous keeper carried this out. Nevertheless, the condition is very good, and the car presents very well, as you can see. There is the odd mark here and there, but these are few and far between.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look in good condition. The windscreen has no apparent scratches, and the sliding door windows are in good order with no signs of heavy use. The plastic rear window is in good order with no discolouration or damage.

The brightwork on the car is all in excellent condition; there is a small amount of age-related tarnishing, but this is very minimal. Headlights, spotlights and rear lights are all in good order with no splits or cracks to the lenses.

Interior

Life was much simpler in the 50s - comfortable seats, analogue instruments and a big steering wheel made for some enjoyable trips.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the 100/6 are in very good condition, with no damage to see in the front or rear of the car. The door panels are finished in the same material and are also in good order.

There has been a new carpet set fitted, and this has given the inside a new lease of life to the already tidy interior. Inside the boot the spare wheel is in place, which looks in good order. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dash has no splits or damage to the top section. The instruments are said to be working correctly, with the oil pressure showing a healthy reading when running, and the odometer is currently reading ~70,174 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke steering wheel in the Austin Healey is believed to be the original; there is some wear to this in keeping with the age of the vehicle. The gear knob is also thought to be original, and you can clearly see the numbers for the shift pattern.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

There's just something about the straight-six sound that will leave you mesmerised.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.6 litre engine fires up just as it should and idles smoothly. No untoward noises are coming from the engine bay, and everything appears to be in good order, with no leaks spotted during our visit, a very tidy engine bay.

The gearbox has a smooth change, and there is overdrive fitted, which is operated via a dash-mounted switch. Watch the "On The Road" video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Austin Healey handles the road brilliantly, just like you would expect from a sports car. No knocks or bangs are coming from the suspension, and Ben reports the car to stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Out on the road is fun in the 100/6. Firstly, the sound of the straight-six is just perfect! Secondly, the low-slung style of the car ensures it handles the twisty bits with ease and gives precision feedback through the steering wheel, and it looks fantastic, turning heads wherever it goes.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should. However, the switchgear does have a small amount of age-related wear. Under the dashboard, there is a headunit fitted with two speakers mounted in the sides of the footwell.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Restored in the States in the early 2000s - this LHD Austin Healey is sure to be around for a good number of years more based on the lovely condition.

Unfortunately, the car has no paperwork except the V5, which shows one previous keeper (the vendor's friend). Ben reports the car was given a thorough inspection and a full service when it came to the UK and then another service when the car was purchased back.

This means we can only go on the vehicle's condition, which doesn’t disappoint. The underside and outside are all well presented, and it all appears to be in good order mechanically, with no issues reported or spotted on our test drive.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
