Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

One of the most iconic cars brought to us by British manufacturers Morgan, the Plus 8 is an engineering masterpiece.

The Plus 8 was produced by Morgan for 36 years between 1968 and 2004 and was reborn from 2012 to 2018. Among enthusiasts, the +8 is deeply associated with Peter Morgan, the owner-chairman behind its design. Installing a meaty V8 engine in the front of a traditional Morgan roadster was an ingenious idea that worked well for Morgan. They created Britain's fastest accelerating production car for a time, and this creation proved so endearing it remained on sale with very few alterations for 36 years.

This 1992 Morgan Plus 8 has been with our vendor Colin for the past 11 years and has been cherished, as you can see from the condition of the two-seater Roadster. 3.9 litres of V8 power is what nestles beneath the bonnet of this lightweight vehicle, and it's a smart example finished in a classy colourway.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Colin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had always loved the look of a Morgan, when this one came up for sale, it was the right colour and spec so I just had to have it.

Colin, a retired airline pilot, has been the owner of this incredible Morgan Plus 8 for the past 11 years. The car is actually painted Rolls Royce Velvet Green, which looks black in most light, in 2001 by Melvyn Rutter Limited - Morgan main dealers.

Although the car is much loved, it has been used less and less each year which is the reason for the sale of this beautiful classic. Please feel free to ask Colin any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Rolls Royce Velvet Green is the perfect colour to set off the classic lines of the Morgan.

Wheels and Tyres

The Morgan Motor Company wheels are in excellent condition with just a few small marks here and there, which could be easily touched in if desired. The tyres are matching Goodyear, which have only covered a few hundred miles.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The Morgan presents really well, and there are no dings or dents to mention on the bodywork of this 1992 Plus 8. The doors look to align as they should and open and close nicely. The bonnet also aligns as intended, opening up from either side, allowing access to the V8.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

As mentioned, the Mogan was repainted in 2001 in Rolls Royce Velvet Green. The car was entirely stripped down for this to be carried out, ensuring an excellent job, and photographs can be seen in the documents section. There are some light stone chips to the front, as you would expect for the length of time it has been repainted, but other than that, the car looks to be in good order.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this stunning 1992 Morgan Plus 8 at its absolute best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The wet weather gear is fully removable. The plastic windows to the roof are also free from any excessive scratches. The roof itself is in good condition with no damage to mention, and there is also a full double duck tonneau cover should you get caught without the roof. The car also has the optional folding windscreen and additional "eyebrow" screens to compliment as pictured.

The headlights and indicators are in good condition with no cracks or splits to the lenses, and the same can be said for the rear lenses. Please see our detailed gallery showing the whole exterior.

Interior

Brown leather and a walnut dashboard fascia, perfectly suited to the smart exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The brown leather seats are in good order. There is some very light wear to the driver’s bolster, which is to be expected and often seen, but it is less than the mileage and age would suggest.

The carpets and door cards are in great condition throughout the car. Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks to be in excellent condition, and there is no crazing to the lacquered finish of the walnut. The instruments are bright and clear and are reported to be working as they should. The odometer shows a reading of ~45,043 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Moto-Lita steering wheel is wrapped in leather and finished with the Morgan logo in the centre, and there is minimal wear to the rim. The gearknob is also in good order, with the shift pattern showing to the top.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Fitted with Rover’s 3.9 litre V8, there is ~204BHP on tap in a car which weighs in at just 851kg - ample power to say the least.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine choice in the Morgan Plus 8 is the tried and tested 3.9 litre V8 from Rover. This engine has the more modern fuel injection system ensuring as much power as possible is squeezed from the V8 whilst offering an acceptable return on the MPG. Itfired up straight away, as seen in our On The Road video, and sounds fantastic as you would expect from a V8. There are no untoward noises to be heard coming from the car whilst idling or driving.

Out in the car, the gear change is smooth and precise, and the car pulls well through the 5-speed gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The Morgan has had new leaf springs at approximately ~29,000 miles. As a result, the car has a firm feel to it out on the road as you would expect, thanks to the Spax dampers. There are no noises to come from either corner of the suspension.

Colin reports the brakes are working as they should, pulling the car to a halt in a straight line, and no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

It turns heads, sounds fantastic, and is a joy to be in! This is one car which will not fail to give you the grin factor. 3.9 litre V8 is all that needs to be said, and you will know for yourself just how much fun this will be.

Electrics and Other

Inside, the switch gear is all reported to be working as it should with little or no wear to the buttons. There is a stereo fitted under the dash, which does work. The speakers are fitted on either side of the seats in the quarter section. Colin did mention that sometimes the passenger side speaker does go off. Also, he keeps the car on a trickle charger to ensure the battery is always good to go.

History and Paperwork

There is an excellent history file with the Morgan, including photographs from the complete strip down and repaint of the car into Rolls Royce Velvet Green.

It is clear to see that the car has been well cared for, looking through the paperwork file included with the Morgan. There are several old MOT certificates, plus previous invoices for work carried out and parts fitted over the years, one of which is the respray invoice at ~£4,000.

We think the car does not need anything and is ready for the new keeper to jump in and enjoy it just as much as Colin has over the past 11 years, take a look through all the content to see if you agree. The car does have a private registration, which is included with the sale of this British Classic.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Colin, Your car looks like a pre cat version. Can you confirm as 1992 would have been quite late not to have cats fitted.
Thanks
Mike

To:- Colin D, I can see that two of my questions are answered by the details connected to Trade Classics.
The only one not answered is whether it has ever had any kind of bump.
Hoping for a reply, Redgards, Philip

I suppose you are looking for the best bid, but can ask you please if there is a reserve or figure that you absolutely will not let the car go below that figure.anticipating your reply.
I understand this may be a difficult one because the car is quite old but in pretty good condition.
Finally have you had any issues concerning (a) reliability (b) recurring niggly problems. Thank you, anticipating your reply.

Hello Colin D, please could you tell me how many Owner’s your car has had (1). (2) has the car ever been involved in an accident.
(3) Does the car have supporting history as evidenced by a file containing the necessary paperwork? Yours, Philip
