Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

The Peugeot 205 GTi is a true blue collar hero – one of the real stars of the 80's and 90's hot hatch scene.

The Peugeot 205 GTI, a name that resonates with car enthusiasts and evokes memories of a golden era in hot hatchbacks. It’s a car that, for many, defined the 1980's and early 1990's, blending performance with everyday usability. This well-crafted and stylish car boasts curvaceous lines and balanced proportions. The 205 marked a departure from the conservative design approach of Peugeot's earlier small cars, embracing a bold new design that remained iconic until the introduction of the 206 in 1998.

This particular 205 GTi comes to market from ~20 year family ownership. It started life as a 205 GTi 1.9, and was fitted with the full Dimma bodykit, including Dimma stamped 16" custom split-rims. It had a "Turbo Technics" kit installed on the original block which as was often the case, proved a bit too much power for the standard set-up. Since then, in the current ownership, the engine has been swapped out for a 1.9L Mi16, the car converted to fuel injection, and matching LSD fitted too. It presents well considering it's ~33 years of age, and has had the interior re-upholstered in current ownership too.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Roy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I always loved Peugeot's, when I first saw this 205, I knew I had to buy it and take it home!

Roy, the current owner, first set his eyes on the GTi in 2001 where his uncle offered him a deal to trade in a Jaguar for the 1.9 GTi Dimma. Being a fan of Peugeot's, the 205 has been the perfect car for Roy, "What I love about the car is that it looks stunning, it's a real head turner. She's got the looks and the grunt under the bonnet and always draws a large crowd at a classic car show".

He goes on to tell us "I have loved the car, but I am selling as I'm now 65 years old and I think it's time for a younger person to own the 205. The car has been in our family for over ~20 years". Roy will be available to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

This legendary hot hatch isn't just a car; it's a time machine to an era of adrenaline fuelled driving and box arch boy racer design.

Wheels and Tyres

The 205 GTi comes with 16" 3-piece split-rims on each corner which are a custom spec as part of the Dimma bodykit work, stamped Dimma as pictured.

The front wheels have 195/45 Ventus K102 tyres, date coded from 2003, while the rears are fitted with a mix of 205/45 Goodyear Eagle F1 and Sailwin Sportway tyres. All appear to be in good condition, although it would be advisable to consider changing these in the near future given their age.

We didn't observe any major signs of damage to the wheels, although there are some signs of age noted on the wheel edges. For a more detailed view of the 205's exterior and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

The 205 GTi maintains well-aligned panel gaps. Both doors, the sunroof, bonnet, and the boot open and close smoothly when we visited the car. The Dimma bodykit styling with its broadened arches and bumpers, is a rare example of this type of bodykit and really emphasises the 90's look of the car.

During our visit, we didn't note any major dings on any of the panels, and the bodywork looked good overall. We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in an attractive grey tone the paint showed well across the panels, with even colour and finish. Paint coverage is consistent and presented no major concerns. We noticed some light stone chip marks across the bodywork in various positions across the panelling. However, these areas didn't present a major concern overall, and the car shows well given it's mileage covered.

Again, we have taken high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from various angles to provide a comprehensive view of the car. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass sections on the 205 GTi appeared to be in good condition, including the windscreen, sunroof, side windows, and mirrors. The front and rear lights also looked well-maintained. We didn't observe any cracks, chips, or scratches during our visit.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

Retro charm meets sporty sophistication where every curve, stitch, and detail reminds you of its racing heritage.

Seats and Carpets

The Peugeot features seats finished in comfortable split-tone red and black leather, which showed in a nice condition. There were some marks on the driver's seat and bolster section with some age related creasing noted, although nothing overly concerning. The passenger seats and rear seats showed in a good condition wearing their age well. These seats were re-upholstered in the current ownership.

The car is fitted with red and black carpeted floor mats with some signs of wear and minor fading. The roof lining looked good, although a few marks were noted. Inside the boot, the presentation is showing its age and would benefit from a clean up.

There were slight marks noted on the door trims, but overall, the interior had no major concerns. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The black dashboard and trim areas appears to be in great condition, with no concerning signs of wear noted. The odometer displayed ~96,403 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all looked to be in order where surfaces appeared clear, with no fogging or scratching. The dash display dials and digital elements functioned well, and everything seemed to work as it should. Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the 205's dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A black and metal inset three-spoke MOMO branded steering wheel was present, showing a good finish. We didn't note any signs of excessive wear or concerns here.

The gearstick had no issues that we noted, with minor age related signs of usage. The gearstick is finished with an aftermarket surround and handle.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Upgraded to the Mi16 engine, taking this hatchback up to ~160BHP, delivering around 50% more power than earlier cars.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns with the engine, and the car idled smoothly. We did note a couple of warning lights on the dash board when starting up initially.

The Mi16 tuned engine performed without issue when out on the road and has been fitted with a limited slip gearbox to match with the engine. The engine bay showed no major concerns that we observed although may benefit from some restorative work to bring it back to its former glory. The larger styled exhaust at the rear of the car showed well and sounded great.

We took the car out on some local roads with the current owner, Roy, to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we went through the motions, shifting through the gearbox, and seeing how the car performs. Watch the video to see for yourself.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The brakes felt great, with no noticeable vibrations during the journey, allowing the car to come to a firm stop.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

This Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Dimma Mi16 combines precision and power. With its legendary handling prowess, every twist and turn of the road makes each drive an unforgettable experience.

The 205 is a car that ignites passion for driving with an iconic blend of French finesse and adrenaline-pumping agility.

Electrics and Other

The car has been upgraded over its life to include a complete power steering rack, an electric windows kit as well as a central locking door locking kit.

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in good condition. Roy mentioned that he's had no issues with the other electrical elements of the car and believes that everything should be working correctly to the best of his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Starting life as a 205 GTi 1.9, it comes to market from ~20 year family ownership and this car has been upgraded over time with full Dimma kit including the Dimma wheels, and a Mi16 engine.

The Peugeot comes to market with ~96,403 miles on the clock having been on the road for ~33 years. When the car was first purchased, the car's engine with the Technics turbo that was fitted at the time, was unfortunately found to be damaged. However, following the initial inspection works, the current owner Roy contacted a Peugeot car dealership to track down a donor engine.

The Peugeot is in lovely overall condition, and has been stored in a dry environment through its life having been owned by the same family for the last ~20 years. The 205 has benefitted from care and attention over its ownership and has been upgraded with a power steering rack, an electric windows kit plus a central locking door lock kit. A limited slip gearbox to match the Mi16 engine has also been installed from a Peugeot parts specialist.

The dealership had a 1989 Peugeot 1.9 Mi16 with a complete engine and mileage of ~78,000. Travelling to Sheffield to inspect the donor car was a success, and Roy purchased the engine also installing an updated fuel injection system.

In 2003, the 205 was upgraded with a complete power steering rack, electric windows kit plus a central locking door lock kit. At the same time, a limited slip gearbox to match the Mi16 engine, was purchased and installed from a Peugeot parts specialist.

For a comprehensive look at the car's history and maintenance, please refer to the history and paperwork media, which includes previous MOT reports and service receipts.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Should any questions be required, Roy would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Roy.
was the Dimma Kit fitted by Dimma as I don’t see the Dimma certification plate under the bonnet?
If not who fitted the kit please and do we have the receipt for it?

Thank you

Key Bidding Facts

What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
