Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet offers one of the best and most affordable modern classic summer driving experiences.

First released in 1982 the Porsche 944 was based on the 924, but featuring considerably more striking contours as well as a redesigned front bumper with lower spoiler and wider, more angular wings.

Porsche then introduced the S2 in 1989, bringing along with it a 3.0L naturally aspirated inline four engine that broke records for being the largest 4 cylinder engine of its time. With an increased power output of ~208bhp the S2 was quoted to be a 150mph car when spec'd with the manual gearbox, like we have on this example, making it substantially quicker and more capable than previous iterations of the 944.

All of this combined with the typically low Porsche driving position and driver centric dashboard design, means that the Porsche 944 S2 offers a very engaging and interactive experience for the driver.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Renan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the visceral experience the car provides, the mechanics of the vehicle working together in perfect synchronicity to deliver exactly what you expect from a modern sports classic.

Renan originally purchased this car in August last year, having always wanted to own an '80s / '90s Porsche - the 944 S2 was the ideal candidate to scratch the itch.

Although not having owned the S2 for very long, Renan has made sure to keep up with servicing and maintenance, including a major service in April 2022 during which the spark plugs, belts, brakes, jubilee connections, oil, and filters were all changed.

During his ownership Renan has enjoyed the car thoroughly and this is evident in the way he talks about the vehicle, however an upcoming relocation to Germany sees him having to part ways with the car and whilst he would love to be able to take the car back to its country of inception, this sadly isn't feasible for him at this time, and as such he wants to find his 944 a loving new home.

Exterior

With its elegant body lines, Cup 1 wheels, and cabriolet top, the 944 S2 is a great looking modern classic perfect for summer motoring.

Wheels and Tyres

The Cup 1 wheels fitted to the car appear to be in good condition with no evident cracks, buckles, or spots of corrosion. The silver painted finish is in good condition too with no signs of flaking or curb damage to the rims either.

The tyres don’t appear to be in too bad of a condition, they are quite old with some DOT codes showing as long ago as 2006, so this is something the new owner may want to attend to. However the tyres themselves don’t appear to be suffering from any damage or age related issues such as cracking or degrading side walls.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the whole is in good condition, for the most part the car presents very well with no misaligned panels or any obvious signs of previous repair.

However the lower sills are beginning to bubble a little and show signs of degradation towards the front of the car, and whilst it has passed its most recent MOT this is something the future owner will need to consider. Renan saw this coming and had every intention of doing this himself however given his upcoming relocation he can no longer do so, and as such will be selling the car along with all the required body sections to repair the above issues.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The black paintwork is in a really nice condition, with the exception of the aforementioned sill areas there isn’t any sign of mismatched colours between panels, lacquer peeling, or any of the usual issues typically found on paint of this age. There is one very minor scratch on the boot lid as can be seen in our images, however this is only very faint and does not take away from the overall appearance of the vehicle.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

On the whole the glass on the car is in good condition, however the windscreen does want to be replaced at some point as there is what appears to be a cracked lower corner on the drivers side, along with a fairly hefty stone chip on the passenger side of the glass.

Other than that the rest of the windows appear to be in great condition and there are no missing or damaged trim pieces so far as we could see.

Interior

Taking interior design cues from the 924, the 944 S2 features comfortable leather upholstery with a simplistic yet stylish dashboard design, and a wonderfully low and engaging driving position.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in admirable condition for the mileage of the car and whilst the drivers seat bolster does have some reasonably heavy wear, we think this is to be expected from a vehicle that has travelled ~150,000 miles. The rest of the leather however is in good condition and doesn’t let the car down at all.

The carpets tell a similar story with general signs of wear but nothing major, the pile is still nice and the mats appear to be in good condition too.

Dashboard

The two tone dashboard provides a nice sense of duality to the interior, with the black top half and cream lower section that blends nicely into the carpeted footwells. The dashboard itself is in good condition, showing no real signs of wear and actually keeping its condition rather well over the years. There are no scratches, cracks, or other such damage evident anywhere on the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is not the original factory item as it has been replaced with the Club Sport steering wheel which we are told is an actual Porsche item. Nevertheless we think it fits well with the rest of the interior and is in great condition too.

The gear stick is in similar condition, showing minimal signs of wear for its age there is no signs of damage to the leather or top insert.

Mechanics

Powered by a 3.0L in-line four cylinder engine producing ~208bhp, the Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet provides a fun and engaging driving experience for both driver and passenger.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.0L engine produces ~208bhp, providing plenty of power for day to day driving as well as B-road blasts. Having been serviced in April of this year the engine is running just as expected and during our ‘On The Road’ video you can see the engine start from cold with no hesitation where it then settles into a comfortable idle.

Likewise with the gearbox, Renan reports no issues with the gearbox during his ownership and that the gearbox performs without fault.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension of the 944 S2 is a very capable set up, handling daily driving with moderate comfort and also providing progressive road handling for faster drives. During our time with the vehicle we noticed no untoward knocks or noises from the suspension and noted that the ride was very comfortable without being crashy or stiff over rougher roads.

At the start of the year Renan had new front discs and pads fitted, along with a brake fluid change in April as part of its major service and as a result of this the car stops quickly and efficiently with great pedal feel, leaving no doubt as to the condition of the brakes.

The Drive

As can be expected from a car of this calibre, the Porsche 944 S2 provides a very fun and engaging experience for both driver and passenger. From the naturally aspirated 3.0L power plant, to the cabriolet roof, the S2 provides the perfect combination of sports car performance and leisurely summer driving experience.

On the day of our visit Renan took us for a drive and Alan reports that from the passenger seat the car drove very nicely, there were no knocks heard from the suspension and the car in general felt taught.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we tested the electronic systems and found everything working fully and as expected, including the pop up headlights which can be seen to be working in our exterior gallery below.

The vehicle has been fitted with an aftermarket stereo which is also fully functioning, along with the power cabriolet roof which can be seen working during our ‘On The Road’ video.

History and Paperwork

This Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is a well presented example, with paperwork to back up all recent works and servicing, and an up to date MOT passed with flying colours meaning this car is road ready for its next owner.

Renan has supplied us with all the paperwork he has for the vehicle, including all invoices for recent works and servicing carried out under his ownership.

Not only does the car come with a solid record of works rendered, Renan is also supplying the car with all necessary body panels for the required sill restoration work, saving the owner some expense going forward.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
