Introduction

Dom Ginn
Vehicle Consigner

Nimble, chic and stylish – the French knew they were onto something special!

The Renault 5 is one of those cars that had an enduring impact on the automotive world. Originally introduced in 1972 the Renault 5 was an immediate hit with the French public and quickly began to see success in export markets too.Designed by Michel Boue, who sadly died before the “R5” was released, these cars are chic, stylish and were originally aimed at young French urbanites. They quickly became leaders in the “Supermini” segment of the market and enjoyed a production run of some 24 years with nearly 3.5 million models being produced.

This lovely, beautifully cared for example is a second generation, face-lift model in amazing original condition. It’s believed to be unrestored, has covered just over 35,000 miles since new and has only had 2 former keepers. The low mileage is supported by extensive documentation that demonstrates fastidious and conscientious ownership. And it shows! It comes to market now from ~1 year ownership, where it's been used sparingly around the local area.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Michael the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It’s such a delightful, charming car to own and drive – people love it, and so do I.

Michael is a car enthusiast having owned a number of classics over the years. He tells us “I couldn’t believe the condition of this lovely little Renault. I’d always liked them and this one, with its low mileage and only two previous owners made me give in to temptation.” Michael goes on to say “It’s a real 80’s experience, full of period charm but because it’s in such great shape it still drives superbly. The steering is taught, automatic gearbox is slick, it pulls well, and the brakes are firm and positive.”

His original plans for the car have now changed so he is keen to see it find a new home “My idea was to use it for local runs and shows. However, my circumstances have changed and I really want a project I can work on in the garage. The 5 is far too good for that so I’d love to see it go to someone who will enjoy it as much as I have.” Michael will be happy to answer any questions about this very special Renault 5 in the comments section below.

Exterior

Presented in “bleu ozone metallic” this car is endearingly French and very 80’s

Wheels and Tyres

The pressed steel 13” wheels look sound with minor signs of corrosion on the outer rim. Plastic wheel trims are in good condition with no cracks that we could see and only occasional minor scuff marks on the surface as can be seen from the images.

The wheels are wearing 55/70/R13 tyres all round which appear in sound condition with good tread remaining.

image

Bodywork

Overall, this car presents beautifully. Panel shut lines look very good and the two doors, boot and tailgate open and close precisely while the car stands straight. We could find no obvious evidence of misalignment, damage or distortion. For a 36-year-old, unrestored car the condition is really quite remarkable. There are a few minor marks here and there as you might expect, and a small area of corrosion on the rear of the nearside sill.

We've provided high-resolution images and videos detailing our observations, so please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of the car’s condition.

image

Paint

The metallic light blue paint looks very good and still retains a deep even coverage right across the car. There really wasn't anything of note that we could see, with the exception of a very minor surface scratch on the front of the offside quarter panel as shown in the photos.

Images have been taken from various angles to present the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own view on the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side and tailgate windows all appear clear and unmarked as do mirrors, lights and lenses. We could find no significant cracks or scratching.

image

Interior

Lovely period interior – light, airy and surprisingly spacious.

Seats and Carpets

The front and rear patterned blue cloth seats present very well, feel firm and comfortable, and all adjustment mechanisms work as they should. There is a very small hole worn into the driver’s seat bolster but other than that we could see no rips, tears or significant staining.

Likewise, the matching blue carpets look in good shape as do the blue edged floor mats. The carpets would benefit from a deep clean to bring them up to the high standard of the rest of the car. Door cards and remaining interior trim look good with only occasional marks, most significantly around the lower sections of the doors as can be seen from the images and video.

image

Dashboard

The characteristically 80’s dash and instrument presentation looks good with no visible signs of cracking, peeling or fading. There are, of course occasional signs of use, entirely consistent with the age and mileage of the car. However, generally speaking gauges are clear, while buttons and switchgear look good.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The moulded plastic, two spoke steering wheel appears in good condition with only minor signs of wear on the outer rim as would be expected. The Renault embossed centre section which runs into the moulded instrument surround is very typical of the period and still looks good.

The automatic gearbox selector lever appears in good condition and the display is clear and visible. We understand from Micheal that the handbrake functions well although the grip is showing some wear. Please see the interior gallery for more images.

Mechanics

Designed with urban driving in mind – agile, responsive, nimble and fun.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the 1.4L straight four, naturally aspirated engine mated to a 3-speed automatic gearbox, the Renault 5 offered lively and entertaining performance.

On this car the engine bay is clean, tidy and well maintained We could see no signs of damage, leaks or other areas for concern. The condition of the engine bay very much reflects the care that has been taken during the car’s life.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with disc brakes up front and drums on the rear this car is designed for the urban driving experience. On our test drive with Michael the ride felt compliant while the brakes slowed and stopped the car effectively when required.

image

The Drive

A charming, truly 80’s experience. On our test drive with Michael this lovely little Renault felt taught and responsive, gear changes through the automatic gearbox were without fuss, the steering appeared light, the ride was comfortable and compliant, and the brakes appeared effective. These cars were designed for the streets of French cities, and it felt perfect for that role.

Take a look at the video and see for yourself.

image

Electrics and Other

Generally speaking, electrics are basic and straightforward on cars of this period. All the switchgear looked in good condition and Michael assures us everything works exactly as it should, including the period radio/cassette!

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~1 year ownership, this low mileage car has only covered ~35,500 miles and looks to be in original condition, just 2 former keepers and lots of history to back it all up.

Like so many cars the Renault 5 used to be unremarkable. Now, it’s unusual to see one around and particularly one like this. This car is highly original, has done fewer than 1,000 miles a year since it was built and has comprehensive supporting documentation. Added to that it’s in remarkable condition reflecting the care it’s enjoyed since it was new. There can’t be many as good as this.

The car comes with its original handbook, certificates going back to the first MOT, comprehensive receipts covering a very detailed maintenance history and correspondence from the original owner, a retired mechanic.

MOT’d until the end of February 2026 this lovely Renault is ready to enjoy.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and have also actioned a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check by HPI that highlights whether the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail – this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to assess the vehicle's condition.

Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time – we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can’t be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car – just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
