Exterior

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” alloys have lasted well, with minor signs of age but free of kerb damage.

The car is fitted with the correct 50 profile Dunlop tyres. The front pair are around 20 years old, the rears are older, but all have legal tread.

image

Bodywork

The chassis rails, engine bay, floor pan, wheel wells and boot floor are solid. There is slight corrosion noted on the offside rear sill.

The body is free of any discernible damage, with no panel dents noted. They fit flush to the body and have even shut lines. All doors open and close with ease. A small exposed chip on the driver's door edge has corroded.

image

Paint

The grey paint has a positive lustre and a smooth finish. There are a handful of mild marks across the car, but nothing that distracts. The nose paint finish catches the light with a slightly different shade.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good shape, with decent seals. The lights and rear lenses are smartly presented. There is a crack on the nearside front wing indicator.

The trim is all well-mounted, showing mild signs of age in places. The most obvious wear was found on the lower plastic trim on the front air dam. There are a few mild marks on the tailgate spoiler, too.

The bumpers are flush with the body, and the rear has a few mild scuffs but otherwise is in good shape.

image

Interior

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather seats retain a decent firmness. The front seats have a few creases and bolster wear consistent with the age of the car.

The driver's side mat has a little wear, but otherwise the carpets are in good shape. The luggage area is tidy.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with a few minor age-related marks. There are screw holes on both sides of the centre console besides the footwells.

The switches and controls look good, and the dials are all legible. The interior trim and headlining have been well preserved. The air-conditioning is weak, everything else is said to work.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering and gear lever are above the expectations of a car of this age.

Mechanics

Engine and Gearbox

From cold, the engine starts and idles with ease, and the straight-six doesn’t take long to get up to temperature. All dashboard ignition lights stayed off during our visit, and there were no signs of fluid leaks. There were no unwanted exhaust fumes.

The engine has been well-maintained throughout its life, showing an impressive servicing and maintenance history. The ancillaries and hoses are good, with age-related wear on the metal components.

The automatic gearbox works with no problems, it has a positive kickdown and is free of slackness.

image

Suspension and Brakes

While the front suspension coils show their age, the open road is kind to the suspension, lower speeds a few minor noises were heard but nothing untoward.

The brakes have a good progressive feel, with no fade or squeals.

The Drive

The Supra is a sumptuous and luxurious car that is best described as a grand tourer rather than as an out-and-out sports car. An effortless cruiser, it's easy to forget that the Supra's well-weighted controls and civil manners are balanced by its impressive turbocharged punch.

The engine is refined on the move, never intrusive and smooth and performed faultlessly during our test drive. It pulls evenly, and while we didn’t push the engine, the 24-valve turbocharger has a positive reputation for manageable lag, thanks to the controlled intake airflow as part of the electronic ignition system.

The speed-sensitive power steering works perfectly, offering a good feel and precision. The engine is very flexible, allowing the driver to guide the car with confidence. The handling feels neutral, with no roll or unwanted noises heard from the wheels at speed.

There are no reports of engine temperature or oil pressure issues. The engine was left running for 10 minutes during a hot day with no problems.

Electrics and Other

The headlamps raise and retract with no issues.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
