Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The XK8 is a relaxed and refined masterpiece, and it feels reassuring and rewarding to master.

A huge investment in Jaguar in the 1990s brought the brand into a new era, which seamlessly pointed towards the potential of the company, while maintaining its established values. Certain models had leaned heavily on appeasement for specific buyers, yet the 1996 X100 Series of Jaguar XK8s was the first in line of elegantly styled coupes and convertibles to meet expectations for the futurists as well as the retro-fans.

Powered by an all-new alloy 4.0-litre AJ-V8 engine mated to an astonishingly smooth five-speed automatic gearbox, this smooth-running engine produced ~294 bhp right out of the box, instantly placing the XK8 as a world-class sports car. Furnished with the finest creature comforts, including leather trim, automatic climate control, electric memory seats, a trip computer, and a superb stereo, the XK8 interior ambience was calming, comfortable and reassuring - mirrored by the ride and handling of the car. A nod to practicality too, including rear seats and a sizeable boot, it lends itself as an everyday driver with style and ability.

Coming to market after almost 2 years, this 2000 automatic XK8 Convertible is finished in an appealing 'Westminster Blue' colour way, with a beige leather and walnut interior. It comes with every one of its past MOT certificates, only one missed in 2021. With just ~54,317 recorded miles, it was last serviced around ~300 miles ago and comes with an MOT to May 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting James the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's been on my list of cars to own for a long time, and it hasn’t disappointed!

James has long enjoyed his experiences with both cars and motorcycles over the years, and was a keen traveller. One of his dream cars was an open-top Jaguar, and he treated himself to the car in 2023.

Having used it on an occasional basis, sadly health issues have now forced the sale of the XK8, and as a result, it is covered in his carport, not being used.

James will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The XK8's styling manages to evoke the elegance of Jaguar's past glories with a modern twist.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18” ‘Double 5’ 10-spoke alloys are all in excellent shape, with a mild mark noted on the nearside front rim.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Continental tyres, with the front showing a spec of 245/45 and 255/45 to the rear. The front nearside tyre dates from 2019, the rest are around 20 years old. The older tyres have wear on the edges but still show legal tread.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Jaguar and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The exterior is in excellent shape, with no discernible panel damage - just some mild corrosion forming on both rear arch lips. The panels offer a flush fit to the body, and all doors open and close with ease. The shut lines are all consistent.

The structure is solid, with a decent boot floor, wheel wells and engine bay. The floor pan is generally good, although the front floor pan section behind the front wheels shows exposed metal corrosion and a small section of damage on the offside sill. These are not flagged as advisories on the MOT.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The 'Westminster Blue' paint is smartly presented, with signs of a previous blowover at some point. The finish is consistent but feels slightly rough when you run your hand across some of the panels - a detailer would be able to resolve this. There are a few minor stone chips and marks on the bonnet and boot, but none seem to have penetrated beyond the top coat.

A few other light scratches were spotted across the car, and a mild scuff was spotted on the bottom of the passenger door. There is also overspray on the windscreen scuttle, the bottom of the offside wheel well and a white paint dab on the lower nearside section of the rear valance.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are in good shape. The windscreen finisher trim has been painted. The lights and lenses look good, but the nearside front wing indicator is little loose. The rest of the body trim looks good, with slight paint loss spotted in the side window trim.

The bumpers are flush to the body, and the front bumper displays a few marks consistent with a mild nudge - a little paint flake and cracks. The front bumper paint finish also catches the light in a slightly different colour from certain angles.

Interior

Traditional Jaguar values of leather and walnut dominate the cabin, maintaining a truly sumptuous experience.

Seats and Carpets

The interior is simply a lovely place to be.

The driver's seat has mild creases and damage to the bolster. The rest of the leather upholstery shows minor wear but is free of rips.

The carpets and mats are in good shape, all damp-free.

The luggage carpet is good, but its trim shows marks and scuffs in line with the age of the car.

Dashboard

The dashboard presentation is excellent, with minimal marks and wear. The glovebox and gear lever surround veneer has gone slightly milky, but otherwise is free of damage. All the dials and switches look good and all, including the air-con, worked on the day of the visit.

The door cards and trim are good, and the headlining is in good shape with mild discolouration in places.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in very good condition and so too is the gear lever, just some mild veneer fade.

Mechanics

Its blend of grand touring comfort and engaging driving dynamics makes it well-suited for cruising.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up without any issues and idles smoothly, producing no unwanted rattles. The engine warning lights stay off, but we noticed that the ABS light remains on throughout our visit. James informed us that this has been checked over by a mechanic, who suspects it's a sensor issue rather than a fault with the brakes. There were no unwanted exhaust fumes at any point.

The engine presentation is positive, with some signs of age on a few metal components. The hoses and ancilleries are in good shape.

The automatic gearbox operates smoothly, engaging gears with no slippage.

The kickdown is effective and powers up without any delay or untoward noises.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components show mild surface corrosion but are compliant in use, absorbing the roads without any negative feedback. It corners smoothly with no knocking.

The brakes operate without any issues, smoothly slowing the car down with no wobbles or vibrations.

The Drive

The driving experience was elegant, reassuring, and capable - everything you would anticipate from a V8-powered Jaguar. Its relaxed nature makes more sense as a cruiser, but there’s potency in its brisk acceleration and top speed, which is part of the car's charm.

Due to James's poor health and his wife Jacqueline's reluctance to drive the car, we took the car for a short drive on their behalf, and the overall opinion is positive, with no outstanding faults noted. The car pulls well from rest, the engine is smooth when cold, and reaches temperature without any issues.

We kept the car to urban speeds, but it proved to be docile and manageable, and offers a refinement that feels like a recently-made car. The ride is supple, the suspension travel suggests good grip and no body roll at ~30 mph. We didn’t test the XK8's acceleration potential, but its good maintenance record suggests it will provide plenty of thrills when opened up. James has not reported any issues with the oil pressure or engine temperature. A new water tank recently resolved an engine cooling light issue, and it has recently been fitted with a new battery.

Electrics and Other

The passenger glass drops slightly with each door close, potentially suggesting an issue with the calibration of the regulator. James told us as far as he knows everything else is in working order.

The roof is in excellent shape; it lowers and raises without any issues, and the motors are free from strain.

History and Paperwork

It comes with 9 service invoices and all of its previous MOT certificates.

First registered in July 2000, the car comes with good documentation and maintenance history, including 9 invoices since 2004 that cover the car's servicing needs. Additional invoices for brake and suspension work are also included. It also comes with all of its MOT certificates, with only one missed in 2021.

Last serviced around ~300 miles ago, it has seen light use over the last ~10 years and has been recently fitted with a new battery and water tank. It comes with 3 of its handbooks and has an MOT to May 2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Good Afternoon,
On the cold start video ,I noticed TRAC and ASC not available illuminated on the warning binnacle. Is there an issue with the traction control system and /or active stability control?…perhaps a sensor.
Thanks.
