Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

A beautifully understated British grand tourer, combining hand-built craftsmanship, elegant styling, and smooth performance into one timeless classic.

The Alvis TD21 represents one of the most elegant expressions of Alvis’s post-war Three Litre of one of Britain’s most respected luxury car manufacturers, combining handcrafted elegance with refined grand touring capability. Built during a period when Alvis was renowned for producing exclusive, low-volume motor cars, the TD21 showcased the brand’s dedication to quality, engineering, and understated sophistication.

Introduced in the late 1950s as the successor to the successful Grey Lady models, the TD21 featured sleek coachwork by Park Ward and a refined 3.0-litre straight-six engine that delivered smooth, effortless performance suited perfectly to long-distance touring. Unlike many sports cars of the era, the Alvis focused on comfort and composure, offering a relaxed yet capable driving experience wrapped in timeless British styling.

Produced between the late 1950s and early 1960s, the TD21 sits at the heart of Alvis’s post-war Three Litre story: a refined, low-volume British grand tourer with Park Ward coachwork, a smooth 2,993cc straight-six and the understated quality that makes the marque so appealing today.

This particular 1961 Alvis TD21 Coupé / two-door saloon is a beautifully presented example of one of Britain’s most understated grand tourers. Finished in bronze over tan Connolly leather, with Park Ward coachwork, matching chassis and engine numbers, body-off restoration history, excellent interior woodwork, a discreet Tremec T5 five-speed upgrade and long-term Red Triangle specialist care, it is exactly the sort of elegant, usable and properly documented Alvis that marque buyers look for.

Red Triangle are central to the Alvis marque - the best-known specialist, authorised manufacturer and supplier of genuine Alvis parts, and the natural home for a car like this. This TD21 has been maintained by Red Triangle over many years and, immediately after Tim purchased it in July 2024, it was sent back to them for inspection, service and mechanical refresh. That recent specialist attention, combined with the historic Red Triangle file, is one of the car’s key strengths.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Tim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Alvis is a 'Gentleman's Express' - capable, understated and properly special.

The car was bought by the current owner, Tim around two years ago, and since then, the car has only covered just over ~100 miles due to health issues.

Tim tells us more about the TD21, "The car has nothing meaningful on the 'to-do' list and is ready to drive and enjoy. It was bought, sent straight to Red Triangle for servicing and a refresh, then barely used due to my health rather than any issue with the car".

The Alvis was bought as a keeper, not as a car to move on, and was sent straight to Red Triangle for a proper post-purchase inspection, service and mechanical refresh. Tim's spinal surgery and back condition has prevented him from using the car as intended which is where the car comes to market.

Tim will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Graceful lines, refined chrome detailing, and a timeless presence that exudes classic grand touring sophistication.

Wheels and Tyres

The car currently sits well on its 15-inch chrome wire wheels with Vredestein tyres that present well visually. The fronts are 2018-dated and the rears are older, so a future custodian may sensibly choose to fit a fresh matched set before extended use. That also gives the next owner the opportunity to select their preferred high-quality classic tyre while retaining the car’s correct stance and period appearance.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The Alvis was built by Park Ward, giving the car a refined and elegant shape. The bodywork here, is in excellent condition and looking around the car, there are no major dings or dents that we noted on our visit.

Body off restoration was completed in 2012 which included restoring and sealing the chassis, it's apparent that this model has been really well cared for over its lifetime.

The bonnet and boot sections both opened and closed well. Shut lines are visually equal and matching, as is the bonnet, and both doors. A great note for the doors, these shut perfectly, noting the great alignment of the panels.

When we looked over the car, we didn't see any major visual signs of marks to the body panels. If we were being very picky, there was a slight blemish to the paint on the driver side bonnet top and front wing.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a beautifully classic bronze tone, it really is a unique car on the road, plenty of head turns driving out. The TD21 has understated presence and looks every bit the timeless classic. The car was previously coloured in blue and was resprayed in 2012 as part of its restorative works.

Looking over the Alvis, we didn't spot many issues over the main body of the car, moving to the boot and rear section, there were a few areas where the paint appeared to have split and showing cracking to the finish. We've detailed these sections in the image gallery.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the glass sections around the Alvis looked really smart. Windscreen, windows, mirrors lights and lenses, all appeared in a great condition with no cracks, chips or significant scratching that we observed on our visit.

The body trim, chrome work and badges showed very well.

Interior roof and trim all showed with lovely presentation.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking car the TD21 really is.

image

Interior

Traditional British craftsmanship takes centre stage, with rich wood veneers, elegant detailing, and a timeless cabin designed for refined grand touring comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The stunning tan Connolly leather seats are in superb condition and have been re-trimmed. The rear section reflected the same condition, with barely a mark on this section. The Alvis has had period correct rear seatbelts fitted.

The carpets in the cabin also show really nicely, with minimal signs of use. Looking underneath the mats showed no worrying issues. Looking over the boot section, again this area displayed well and is clean and tidy.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The beautifully sculpted wood dash with leather trim appears in stunning shape with no issues to report. The top of the dash presents well and without splits, cracking, or warping. Both the dashboard and wood are in excellent condition as you'll see in the images and videos.

The odometer displayed ~62,767 miles at the time of our visit.

The gauges, switches, and controls are beautifully presented; all faces look clean and clear, they show no fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights, and the dials were all functioning without concern.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the Alvis's dashboard. Head over and see the car's cabin in finer detail.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic 3-spoke steering wheel shows a lovely finish and features a central Alvis decal that nicely complements the rest of the interior. Nothing of significant concern was observed here, just a few signs of patina.

The gear stick showed minimal amount of use and no visible signs of damage, presenting in lovely condition. The handbrake looked in great condition also.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

A smooth and characterful straight-six engine, delivering effortless cruising performance perfectly suited to its refined grand touring nature.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a smooth and refined 3.0L engine, the Alvis was impressive, starting on the button, idling smoothly, and performing as it should on the road. The TD21 turned over on first start and notably, ran very quietly when first looking over the car - a testament to its quality engineering.

Tim reports no issues during his ownership, with the 5-speed manual gearbox delivering power seamlessly. Out on the drive, the car moved effortlessly through the gears, reinforcing its refined, capable character.

Propshaft and associated gearbox work was completed, documented at a cost of over £4,800.00 The Alvis was upgraded in 2015 with a later Tremec T5 gearbox conversion.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around some local roads, and for a closer look underneath the TD21 and the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were driving, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey, and brought the car to a stop without a problem. The front of the car is equipped with disc brakes and drums to the rear. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no concerns out on the road.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

The TD21 is not a sports car in the modern sense, but it was a genuine 100mph gentleman’s express in period. Its appeal lies in the way it combines smooth six-cylinder performance, long-legged touring ability and hand-built British refinement - helped here by the discreet Tremec T5 five-speed conversion.

Please watch the Mechanical Review video to see the car being driven by Tim around the local area.

image

Electrics and Other

The Alvis features a classic radio system. The car has limited other electric functions, although these aren't the focus of the car, more so, it's a car of style, elegance and real character.

Tim told us everything else was in working order as far as he was aware.

History and Paperwork

Well documented, Red Triangle extensive servicing, low mileage and sensibly refreshed - a rare Alvis, beautifully set for many more miles ahead.

This elegant 1961 Alvis TD21 is a beautifully presented and well-documented example of one of Britain's most understated grand tourers. Finished in bronze with tan Connolly leather, it was subject to a body-off restoration in 2012 and later upgraded with a Tremec T5 five-speed manual gearbox for more relaxed modern use.

The Alvis has been maintained over many years by Red Triangle and, immediately after purchase in 2024 it was sent back to Red Triangle for inspection, service and mechanical refresh.

Red Triangle the best-known Alvis specialist and the authorised manufacturer / supplier of genuine Alvis parts. Their involvement is one of the most important aspects of this car. The file contains extensive paperwork from previous ownership, as well as the more recent work commissioned.

The supplied paperwork includes Red Triangle collection / delivery forms, 3,000-mile service paperwork, road test report, PDI report, Crypton / compression test, estimates and final invoice material.

Red Triangle recent work here included: oil, gearbox oil and final drive oil checks; clutch fluid and universal joint lubrication; brake, steering and suspension inspection; washer jet/wiper system work; reverse light work; exhaust adjustment; carburettor fuel leak rectification; replacement float needle and seat; bonnet catch replacement/adjustment; tappet adjuster issue rectified; engine oil leak area cleaned and checked and road testing and final checks.

The post-purchase Red Triangle paperwork also shows the sort of sensible recommissioning that matters on a car of this age: not glamorous work, but exactly the kind of specialist sorting that makes the car usable and confidence-inspiring.

Now showing ~62,767 miles, with only minimal use since that specialist attention, it comes with a large history and paperwork file, period-correct rear seatbelts and an Alvis / CTEK battery conditioner.

The MOT certificates, service invoices and works receipts are available to view in the paperwork gallery section. The Alvis is accompanied by a great history file, its original owner’s manual and significant amount of maintenance records, also presented in the “History and Paperwork” section.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
