Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

This Porsche 928 S is presented in its original and highly distinctive combination of 'Light Bronze' Metallic over 'Mokkabraun' perforated leather.

Powered by the desirable 4.7-litre V8 and paired with automatic transmission, this early S-model perfectly captures the refined grand touring character that made the 928 such an important car for Porsche in the 1980s.

Coming to market after just over 3 years with our vendor, during which the car has benefitted from extensive recommissioning and mechanical investment totalling over £14,500, including major work by renowned marque specialists 928 Specialists Ltd. Supported by an impressive history file, magazine-feature provenance and careful long-term ownership, this is an exceptionally well-presented and highly usable example of Porsche’s landmark V8 GT.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Tim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I bought the 928 because I wanted an early S finished in the right colour combination, and after finding this car I invested heavily in properly recommissioning it while keeping its original character intact.

Tim’s 928 S is exactly the sort of example enthusiasts hope to find: a highly original-feeling early car with the right specification, extensive documentation and significant recent investment in the areas that matter most.

Rather than modifying or over-restoring the car, Tim focused on carefully recommissioning and preserving it, commissioning substantial specialist work to improve usability and reliability while maintaining the 928’s wonderfully period character. The result is a striking and genuinely well-sorted example that feels true to Porsche’s original vision for the model.

Tim's only reason for sale is due to recent spinal health issues, meaning he's having to reduce his collection.

Tim will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The exterior of this early 928 S presents extremely well and perfectly captures the clean, futuristic styling that made the model such a standout design when new, with the rare Light Bronze Metallic finish giving the car a particularly authentic period presence.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on its correct-style 16-inch Porsche Teledial alloy wheels, one of the defining visual features of the early 928 S.

The wheels present well overall and suit the understated grand touring character of the car perfectly, while the Toyo Proxes tyres appear to be in good visual condition.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork benefits from a substantial restoration and repaint completed in 2016/17 prior to current ownership, including a full glass-out repaint in the original factory colour.

Historic documentation notes that genuine Porsche seals, clips and exterior fittings were used during the work, helping preserve the car’s factory appearance and overall integrity.

Panel fit appears strong throughout, with the car retaining the wonderfully clean surfacing and distinctive shark-nose styling that define the early 928. The overall impression is of a highly usable and carefully maintained example rather than an over-restored showpiece.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in its original L37B 'Light Bronze' / 'Hellbronze Metallic', this 928 S stands apart from the more common silver, red or black examples often seen today. The colour works exceptionally well with the shape of the car and gives it a distinctly period Porsche feel that has become increasingly desirable in recent years.

The paintwork continues to present very well overall, with only a handful of minor age-related imperfections visible upon closer inspection, including a small chip on one wing mirror.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The exterior trim, lighting and glass all appear well presented and in keeping with the car’s careful ownership history. Features such as the wraparound rear glass, pop-up headlamps and rear spoiler remain standout elements of the design, reinforcing the unmistakable character of the early 928.

The car also retains desirable factory features including the electric sunroof and original-style exterior trim details, all of which contribute to the car’s highly original overall appearance.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

The interior perfectly complements the car’s exterior specification, retaining the wonderfully futuristic and driver-focused atmosphere that makes early 928 cabins so distinctive.

Seats and Carpets

Trimmed in original 'Mokkabraun' perforated leather, the cabin presents exceptionally well for the age of the car and retains a highly authentic early-1980s Porsche feel throughout. The tombstone-style seats remain one of the highlights of the interior design, combining comfort with the unmistakable character of the early 928.

The matching deep-pile carpets, rear luggage area and interior trim all appear well preserved, helping reinforce the car’s carefully maintained and largely original presentation.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard layout remains wonderfully period and highly driver focused, with the signature sweeping design and integrated instrument binnacle giving the cabin a uniquely futuristic feel even by modern standards. The brown dashboard, matching headlining tones and original switchgear all remain in keeping with the car’s factory specification and overall originality.

During current ownership, various electrical and instrument-related items were professionally investigated and rectified, including instrument cluster repairs, illumination bulb replacement and HVAC-related electrical work.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original-style Porsche steering wheel remains a focal point of the cabin and perfectly suits the grand touring nature of the car. Paired with the automatic gear selector and low-slung driving position, the interior delivers exactly the refined yet mechanical feel expected of an early V8 Porsche GT.

The cabin has also benefitted from a discreet modern Bluetooth and audio upgrade by AVIT, allowing modern usability without compromising the original appearance or atmosphere of the interior.

image

Mechanics

Extensive recent mechanical recommissioning and specialist attention make this one of the more thoroughly sorted early 928 S examples currently available.

Engine and Gearbox

Power comes from Porsche’s 4.7-litre naturally aspirated V8, paired with the perfectly suited automatic transmission. During current ownership, the car benefitted from a substantial mechanical improvement programme carried out primarily by 928 Specialists Ltd, with over £10,640 spent addressing many of the expensive age-related issues commonly associated with the model.

Work completed included fuel system repairs and replacement pipework, engine mount replacement, sump gasket and oil sender seal work, cooling system servicing, exhaust replacement, fuel relay replacement, air filter replacement and extensive electrical investigation and rectification.

The gearbox is reported to operate correctly and suits the grand touring nature of the 928 perfectly, delivering smooth progress while still retaining the mechanical character expected of an early Porsche V8.

The cambelts were replaced in 2017 and subsequently inspected by Octane Garage in 2023, who confirmed they remained within the recommended time-based service interval.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension system has received considerable recent attention, including replacement front and rear dampers, springs, spring pans, upper and lower wishbone bushes, anti-roll bar bracket work and steering-related servicing. A powder-coated replacement crossmember was also fitted during the recommissioning programme.

The braking system has likewise been comprehensively sorted, including rebuilt brake calipers with new seals and replacement pistons, replacement backing plates, replacement flexi lines, brake servo and master cylinder work, and full bleeding of the system.

The result is a 928 that feels notably tighter, more usable and more confidence inspiring than many examples that have not benefitted from similar expenditure.

image

The Drive

The early 928 S remains one of the great long-distance GT cars of its era, combining strong V8 performance with refinement, stability and excellent road manners. Tim reports the car drives extremely well following the extensive recommissioning work, while still retaining the wonderfully analogue and mechanical feel that makes these early cars so appealing today.

In European-market 928 S form, the 4.7-litre V8 produced around 300PS, with Porsche quoting 0–100km/h in approximately 7.1 seconds for the automatic and a top speed of around 152mph, making this a genuinely rapid period GT rather than simply a stylish cruiser.

The timing of this auction is also interesting given the renewed attention around the Porsche 928. Harry Metcalfe has just added a 928 to Harry’s Garage and made it the subject of his latest video, which is a meaningful endorsement from one of the UK’s most respected modern-classic voices. Long regarded by many enthusiasts as undervalued relative to its engineering depth, design significance and Porsche status, the 928 now feels like a car being properly reassessed. For buyers looking for a distinctive, usable and technically fascinating Porsche GT, a well-sorted early 928 S such as this looks increasingly compelling. We'll put a link to the video in the comments below.

Electrics and Other

928s are well known for electrical complexity, making the recent work carried out to this example especially important. During current ownership the fuel gauge, instrument cluster, relay systems, HVAC-related electrical items, alternator and various ignition and wiring issues were professionally investigated and addressed.

The air conditioning has also been recommissioned and blows ice cold, a particularly desirable feature on any 928. The car additionally benefits from a discreet Bluetooth and upgraded audio installation by AVIT, improving usability while maintaining the cabin’s original appearance.

The car can occasionally show a red dashboard warning light linked to the amber low-fuel warning lamp within the fuel gauge. This is not an engine, oil pressure, temperature, charging or braking issue; the car has plenty of fuel and drives normally. It appears to be one of the familiar minor 928 electrical/gauge quirks, with the warning appearing intermittently and then clearing again during use or after cycling the ignition. Given the extensive recent electrical, instrument and fuel-system work already carried out, it is best understood as a minor warning-light behaviour rather than a running or mechanical fault.

History and Paperwork

This 928 S is accompanied by an exceptionally impressive history file, supported by extensive documentation, specialist invoices and original Porsche literature.

The car benefits from a substantial archive of invoices, receipts and servicing documentation dating back many years, including original Porsche manuals, service books, brochures and period accessories. It was previously featured as a seven-page Ultimate Porsche magazine feature car and retains strong provenance throughout its history.

Current ownership alone accounts for over £14,500 of documented expenditure, including major recommissioning work by renowned marque specialists 928 Specialists Ltd alongside further maintenance and electrical work by Octane Garage. Since Tim bought the car it has been carefully stored in an insulated dehumidified garage while maintained on a battery conditioner.

Finally, Tim told us he acquired the car because it was already a very attractive, well-known and well-documented example, but then undertook a major mechanical sorting programme. The most significant work was carried out by 928 Specialists Ltd, invoice number 2615, dated 09/10/2023, for a total of £10,640.07, paid in full - that invoice is extensive and covers many of the areas experienced 928 buyers worry about, i.e:

* Investigation and repair of fuel gauge / level fault
* Instrument cluster removal and repair
* Replacement instrument cluster bracketry and retaining parts
* Replacement illumination bulbs
* Washer jet investigation and replacement
* Fuel pump relay investigation and replacement with correct relay
* Replacement front and rear dampers
* Replacement front and rear springs with spring pans
* Replacement corroded fuel return lines
* Replacement fuel pipework around tank/pump/accumulator areas
* Fuel tank removal to access failing return fuel lines
* Replacement fuel tank balance pipe
* Replacement corroded fuel tank cradle
* Replacement fuel tank-to-pump hose
* Crossmember removal to access sump gasket
* Sump removal, cleaning and oil level sender seal replacement
* Upper wishbone bushes renewed
* Engine mountings replaced
* Powder-coated replacement crossmember fitted
* Lower wishbone bushes replaced with polybushes
* Power steering return hose replaced
* Steering rack gaiters replaced
* Front brake disc backing plates replaced
* Callipers investigated, rebuilt with new seals and corroded pistons replaced
* Incorrect front brake flexi lines replaced
* Anti-roll bar brackets replaced/repositioned
* Engine oil and filter replaced
* Power steering system refilled
* Braking system bled
* Replacement front grille assembled and fitted
* Exhaust system replaced with a good used original unit
* Air filter replaced
* Missing alternator duct replaced
* External air temperature sensor rewired to enable HVAC control
* AC system removed/refitted to access failed brake servo
* Brake servo and master cylinder replaced with good used parts
* AC system regassed
* Cooling system refilled
* Road tested, with braking system recorded as now OK

That is not cosmetic tidying. It is the sort of unglamorous, expensive mechanical work that makes a 928 far less risky and far more usable - the invoice includes 67 hours of labour plus a major parts list, showing the depth of work carried out.

The car comes with rare original and period items including:
* Porsche Cars GB Certificate of Authenticity
* Service and maintenance book
* User manual
* Radio manual
* Porsche ownership pocket guide
* Porsche service map
* Porsche radio station guide
* Original Porsche literature and 928 brochures
* Porsche clothing/accessories guide and pricelist
* Parts and technical reference catalogue
* Original 1982 Porsche detailing Kit
* Two sets of keys including code tag.
* Spare cargo net
* Spare relays
* Full tool kit and spare equipment
* Ultimate Porsche magazine featuring this car

For enthusiasts seeking a properly documented and mechanically sorted early 928 S, the supporting paperwork and recent investment with this example are a significant part of its appeal.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

    A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

    If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

    Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

    Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

    Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

    Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
