Designed by Italian studio Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built by coachbuilder Karmann, the Karmann Ghia (Type 14) stands as one of Volkswagen’s most iconic creations - affectionately known as 'the Beetle in an evening gown.' Introduced to elevate VW's image from purely utilitarian to genuinely stylish, it combined swooping, hand-finished Italian elegance with simple, reliable air-cooled engineering. The 1966 model year marked a key turning point in its history with the introduction of the 1300cc engine, adding vital highway capability to match its head-turning looks. Today, it remains a celebrated symbol of mid-century design and a cornerstone of classic Volkswagen heritage.

Widely celebrated as one of the most beautiful automotive shapes of the 20th century, the Karmann Ghia effortlessly marries exotic Italian elegance with bulletproof German engineering. While mechanically built on the simple, reliable foundations of the Beetle, its bodywork was remarkably labour-intensive. Each panel was meticulously hand-welded, butt-jointed, and finished with lead solder to create a smooth, seamless silhouette. The result was a coach-built masterpiece that offered genuine Italian style and artisanal craftsmanship at a fraction of the cost of its exotic contemporaries.

Finished in classic Lotus White over a contrasting black vinyl interior, this remarkably original 1966 Karmann Ghia presents in near-factory condition throughout. Preserved for almost half a century under the dry California sun with its original owner, it stands as one of the most authentic examples on the market today. Imported to the UK in 2016, it has remained in the care of dedicated enthusiasts committed to maintaining its pristine originality.

Supported by a detailed history file with invoices dating from the late 1960s to date, it retains its original owner’s manuals, stamped service book, two keys, and a collection of spare parts. Meet the owner

It feels like driving a piece of history, so I only take it out on perfectly dry, sunny days.

The lines of the car are exceptional; probably the closest comparison is the early Porsches, which follow the same flowing, curved body shape. And the interior is a study in simplicity, beauty, and form following function. Car manufacturers today could really learn some old tricks from cars like the KG to help overcome the uninspiring 'appliance' nature of the modern car.

As only its third owner from new, David has viewed his stewardship as responsibility and a true labour of love. Though initially hesitant to drive the car for fear of spoiling its untouched state, an exceptional summer provided ample opportunity to enjoy it on dry, sunny roads. Exercising it without any threat of rain, David noted that the car felt right at home - almost as if it had returned to sunny California.

Exterior

Highly original and solid throughout, it has to be seen to be fully appreciated.

Wheels and Tyres

The car rides on 15-inch steel wheels fitted with clean, factory-original wheel trims that show only mild cosmetic age.

All four wheels are wrapped in classic white-wall 165 SR 15 Semperit tyres. While they retain good tread depth and show no visible cracking, the lack of date codes indicates they are at least 20 years old.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in solid condition, showing no noticeable rust or panel damage. Exterior panel fit and shut lines are reassuringly tight, consistent with what is believed to be factory-original construction. The doors latch easily with minimal effort, though the door stays on both sides are worn and no longer hold the doors open. The door seals show typical wear consistent with the car’s age.

The underside is solid, well-preserved, and completely unpainted. While there are mild, age-typical signs of surface wear on parts of the floorpan and lower body panels, the structure remains reassuringly original. David has carefully preserved its condition by keeping the car garaged and driving it exclusively in fine weather. The engine bay, suspension mounts, and luggage area are all in solid shape.

Paint

The Lotus White paintwork is believed to be factory-original, holding a consistent finish and a nice gloss throughout. The nose has a few stone chips and minor touch-ups, along with small surface marks elsewhere, most notably minor paint loss under the offside rear side glass trim. However, these minor blemishes do not detract from the car's impressive overall presentation.

Glass and Trim

The glass and light lenses are in good condition. While modern sealed units have replaced the original headlights, the factory units are included with the car, and all indicators comply with UK road standards. The window and light seals show expected signs of age but remain completely functional.

Exterior trim is securely fitted, with minor surface wear on the rear bezels that matches the vehicle's original character.

Similarly, the bumpers show age-appropriate pitting at both ends, which has been intentionally preserved to maintain the car's authentic patina.

Interior

The black vinyl interior remains remarkably intact, clean, and factory-correct.

Seats and Carpets

The vinyl seats are in excellent condition, remaining firm, supportive, and free of significant wear. David has fitted aftermarket seat covers to protect the original material and prevent the vinyl from getting hot in warm weather.

The interior carpets are equally well preserved, protected by factory rubber mats which are themselves covered by a second set of protective floor mats. Both luggage compartments are also in great shape, showing no signs of heavy use.

Dashboard

The dashboard, controls, dials, and switches are all well-preserved and reportedly fully functional. While the odd piece of interior trim displays minor age, the cabin presents very well overall.

The surrounding interior trim is clean throughout, featuring smart door cards and a tidy headlining.

Mechanics

Behind the wheel, it delivers a highly tactile, deeply nostalgic experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up without hesitation, cranking smoothly and catching within two to three seconds of turning the key. It settles into a steady idle characterised by a healthy mechanical whir and a rhythmic exhaust note. The engine sounds in good health, with the distinct valve clatter, cooling fan whir, and deep exhaust tone all present and correct. The oil pressure light extinguishes immediately once running, and no fluid leaks were observed during our inspection.

The engine compartment presents well, displaying an unmodified, factory-correct appearance. All tinware is complete and in good condition, and the car retains its original 6-volt electrical system.

David reports that the gearbox feels great, offering precise, quiet, and satisfying mechanical gear changes. The clutch operates smoothly with no reported issues, and the drivetrain remains quiet with no unwanted noises at higher speeds.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride is firm yet compliant, absorbing road imperfections without any harsh knocks or clunks. The car tracks straight and true, even over uneven road surfaces.

The brakes deliver smooth, predictable stopping power, operating quietly and pulling up straight with no judder or squeal.

The Drive

Powered by Volkswagen's famously durable 1.3-litre air-cooled engine, which marked a major milestone when it debuted in the Karmann Ghia for the 1966 model year by replacing the underpowered 1200. This single-port flat-four holds a celebrated place in VW history as the engine that brought much-needed highway usability and torque to the lineup, cementing the brand’s global reputation for bulletproof mechanical reliability.

The car feels surprisingly sprightly off the line as David works through the long gears, a character perfectly suited to the picturesque country lanes of Berkshire. While the steering displays a small amount of dead play, it turns in precisely through corners without any knocks or vibration. Power delivery is smooth and even, free of any hesitation or splutter, while the distinct, metallic beat of the 1300cc engine fills the cabin. Though loud by modern standards, the engine note is delightfully smooth and rhythmic.

David reports total confidence in the car's reliability, having experienced no issues with oil pressure or engine temperatures during his ownership.

Electrics and Other

Maintenance during David’s ownership has been straightforward, requiring only minimal work to keep the car running perfectly. Notable improvements include a refurbished horn and the sourcing of a rare, new-old-stock washer/wiper switch.

History and Paperwork

Retaining much of its provenance since new, the documentation and invoices chronicle a beautifully preserved lifetime of care.

Originally delivered to California in 1966, the car was owned stateside by a NASA technical advisor who kept it for an incredible 49 years. It was subsequently imported to the UK in 2016 by its second owner, who addressed minor maintenance needs including a track rod end and a comprehensive service with a brake overhaul. Acquired by David in 2025, this exceptionally preserved car has received further mechanical attention, including a recent oil change and fresh engine seals.

The car retains much of its original documentation, including the factory service book featuring early stamps, owner’s manuals, Bendix radio literature with its original receipt, and an official Volkswagen certificate of authenticity. This is further complemented by a US history file spanning from the late 1960s through to the early 2000s.

Also included in the sale is a box of service items, various enthusiast books and magazines, the original US license plates, and a selection of spare parts - including exterior trim pieces. (Please note: the vintage suitcases pictured are not included in the sale).

It comes complete with two keys and benefits from both MOT and road tax exemption due to its historic status.

    Hi Ben, no there is no filler, rust or welding anywhere on the car, it is effectively as it left the factory.
