The E-Type's debut in 1961 fundamentally reshaped the sports car landscape. At the time, comparable exotics from Ferrari or Aston Martin offered similar performance and visual drama, but cost roughly double or triple the price. Jaguar brought supercar styling and genuine 150 mph performance to a significantly broader market, forcing rival manufacturers to rethink both their design languages and pricing structures.

The Series 1 4.2 litre 2+2 is so highly regarded because it combines the pure, iconic styling of the original glass headlight bodywork with a more usable, spacious cabin and superior low-end engine torque; it stands above other E Types as the ultimate real-world grand tourer, offering the perfect balance of classic Series 1 beauty, rear seat practicality, and effortless modern usability that holds up brilliantly on today's roads.

This 1967 Jaguar E-Type 2+2, comes to market from almost 5 years with our vendor, it is finished in red with a black leather interior and comes with an impressive provenance of maintenance, upkeep, and cosmetic work spanning two decades and totalling almost £14,000. It has seen an additional £2,200 of mechanical expenditure under current ownership and has been garaged throughout. It is offered with two sets of keys, the owner's handbook, and MOT certificates dating back to 1996.

Meet the owner

With loads of space and a supple ride, it outclasses modern stuff all day long.

Jim spent decades in the motor trade while actively competing in circuit racing, hill climbs, and single seater formula events. Spotting the car for sale in 2021, he bought it as he had long appreciated the 2+2 ride quality and robust power.

Exterior

Finished in a striking coat of deep red, it presents with captivating charm and timeless elegance.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” wire wheels are presentable, showing signs of age on the rims but appear to be good candidates for a deep clean.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Vredestein Sprint ST Tyres with a spec of 185 SR 15; these are date-coded from 2018. All show even tread and are in good shape.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The exterior makes a positive impression, with good panel alignment and uniform gaps throughout. No visible panel damage appears on the bodywork. However, minor bubbling under the paint is present below the offside rear corner of the rear valance, alongside further bubbling on the nearside rear arch and both sills. We also noted minor cracks at the base of both rear arches. Closing the doors takes slight effort, likely due to the rubber seals, while the driver door latch mechanism may benefit from minor adjustment.

The underside looks solid - the floor pan shows minor signs of age, but the suspension mountings, wheel wells, boot floor and engine bay are all clean.

Paint

The red paintwork shows consistent coverage. Whilst bright sunlight reveals light swirling across the finish, it retains a good shine.

A few minor marks are present, including small bubbles under the paint on the boot lid, faint marks near the boot opening, and a slight imperfection on the top of the bonnet. The black marks on the offside corner of the bonnet near the headlight are purely superficial.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen displays a minor lamination mark on the passenger side, alongside a few faint scuffs on the passenger window glass. The lights and lenses are in good condition.

The trim remains in good condition with no significant issues. Both bumpers are securely mounted and look smart.

Interior

Upholstered in rich leather with fine appointments, the cabin remains beautifully preserved.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats present cleanly and offer comfortable support - the carpets remain in good condition.

Whilst the passenger footwell is missing a small section of carpet, it shows no signs of dampness elsewhere.

The boot is tidy, suggesting careful and light use.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents smartly, with no issues affecting the padding or centre console. A few minor signs of wear appear on the facia, but the dials, iconic toggle switches and controls remain in good order, with all reported to function correctly.

The door cards and the remaining interior trim are in good condition, whilst the fabric headlining is in excellent shape

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with a smaller wood-rimmed steering wheel, which looks smart.

The gear lever is in good order, showing minor patina on the selector.

Mechanics

A confident performer, the renowned XK straight six delivers muscular torque and effortless, silky power.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up smoothly within a few seconds of cranking and settles quickly into a steady, rhythmic idle. It is free from rattles or clattering, and all the dashboard lights remain off. Apart from the expected cold engine condensation, the exhaust remains clear throughout.

The engine presents cleanly, with everything pointing towards regular maintenance and upkeep.

The three-speed automatic gearbox operates without any reported faults, engaging smoothly and free from any unwanted noise.

Suspension and Brakes

The car absorbs road surfaces without any issues, delivering a supple and composed ride that soaks up bumps and road imperfections without any clunks or negative feedback.

The brakes have been upgraded to a Coopercraft set, which adds confidence to how the car stops.

No wobbles or vibrations were noted.

The Drive

The 4.2 litre XK straight-six engine was enlarged to provide the massive low-end torque required to effortlessly pull Jaguar's first automatic transmission. This three-speed Borg-Warner unit could only fit into the E-Type lineup after the body was stretched into the longer, taller 2+2 grand tourer configuration, which was specifically engineered to conquer the lucrative American luxury market.

Notably, torque is ample much lower down the rev range, feeling lively when setting off. The engine pulls evenly, with no spluttering or hesitation on the move, whilst the stainless steel exhaust adds an engaging but never intrusive rasp to the comfortable experience. The steering remained responsive throughout the drive, with Jim happy with the road feel.

Oil pressure showed 40 PSI at cold start-up, rising to 60 PSI when accelerating, and maintaining 40 to 50 PSI whilst driving. This describes a textbook healthy straight-six. Jim has been pleased with the reliability of the car and reports no issues with engine temperature.

Electrics and Other

The car features several useful upgrades, including a Kenlowe fan, heavy-duty starter motor, full stainless steel exhaust, Bluetooth music system and an electronic ignition system.

History and Paperwork

A comprehensive history file documents twenty-five years of continuous care and preservation.

The car was originally built for export to the US. It arrived in New York in 1969 and is believed to have remained in the States for the following two decades. It was shipped back to the UK in 1990 and converted to right-hand drive. It passed through the hands of several owners over the years, including a period in Australia around the early 2000s before returning to the UK.

The owner prior to Jim kept the car for 16 years and invested substantial time into its upkeep. It retains a folder full of receipts and invoices totalling over £14,000 dating back to 2003, detailing a cosmetic restoration in 2008 and £3,400 spent at Coopercraft in 2014 for a running gear overhaul. Work completed within the last ten years includes a differential overhaul and a new flywheel.

The car comes with two sets of keys, its handbook, several V5 documents tracking ownership back to 2005, and MOT certificates dating back to the mid-1990s.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

    Greetings. What a lovely car! Probably a stupid question but is there power steering? How smooth is the ‘box and is there any axle sound? (I’ve had 4.2 Jaguar of this vintage previously so a bit of experience…). Thank you. Philippe

    Not stupid at all, No it does not have power steering, i had contiplated fitting electric ,but i have got used to it being heavy when manouvering at slow speed like parking. once up to speed i don’t notice it I have been told that there are tyres from Blockley tyres that improve this,also it has a smaller than standard steering wheel.Gearbox work perfectly axle quiet.

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
