Introduction
Paul Wright
With a more masculine presence, the successor to the 924 is certainly a desirable transaxle Porsche to own.
Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982 to replace the 924 as its entry-level model, although the 924 continued until 1988 as a lower-priced alternative. Many Porsche enthusiasts considered the 944 to be the first real front-engined Porsche because it didn’t have the Audi-sourced 2.0-litre engine from the 924. Instead, the 944 started life with a 2.5-litre straight-4 engine, which was based on one-half of the Porsche 928's V8 engine.
Starting with the earlier 924 body, some noticeable changes included flared wings, flared quarter panels, and a larger rear spoiler. In 1985, the 944 underwent its first significant changes. The interior was given a facelift and a much more modern feel and look, with a completely new dash and door panels. To help keep those lines nice and smooth, the radio aerial was moved from the standard vertical position, instead being embedded in the windscreen. Other changes included new front and rear cast aluminium control arms and semi-trailing arms, and a larger fuel tank.
This lovely, usable example of the 944 comes from eleven and a half years with our vendor, and features Fuchs wheels, sports seats, and all-important new sills. It also comes with a fresh MOT despite being MOT and road tax exempt.
