Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The SL model range has evolved over the years - producing some of the most beautiful looking Mercedes-Benz to date.

Originally launched in 1954, the SL is a two-seater roadster which has grown in popularity to become one of the most iconic models in Mercedes-Benz history, providing the perfect mixture of performance and luxury.

Over the years the cars were available as a soft top convertible, then moving forward with the addition of a removable hardtop as well as the hardtop. This was a good idea and perfect for the winter months, with the hardtop making it more like a normal bodied car, although it was a two person job to lift off and refit the roof.

In 2002, Mercedes stepped up the game with the SL, with a whole host of technological wizardry added to the grand tourer. One of the main changes was the fully removable hardtop roof at the touch of a single button. You could be sitting at the traffic lights and within 16-20 seconds, the roof would be off ready to enjoy the sunshine. This main feature alone proved a huge selling point for the luxurious German two-seater roadster.

Lindsey has enjoyed the luxury and performance of the SL500 for nearly 3 years, but with a new car due, the space is needed, so this low mileage German machine is up for grabs.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Lindsey the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Clearly a family who love cars, the SL500 was the perfect 2 seater hardtop convertible sports car.

Lindsey purchased the SL500 in September 2019, which she has thoroughly enjoyed, even though only approximately ~4,500 miles have been put on the car whilst in her ownership.

The car would be kept if it wasn't for the arrival of a new daily taking the parking space of the SL500. A hard top convertible perfect for the summer months and colder brisk sunny winters days, drop the roof at the touch of a button and listen to that V8 roar. Lindsey will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in Brilliant Silver - this really is the perfect colour choice for this silver arrow.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels on the SL500 look to be in original condition, there are no kerb marks to be seen. A freshen up with some alloy wheel cleaner should remove some of the remaining brake dust. Split rim 19" options fitted to this example give it that little something extra.

The tyres are worn but do have a good number of miles left on them for the new owner.

Bodywork

Walking around the Mercedes, the panel gaps all align nice and straight for the bonnet, boot and doors, and down the sides there are no car park niggles that we could see.

The boot lid would need to have the boot struts replaced, as these don’t hold the boot up too well. The hard top looks to work as quickly as it should, operating smoothly as it opens and closes. Please take the time to view the gallery for more high quality detailed images.

Paint

The Mercedes is finished in Brilliant Silver. The paintwork is in good condition with just a few stone chips to the lower section of the bumper, and an odd few on the bonnet edge. There are some very light age-related light scratches which look like they could be polished out easily with the right equipment.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the wonderful SL500 at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The windows for the convertible are in good condition to the sides and rear, there are some light scratches to the driver’s side window.

The black trim around the windows is all finished nicely, which looks to have no corrosion under the black finish, as you sometimes get. The headlights and foglights are free from any cracks and the headlights are nice and clear without showing signs of any discoloration. The rear lights are also free from any chips.

Interior

Luxurious leather and electric everything - these are the perfect touches you would expect from such a high end vehicle.

Seats and Carpets

The electric, heated leather seats in the SL500 are in excellent condition, as you would expect with just ~54,732 miles on the car.

The carpets too are in excellent condition, thanks to them being covered with a set of Mercedes-Benz over mats which are also in good order. The boot area is nice and clean with the cover in place to protect the hardtop. Under the carpet is the spare wheel and air compressor.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any damage, with the instruments working as they should and showing no warning lights with the engine running.

The only area to point out is that the centre air vents have a few marks around them to the plastic finish. These can be easily marked as it gets older. The centre console is finished with a wood effect trim and is in nice condition, with no cracking. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good order, with minimal wear to the leather and the multifunction buttons.

The gear knob is alos in nice condition together with the surround, and the gaiter is free from any splits.

Mechanics

A 5.0L V8 coupled to an automatic gearbox makes driving the Gran Tourer an extremely pleasurable experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 in this stunning SL500 breathes into life with the first flick of the key, and sounds amazing. There are no untoward noises to be heard from the well serviced V8.

With 306BHP itching to go, Lindsey reports that the car pulls well through all of the gears, as seen in the on the road video.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension sits nice and level and the car is reported to handle well, with no noises coming from the suspension components.

Drilled discs at the front bring the SL to a halt nice and straight. There is a small lip on the edge of the disc, but they still look to have plenty of life left on them (dependent on driving style).

The Drive

The two seater hardtop convertible is an absolute pleasure to own, offering the best of both worlds for summer and winter, with the convertible hardtop. At the touch of a button you can drop the roof in around 16 seconds.

The 5.0 litre V8 has more than enough power and performance to offer any enthusiastic driver plenty of smiles for many miles in this fantastic Mercedes-Benz SL500.

Electrics and Other

All the switchgear is in good condition and reported to be working as it should.

There is a Bluetooth adapter fitted to the air vent, which will allow you to connect and play music from your phone through the factory fit speakers. There is also a CD multichanger mounted in the storage compartment behind the passenger seat.

There is no navigation disc for the satellite navigation system, meaning this does not work for navigation.

History and Paperwork

9 service stamps and low miles - means the Mercedes-Benz is just about run in for the new custodian.

The SL500 has been given a fresh MOT, which it passed with no advisories, as it has done for the past 5 years. The new MOT is valid until the 11th November 2022. The original driver’s handbooks and Mercedes-Benz wallet are present, along with the service booklet that shows 9 service stamps.

Please note, the registration number on the vehicle, E20 KAN, will be removed from the car and is not included.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
