Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

If you're looking for a head turner for the summer, this fully restored Mini Moke will certainly get you that attention.

First intended as a parachute-deployable amphibious military vehicle, the Mini Moke ended up being loved by the masses. Often found as a rental car on tropical islands, and also seen in the 1973 James Bond 'Live or Let Die' it's hard not to love this fun and easy-going car.

The Moke was directly based on the classic Mini, using the same engine, transmission and suspension. Using a steel platform chassis with steel box-section on each side to increase the rigidity.

This example is coming to market from 27 years of ownership, and has been fully rebuilt and used for touring since. The car was stripped down and resprayed, upgraded and uprated MG Metro 1293CC engine with some Cooper S upgrades to the drive train and chassis make this Moke have a lot more "poke" than your average example, and all the better for it.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Wayne the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As a true Mini enthusiast, I've completed the rebuild and added some modifications to make this all the more usable.

Wayne originally purchased the car in 1995, and is a seasoned Mini enthusiast having owned many variants of the model. Being a later car, the attraction was the galvanised body, and so it didn't suffer from the dreaded corrosion that earlier examples did.

In 2002 he decided to strip the Moke down to bare metal and had it fully repainted which turned into a 2-year project. Over that time Wayne has carried out the following modifications; installed a 1293cc engine (1275CC MG Metro block, rebored to 1293CC which produces ~86BHP), lightened and balanced crank, lightened flywheel with a heavy-duty clutch, Kent 266 fast road cam, high-pressure oil pump, Cooper S sized valves with hardened valve seats, ported head, all new gaskets, 1 3/4 his 44 SU carb on MG metro inlet manifold and maniflow exhaust manifold, Mini stainless steel rear box, new gearbox bearings, cross pin diff, central oil pick up pipe, 2.9 diff ratio and speedo gears to match, aluminium radiator, 6-blade metal cooling fan. Wayne also reports carrying out a fresh oil and filter change at every MOT. The car has just had a complete service featuring new spark plugs, a new battery, antifreeze, coolant temp sensor, oil & filter, new subframe mounts and suspension polly bushed with negative camber, front lower arms, adjustable tie rods, hi-low adjustable cones, spax shocks, Cooper S discs and rear drums with braided brake hoses.

He has also fitted earlier style lights, strait tube-style bumpers, H4 flat lenses headlamps, removable hood without side screens. The interior has been completely reupholstered to boot. Having completed a total renovation, Wayne has used the car for road trips in Europe, some memorable occasions being driving it to the 24 hours LeMans, and a ~1,000 round trip to the south of France without issue. After 27 years of ownership, Wayne has decided it's time for someone else to enjoy it, he'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Quirky looks, but instantly recognisable amongst enthusiasts, the Moke became the British equivalent of the beach buggy.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mini is fitted with 10x5 Revolutions with Targa body-coloured centres and wrapped in Yokohama A008's all dated 2002 in line with the age of the complete rebuild.

The wheels look in great condition on our visit with their chrome outers really shining in the sun. The tyres show a good amount of usable tread left, ready for summer. Take a look at the detailed photos and videos to see for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in excellent condition and has been given meticulous attention throughout the restoration back in 2002. The panel gaps and shut lines look good, especially for a Mini Moke like this. A new roll cage and bumpers were fitted as part of the restoration.

The galvanised body attracted Wayne to the purchase of the car. The underside of the car looks good, which can be seen in the mechanical photos. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

This Moke is finished in its original "Targa Red", which appears in great condition around the car, and really shows the amount of care that has gone into the restoration. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout.

We did notice the odd stone chip on the front of the car, nothing major to note. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degradation.

Wayne reports fitted earlier style rear lights and straight tube style bumpers, along with H4 flat lenses headlamps.

Interior

Completely retrimmed with red piping to match the exterior, the cabin spaces in these cars is really about experiencing what's around you outside!

Seats and Carpets

Wayne replaced the original white seats with re-trimmed grey leather with red piping and matching seat belts. The interior of the car looks just as you would expect from a restored example of a Mini Moke.

The seats, and headlining look excellent. Take a look at the photos for a closer look at the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears to be in great condition with its original large central dial. Wayne reports cutting new holes for additional gauges and a fitting a lockable glove box, useful when touring and parking the car up unattended.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car has been fitted with a sportier all-black leather steering wheel and an alloy gear knob that appears in great condition throughout. Take a look at the video review to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by a rebuilt and rebored MG Metro 1275CC engine, now 1293CC, this car can comfortably keep up with modern traffic.

Engine and Gearbox

Wayne has carried out the following work; installed a 1293cc engine (MG Metro block, rebored and producing 86bhp), lightened and balanced crank, lightened flywheel with a heavy-duty clutch, Kent 266 fast road cam, high-pressure oil pumper, Cooper S sized valves with hardened valve seats, ported head, all new gaskets, 1 3/4 his 44 SU carb on MG metro inlet manifold and maniflow exhaust manifold, Mini stainless steel rear box, new gearbox bearings, cross pin diff, central oil pick up pipe, 2.9 diff ratio and speedo gears to match, aluminium radiator, 6-blade metal cooling fan.

Wayne reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual gearbox powering the front wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

During the restoration, the Moke received Cooper S front disc brakes and drums at the rear. While attending the chassis Wayne has fitted polly bushed suspension with negative camber front lower arms, along with spax shocks.

Please view the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

If you're in the market for an extremely fun car for summer, this Moke has to be the first on your list. The restoration work Wayne completed gave him confidence to drive the car to the south of France and back, the Mini Moke performing without issue.

Electrics and Other

All of the electric items are said to be fully functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car. A modern stereo has been fitted to this car.

History and Paperwork

Rebuilt from the ground up and coming out of 27 years of ownership, this uprated Mini Moke has more to it than meets the eye.

A thorough restoration was actioned on this Mini Moke, and it has been tastefully upgraded too. Coming to auction with just 3 former keepers registered and the current owner having had it for 27 years. This Moke has really has been taken care of since being in Wayne's ownership. Take a look below to see all the previous work carried out and restoration photos.

Wayne will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Hello Wayne, in the running video, the sound made it hard to know, was the engine miss firing slightly or making strange noises when pulling?
