The motoring legend that needs no introduction - there's a lot to like about this restomod finished in a period colour and tastefully modified to look and feel like an authentic Austin Mini.

As everyone knows, the Mini is a car that was built for the public, a car that is extremely versatile and practical for day-to-day motoring while simultaneously being able to deliver a fun and engaging drive with its go-kart-like handling. From day one the Mini was a huge success, with 5.4 million Minis sold over its 41 years of production life, and it still remains the best-selling British car of all time.

This Rover Mini City was originally manufactured in 1992 making it a later Mark VI, with internal bonnet release and mechanical tweaks over its predecessor. However, this example has been restored in the fashion of its older sibling - making it a closer match to the first generation Austin Mini. The list of work is extensive, having had the bodywork fettled top to bottom along with full internal and external respray in what looks to be the period colour of "Clipper Blue", a genuine Austin tailgate with hinged number plate panel fitted, reconditioned gearbox and a better differential ratio for modern traffic, age appropriate seats, dashboard, and a reproduction speedometer that works via satellite, all coming together to transform this 1992 car into a real look back at the car that started it all - the Austin Mini. It comes to market from over ~20 year ownership, and the restoration of this car was completed some ~2 years ago, some more recent work completed in 2022 too.

I’ve owned this car for a big chunk of my life and it’s never failed to put a smile on my face - it’s even won me a trophy

Peter has thoroughly enjoyed his Mini ownership, originally inheriting the car form his mother he has owned the car for the last 20 years, carrying out much of the restoration work some 15 years ago. Since then he has turned plenty of heads in his one of a kind Mini, and just last year completed a refresh of the vehicle to really get it back into shape. He is often stopped when out and about and mentions what a great conversation starter such an iconic car is, along with having been awarded the club winner trophy at Walsall Arboretum classic Mini show in 2021.

Following on from the extensive restoration in the first five years of ownership, Peter continued to enjoy the car for the next decade and a half before just last November reconditioning the car and bringing it back up to scratch for its inevitable sale - due to health problems in the family. Exterior

Fettled to pay homage to the Mk1 Austin Mini, this example looks fantastic with its moustache grill, period colour and ivory painted steel wheels.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels fitted to the car are in excellent condition, with no sign of curbing or damage to the ivory paint, these suit the car perfectly giving it that period charm, and the chrome hubcaps are free from any pitting or damage too.

The tyres fitted are Yokohoma HF’s which are in excellent condition too, with very little tread wear as they were only fitted in 2019 as per the DOT mark.

Bodywork

The bodywork has been worked on extensively during Peters restoration, with the whole shell being stripped for a full internal/external respray which appears to have been carried out to a very high standard with very little texture in the paintwork and all body panels lining up almost perfectly - there are some very very minor misalignments on the doors and bonnet but nothing beyond adjustment.

Paint

The car was originally painted white, however Peter much preferred the "Clipper Blue" colour it now wears today so opted to have the whole car resprayed during his restoration. The paint has been kept in remarkable condition with no visible stone chips, scratches, scrapes, or other such defects that we could see.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass all round appears to be in matching condition with the rest of the car, having no visible chips, cracks, or scratches to be seen. Likewise the chrome trim is all in good condition too with no pitting or oxidation showing. The car features the early "Moustache" grill, a friend of Peters worked on the Mk1 bonnet to ensure it was a good fit and looked period correct.

Interior

Completely re-done in the fashion of the Austin Mini, the interior of this particular car is full of character and in truly wonderful condition.

Seats and Carpets

The seats and carpets were both replaced during Peter’s restoration, with the seats having come out of an older donor vehicle and the carpets supplied as a kit for this particular car. Both items are in fantastic condition, with no evident damage to any of the covers, nor any excessive wear to the carpets.

Dashboard

The dashboard has been replaced with the age appropriate item, and the speedometer has been fitted with a reproduction unit that uses satellite link to provide speed information.

Both of these are in-line with the rest of the interior as far as condition goes, with no evidence of damage to dash or speedometer.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a three-spoke leather example, kept in good condition and showing very minimal signs of wear. All stitching is in good condition with no missing threads. Likewise the gearstick is in good condition too, with no signs of damage to be seen.

Mechanics

With the original engine swapped out for a 1275cc, this example packs a little extra punch to keep up with modern traffic.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1275cc engine is a capable unit, producing ~78BHP - confirmed by dyno printout. During our ‘On The Road’ video the engine can be seen starting from cold with no issues whatsoever as well as driving out and about on the road, during which the car doesn’t miss a beat.

The gearbox was replaced with a reconditioned unit from Mini Sport which, when speaking to Peter, now works faultlessly. Peter has also fitted a different differential ratio to the vehicle to make the car drive better at modern cruising speeds, a smart upgrade we think. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

During restoration Peter fitted new suspension front and rear which provides a good level of ride comfort whilst retaining the Mini’s famous go-kart handling. The brakes also seem to be in good condition, with no untoward noises emanating from the brakes during our time with the vehicle and they managed to stop the car quickly and efficiently whilst out on the road.

The Drive

The perky nature of the Mini really set it apart from the crowd at the time of launch. This small car is extremely fun and offers a very enjoyable drive. Peter loves driving his Mini, not only due to the fun and enjoyable experience it provides, but thanks to the head turning good looks and the never ending admiration from passersby.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noticed no electrical faults. The car has been fitted with a modern radio unit in keeping with the aesthetic of the car, and the speedometer has been replaced with a reproduction unit that gauges speed via satellite link.

A fine example of a uniquely restored, well looked after, and pristinely presented Mini, this 1992 car has been backdated to the original and iconic Mk1 Austin Mini.

Peter truly has enjoyed his ownership of this Mini for the last 20 years - he's enjoyed it as a usable and practical classic as well as receiving great admiration from his peers in the world of classic Mini’s, as well as acclaim at shows up and down the country. The car comes with a whole host of invoices that show what went in to the restoration and backdate process. There is a notable mileage reduction when looking through the MOT history - this is simply due to the reproduction speedometer fitted which runs off of satellite. you are correct the work done onthe engine was done separate occasions ,also i used to at use the older reg plates at shows for an older effect and on the occasion at aldons i had left them on in error and I hadn’t realised that I had put the document s

Hi Peter,
I have been viewing your Mini in some detail, it looks beautiful. However, I noticed that the road test at Aldons shows the reg. no. on the print out to be LMR365F, obviously different to your vehicles reg. shown. Do you know the reason for this?
I also noticed that you have not shown any details of an engine rebuild, or any specification of any engine mods. The engine sounds excellent, but has it received any head or cam modifications?
Also is it fitted with an LCB manifold on the exhaust?
