Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Designed and developed from 1976-77 - the Quattro system finally made it to production in 1980, making its debut on the UR-Quattro.

At the International Geneva Motor Show in 1980, Audi released the Quattro, with its box arches and revolutionary state of the art four-wheel drive system. However, the Quattro design goes back to 1977, in the deep snow of Sweden, where a team of Audi engineers were testing their military all-terrain vehicles, which would outperform other more powerful models. This led the team to develop an Audi 80 with the drivetrain from the military all-terrain vehicles, and it was there that the Quattro idea was born to be used in road-going vehicles. This new design gave the Audi Quattro some of the best handling characteristics from the Audi factory. Coupled with a 2.2 litre turbocharged engine, it was a very exclusive package. Initially planned for low-volume production, the demand was more popular than anticipated once released. With massive success in the motorsport world, particularly in rallying, the Quattro has earned the right to become one of the most iconic cars to come out of the 1980s.

This particular car comes from ~7 year ownership with the vendor, a petrolhead with a collection of classic and performance cars boasting some Delta Integrales alongside this Quattro Coupe. Presented in "Alpine White" with original check cloth interior, the condition belies the mileage and it comes to market from a period of storage off-road, a fresh MOT actioned at the end of April in preparation for sale.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Nilesh the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Buying the Quattro was the perfect addition to completing my trio of box arch classics.

Nilesh purchased the 1984 Audi UR Quattro ~7 years ago. As a huge petrolhead and fan of cars from the 80s-90s era, the Quattro slotted in perfectly between some of the other classics in my collection, such as the BMW E30 M3 and Lancia Delta Integrale. In amongst those classics, and some more modern 911's etc, he hasn't really used the car much at all, just a little when initially acquired.

He has a busy family life chasing three children around. He has now decided it is time to reduce the numbers in his extensive car collection, simply because they are not being used, and he feels it’s a great shame to leave them sitting there. Please feel free to ask Nilesh any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The box arch Audi Quattro is probably one of the most recognisable designs to come out of the 1980s.

Wheels and Tyres

The original factory spec Ronal wheels are finished in white and are in decent condition with some age-related marks.

The tyres are Pirelli P5000 Drago fitted to each corner. Although a good amount of tread remains on each, the tyres have started to perish and crack as per the advisory on the MOT. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the Quattro, the body is in excellent condition; there are no dings or dents that we noticed, and the panel gaps are equal. In addition, we did not spot any blisters or areas of concern on the exterior or the underside, which also appears to be in very good condition. The car has an exterior refresh in 2016 under the previous ownership as detailed in the invoices.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The car is finished in "Alpine White". As mentioned the Quattro had a freshen-up in 2016 with a full respray and, since then, has covered very few miles, so it is still in remarkable condition. The paint looks even in colour across the car, and the finish and application looks great, a good job actioned in 2016 which shows today.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look in good condition with no apparent scratches to point out. As for the seals, these also look in good order with very little perishing.

This later model UR Quattro comes with tinted rear lights, and there is a small crack in the driver’s side rear which has been glued as pictured. The headlight lenses are in good condition, but there does look to be some tarnishing to the headlight reflectors, which are showing some age.

Interior

The Quattro comes with an LCD display, this is working as you'll see in a short clip at the start of the "On The Road" video, after having been recently repaired. On some of the videos you'll see it isn't working as they were takenbefore it was fixed.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Audi are finished in grey material with a check patterned centre. These are in excellent condition considering the age and mileage and don’t really have any signs of excessive wear in the front or rear. The door cards are very good with no major or noticeable damage.

The carpets in the cabin are also in very good condition, with minimal signs of age. The car has been fitted with aftermarket over mats/ones from a different car, that have been trimmed to size, these have helped to keep the original carpets clean and free from major wear. Inside the boot is clean and tidy, and the spare wheel is present. The headlining is also in excellent order, with no sagging or staining. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

Quite a common sight on vehicles of this age is a cracking dashboard, we are happy to say the Audi has escaped this, and the dash is in excellent condition.

The Quattro comes with an LCD display. Unfortunately when we visited the car the digital dashboard was not working after Nilesh jump-started the car a week before a new battery was fitted. It is thought to have blown the voltage regulator on the instruments. Nilesh has now had the instrument cluster repaired, we have added a short clip at the start of the On The Road to show the display working.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel has been replaced with a MOMO Millennium, which has a small amount of wear to the rim and the chrome inserts.

The gear knob is in good order with just a tiny amount of age-real wear. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The turbocharged 10v five-pot is music to your ears when the loud pedal is pressed, a unique symphony.

Engine and Gearbox

Seeing as the Audi has been stored off-road for some time, Nilesh has fitted a new battery, alternator, and a full service has been carried out, which included replacing a couple of perished hoses.

The car starts without hesitation and sounds excellent, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. A Scorpion back box exhaust has been fitted, which gives a nice tone without being too intrusive. The five-speed gearbox is in good order with a smooth change, and the car pulls really well through the range. Take a look at the "On the road" video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Bringing the car to a halt, the brakes have been given the once over, and a new caliper has been fitted to one side of the rear.

The suspension appears in good order, and no knocks or bangs were coming from either corner of the car whilst out on the test drive. Over the years, various bushes have been replaced, which can be seen in the paperwork section.

The Drive

There’s something pretty special about being out in one of the most classic Audis to come out of the 1980s; the five-pot engine is a joy to listen to and gets even better when you throw some 80s boost into the mix. It's definitely a car which doesn’t disappoint and one the new custodian with thoroughly enjoy.

Electrics and Other

As mentioned earlier, there was an issue with the LCD display during our visit, which has now been repaired, you can see this at the start of the On The Road Video. Everything else in the car appeared to work as intended as far as Nilesh is aware.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

A nice collection of invoices for the Quattro dating back to the early 90s, including restoration work in 2016, this car comes from ~7 years ownership as part of a classic 80s and 90s boxed arch specials.

The paperwork with this 1984 Quattro is in good form. Plenty of invoices for parts purchased would suggest the previous keepers were quite hands-on enthusiasts. This is a fantastic opportunity to own an iconic Audi, which is in a very usable condition without needing hours of work to be carried out mechanically or cosmetically. You can simply jump in and enjoy it and become the envy of every petrolhead.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
