Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The Renault Clio Williams 2: a masterclass in hot hatch evolution.

Few names carry the weight of the Renault Clio Williams when it comes to the success of hot hatches. Introduced in 1993, the Clio Williams 1 launched with a limited run of 390 cars in the UK market. Renault upped the ante with the Clio Williams 2 in 1994, aiming to meet the homologation numbers required for class A to N rallying eligibility.

Renault Sport's expertise shines in the Clio Williams 2's design. The car features a reinforced front subframe from the Clio Cup racer, along with uprated springs, dampers, rear torsion arms, and thicker anti-roll bars. The track is widened by 34mm, and the 7J Speedline alloy wheels are half an inch wider than the 16v’s, finished in unforgettable gold.

Under the bonnet, the Clio Williams 2 is powered by a 150bhp 2.0-litre F7R engine. The stronger gearbox with revised ratios ensures the engine's power is optimally utilised, delivering an exhilarating driving experience.

The Renault Clio Williams 2 remains a beloved icon in from the hot hatch era - it combines engineering prowess with a thrilling performance, securing its place in automotive history.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Karl the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Clio Williams was purchased 12 years ago by present owner and has been lovingly brought back to life.

Karl's son purchased the 1995 Renault 2.0L Clio Williams 2 12 years ago and parked it on his dad's driveway where it would be safe. Karl moved it into his garage where it was dry stored where it remained untouched for the next ten years.

Then 18 months ago, Karl decided there was no point in having the car sitting in the garage any longer, so he took it upon himself to carry out the restoration work to bring the desirable Williams 2 Clio back into a good usable condition and put it back onto the road.

Please feel free to ask Karl any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Wider box arches on the Williams Clio accommodate the wider track compared to the standard Renault Clio.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original Speedline alloy wheels, these have been repainted in the original gold colour and present extremely well. The tyres are a matching set of Goodyears, which are in like-new condition after recently being fitted.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Clio is very good, and the panel gaps are visually equal and matching. Since we took the photos a paintless dent removal specialist has been used to remove minor dents and dings from the door panels to retain the originality and appearance to an acceptable finish.

The Clio benefits from Karl replacing both sills due to some corrosion creeping in - a common problem on these cars.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in the original Renault Sports Blue, the paintwork is in good order and presents well with a deep shine.

Karl repainted the bumpers and lower section of the car when the sills were fitted - the colour match is good with just some higher levels of orange peal that may be improved by a machine polish.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the windows are in good order, with no noticeable scratches. There is some corrosion under the door rubber window trims, which again is quite common on a Clio of this age, but these aren’t difficult items to replace if you wish.

All of the lights are in good condition and have no damage.

The front indicators have been replaced, so do look a little brighter.

image

Interior

Grey velour trim with sports seats featuring an embroidered ‘W’ holds you tightly with great comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The sports seats are typical Renault and very comfortable, and the large bolsters keep you snug in the '90s hot hatch. The velour trim is in good condition. The driver's seat base bolster has a minor amount of wear but nothing excessive. The rear seat and door cards are also in good condition.

The cabin is fitted with blue carpets, which are excellent throughout.

There is a set of fitted Williams embroidered mats, which are also in superb condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

image

Dashboard

The grey dashboard is in good condition with no damage. The instruments, including the auxiliary gauges, work as they should, and the odometer reads ~70,580 miles at the time of our visit.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original three-spoke steering wheel is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear.

The gear knob is excellent, again with no excessive wear to the numbered blue section.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Based on Renault’s 1.8 16-valve engine, the Williams 2 came with an improved 2.0-litre version.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0-litre engine in the Clio benefits from larger valves, a faster camshaft, and an oil cooler as standard, all of which help produce the impressive 150bhp.

Karl has replaced many components within the engine bay, which have included the starter motor, alternator, radiator, thermostat, fuel pump, various seals, and many more. The engine fires up without hesitation and runs with no issues.

The five-speed gearbox has a smooth change, and a new complete clutch kit was fitted when the engine was removed.

A new custom-made stainless steel exhaust has been fitted and sounds fantastic, with just the very slightest deep tone.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The underside of the Clio presents very well. Karl has spent a lot of time addressing any areas of concern, including the removal and reconditioning of the front subframe, which is a common area for corrosion. This involved removing the engine, allowing him to fully clean and replace many items.

There are no knocks or bangs on the road, and the car handles as you would expect a '90s performance hot hatch to do so.

The brakes have been overhauled, and upgraded drilled and vented discs have been fitted. These bring the car to a stop in a straight line, and no issues have been reported.

image

The Drive

The Williams series has left a lasting legacy in the world of hot hatches. Its combination of striking looks, enhanced performance, and practical features made it a firm favourite among driving enthusiasts.

The Williams 2, in particular, represents a perfect blend of the raw, sporty character the Williams 1 had with some subtle improvements to enhance the driving experience.

image

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears to be in good condition and is said to be working correctly. The electric windows, heater, and Pioneer head unit are working correctly, and the wiper and indicator stalks have been replaced.

The original Cobra alarm has recently been removed, and a new Thatcham Cat 1 Hornet alarm system has been installed.

image

History and Paperwork

The 12-month restoration has returned this Clio Williams 2 back to a superb and usable condition.

All the original handbooks are present, including the service book, which shows that regular services were carried out until the car came off the road. The most recent service was done just as the car was finished in December 2023, and it also included a replacement timing belt.

There is a current MOT, which is valid until 14.01.2026, and this was passed with no advisories, giving the Clio a clean bill of health.

There are many invoices for parts purchased by Karl over the past 12 months to return this iconic Clio Williams 2 to its former glory and ready for the new lucky custodian to take ownership and enjoy it.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
