The Land Rover is synonymous with off-roaders - the benchmark in their class.

The humble Land Rover was introduced back in 1948 - Rover took inspiration from the Jeeps used in World War II and were built with aluminium due to post-war steel shortages.

The Series 2, like we have here, had a production run of around three years, from 1958 to 1961. It was available in both short and long wheelbase models.

This Series 2 is a SWB (short wheelbase) and comes to market after ~21 and a half years with our vendor, who has restored it over the years.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting George the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having bought the Series 2 as a project around 21 and a half years ago, George has refurbished it from the chassis up.

George spent around 26 years in the Territorial Army and always wanted his own Series 2. When he found this one for sale, he seized the opportunity - he has stripped it down to its chassis, replacing many parts such as springs, brakes, brake pipes, and more.

George has taken the Series 2 to local shows where it won rosettes and tells us, "It's such a fun car to drive".

Unfortunately, George has hurt his back and is no longer able to carry out the work it needs - he would like the car to go to someone who will enjoy working on it as much as he has.

Exterior

The green paint harks back to the army inspiration for the Land Rover.

Wheels and Tyres

The standard steel wheels fitted to the Land Rover were all painted white. They looked in okay condition, although some paint had flaked off and some corrosion was showing through.

A full set of Security knobbly off-road tyres was found on the car - they all looked in good condition, with plenty of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The bodywork looked in decent condition. The driver's door could do with a little adjustment as it takes some force to shut, but the passenger door and tailgate line up well. The bonnet also needs to be shuffled a little to open and close.

We did notice a couple of scuffs around the car, most noticeably on the front of the bonnet on the driver's side.

Paint

The green paint showed decent condition with an overall even coverage. We did notice a couple of darker patches around the car, particularly on the sills on both sides - some swirls in the paint and other light scratches were also observed.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and door glass all looked in great condition with no chips or cracks noticed. The rear plastic window also looked in great condition.

The badges around the Land Rover looked in good condition. Some of the other trim and hardware around the car were showing some signs of age, such as the chrome surrounds of the headlights, which showed some pitting and corrosion coming through. The stalks of the wing mirrors also showed some corrosion.

The canvas roof showed some marks on the top, but the sides did look in good condition.

A rugged, utilitarian cabin - just what you need in an off-roader.

Seats and Carpets

The vinyl seats looked a little tired, with some tears noticed in the seat back and the bottom of the passenger seat.

George has fitted some clips to keep the seat cushions in place.

Dashboard

The Series 2 has a basic but functional dashboard, with dials in the centre of the car.

All the dials appeared to be functioning correctly, and the odometer displayed ~4,003 miles at the time of our visit (104,003). The Series 2 features a low-range gearbox for use off-road, although we did not test this during our drive with George.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel showed some signs of age on the rim, spokes, and centre.

The gearstick also showed some wear, but the numbers on the knob were clear.

Mechanics

Fitted with a low-range gearbox, the Series 2 excels off-road.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.25L engine fired up first time. We did notice a little bit of smoke from the exhaust, which seemed to clear up; George mentioned it hadn't been started for a couple of weeks.

On the road with George, the engine felt great, of course it can be a bit loud in the cabin, but no unwanted noises were noticed.

The gearbox seemed to work smoothly, with gears engaging without hassle - we didn't notice any unusual noises from the gearbox either.

Suspension and Brakes

The leaf springs provided a quite firm ride - no unusual noises were heard from the suspension while driving.

The brakes brought the Land Rover to a stop without any pulling to the steering being noticed.

The Drive

During our short drive with George, the Series 2 felt very solid. The engine pulled well, feeling torquey, and the gearbox shifted easily with no crunching noticed.

The suspension felt quite firm on the road, and the brakes performed well, stopping the car without fuss.

Electrics and Other

There isn’t much in terms of electronics in the Series 2, but the dials and gauges all seemed to be working.

History and Paperwork

George has taken the Series 2 down to its frame to restore it.

In his ~21 and a half years of ownership, George has worked on the Series 2 himself and loved every minute of it. He told us about some of the work he has done, which included: new springs, brakes, brake pipes, under-seal, new wheel joints, prop shafts redone, new big end shells and pistons for the engine, the cylinder head converted for unleaded petrol, new windscreens, new window tops, and a new canvas top. It was also resprayed ~10 years ago, and fitted with 5 new tyres. There are many invoices for parts purchased over the years.

The Land Rover also comes with previous MOT certificates dating back to 2003, showing it has only covered ~5,000 miles since then. George has photos of the Land Rover when it had its original white metal roof, as well as some rosettes it won from shows he attended.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.
